I thought this was an old story, but here it is again today on CNN. Pierce Brosnan has been told to not report for duty for the upcoming "Casino Royale" 007 film. No replacement has been named as of yet.

I took it upon myself to interview the actors who have portrayed Bond in the past to see what they think of doing "Royale" again. You might recall that the original version was a spoof done by another production company that had the rights to that one Fleming novel (back then). And, before THAT, it was done on live television.

SEAN CONNERY: "You know, I promised myself that I would kill the next areshole who asked me about those fucking Bond pictures!"

ROGER MOORE: "How come nobody ever asks me about 'Spice World?' Oh, well, to answer your question, I don't think watching Bond play cards for two hours could be very exciting, would it? They'll probably stray from the novel and have the casino be a front for a maniacal billionaire bent on destroying the world. It worked in MY day."

TOMOTHY DALTON: "Personally, I don't think anyone could ever top the original TV version with Barry Nelson as 'Card Sense' Jimmy Bond. Why don't they remake that shitty 'View To A Kill,' instead?"

GEORGE LAZENBY: "Oh, I can't wait to see how they film the scene where Le Chiffre has Bond tied up naked to a chair with no bottom and bangs his balls with a carpet beater!"

PIERCE BROSNAN: "You know, I don't really care now what they do. Me? I'm moving on to a NEW series...of Thomas Crown pictures."

Brosnan will reportedly do a sequel to his remake of "The Thomas Crown Affair" which will also be a remake of "Topkapi," hence the title, "The Topkapi Affair."

Of course, the "interviews" are fake, but the item about "The Topkapi Affair" I read of in Boxoffice Magazine a while back.

Ummm yeah, but the thing is that months ago he was in contention.... then it was Clive Owen, Julian McMahon, or Roger Moore's son, then it was possibly Bronsnan again, then it was... ahh well who cares till they announce it!

Yeah, but what ARE you going to do when you can't think up ANY new stories?

They talk about all these "lost" films (due to nitrate deterioration or just plain lost)...why not remake those? Then they will seem like fresh new ideas [Wink]

Let me see if I've got this right: Someone comes to you and says, "We want you to be James Bond in movies. The spy, not the projector technician. We'll give you 8-15 million US$ for each picture. You only have to work for about 3 months, every 3-4 years or so. Except for that, you can go after all the 'high-brow' acting jobs you want." So what do you do? Work a few pictures, then say "I'm tired of this; It's ruining my career. Blah, blah."

Shit, give me the job if you don't want it. With a little help from digital effects, I'm sure I could be a handsome, thin, athletic English star.... Well, maybe a lot of help....! [Wink]

Out of steam? Not at the ticket window: The most recent Bond was the highest-grossing in the series so far.

Are you talking about Brosnan? In the new Entertainment Weekly he is interviewed about it, he certainly didn't say anything like that, in fact it sounded like he would've liked to have continued with the series.

An article or criticism I read while I was a Bond nut summed it up best, stating Connery was the most suave and authentic; Lazenby, too brief; Moore, too giddy; Dalton, too severe; and Brosnan, too slight. After the last two Bond films, I've questioned the value of going any further with the series. James Bond lacks definition, nowadays amongst our slough of action films, aside from a few recycled nuances and story archetypes. So much of Bond was centered on his chauvanistic charm in the 60's. The cold war helped preserve the series by allowing it the reality of crazy plots from villans half a world away (or in Switzwerland). James Bond really isn't equipped to fight Jihaad militants, shoe bombers and the like (I wonder if any soldiers think they're heading into "Octopussy" when they ship out?).

I think it was the literary background that originally set Bond apart from other secret agents and production spies of the day. Now that the public at large doesn't receive their action stories from books, the Bond franchise (content and character-wise) resembles a fish flapping about on scorching, dry land.

It's just not the old boy's place in the world of "Transporter 2."

Steve - that is very poetic. Did you come up with that yourself or did you copy it from somewhere?

I wonder if it isn't possible to throw the fish back in the water. The last movies became more and more blown up and lacked really original ideas, with completely nonsensical stuff like the invisible car - not that Bond equipment is generally very realistic, but that was really idiotic. At least I thought so.

But an interesting story with a few unforseen plot twists, some nice locations, unrealistically good looking female co-stars, that should be enough to breathe some life back into the fish, I mean, the series. It doen't necessarily always have to be about some guy destroying the whole world.
Or does it?

Word is that the new film will be a sort of "Bond Begins." Of course, we'll have to wait another year to see if he, or the film, is any good.

Bugger me man, I’m at the very moment playing “Casablanca” in THX sound, damn this film is a classic in many ways totally indispensable…if they remade I’ll burn down Hollywood that’s if those totally sad screen writers can’t think of any think original….

What does Casablanca have to do with the waste of a human life that is Pierce Brosnan? Sure, Casablanca was mixed with great THX sound, makes extensive use of the split surrounds and subwoofer and was recorded with only the best full frequency microphones capable of 0Hz-90,000Khz (yes). THX is a wonderful sound format. Anyway the movie must suck tremendous amounts of ass if you interrupted it to post on an internet message forum.

But you are losing the focus of this thread, and that is how Pierce Brosnan could contribute greatly to society by commiting suicide in a decidedly prompt manner.

"Pierce Brosnan" was the second best "Bond" in the franchise, and this new one looks like it maybe the kiss of death like the black-widow, I think "James Bond" has passed his sale date and they should just make the bold decision to kill him off….

Like "Paramount pictures" did with "Star Trek II the wrath of Kahn 1982, by killing “Mr Spock” off, but in the "Star Trek" universe anything is possible, but the “bond 007” world he meets his match and gets iced big time…the end sorry guys I just don’t see it happening with “Blondie Bond 007” http://im.rediff.com/movies/2005/apr/06daniel.jpg the guy looks spaced out in this picture and makes my what to throw-up… [puke]

I may be jumping the gun, but Daniel Craig to me seems a very poor choice indeed , he may be a superb actor ,and no offence to him personally but he just looks so far from the part we stacked up against those who have played the part in the past . I would have preferred to see Clive Owen in there.
