We've finally made it!

quote:
Giving a hoot: Folks have been showing up all week at the area's first Hooters outlet, across from Arden Fair mall.

Trouble is, the place doesn't open until Monday. The overeager visitors were lured by billboards that went up a week earlier proclaiming that Hooters is "now open near Cal Expo."

Hooters PR guy Rick Bubenik says he wanted to get the word out. Thus the billboards. But he didn't want to waste money putting up a "coming soon" message and then changing it a week later.

He's hoping most people will learn the actual opening date from TV and radio spots that started Wednesday - and a message that began running Thursday on Cal Expo's electronic billboard.

Actually, it's a bit of a surprise that Hooters is making its Sacramento debut on Challenge Way, at the former Monterey Bay Canners restaurant site. The area franchisee wanted to open the first local Hooters in Natomas. Neighbors there objected, saying a company best known for waitresses in tight T-shirts was inappropriate for a residential area. A different site, near Arco Area, was selected. That place is now set to open in mid-October.

Have there been any objections to the second Natomas or Cal Expo locations? None at all, Bukenik says. "Everybody's saying, 'We're glad you're coming to town.' "

God bless Hooters. It provides employment for all the trashy women who should be strippers, but just cant seem to pull the trigger.

Yeah. I went to my first Hooters in the early 90s expecting eye candy and not much else. To my pleasant surprise, the food was great, the service top notch, and the atmosphere pleasant.

The eye candy was great, also.

Sacramento is just now getting a Hooters location?

That's surprising. Oklahoma City has three locations. The Hooters company has been interested in building one here in Lawton (presumably to take advantage of the mostly male Fort Sill market). They will have some challenges though. The "pool of talent" for Hooters girls is spread a bit thin here, with the Dragon West, Night Trips and Sidewinders strip bars already competing for girls who want jobs where they wear next to nothing.

Here in Oklahoma, strippers have to cover their nipples with translucent or opaque latex thingies. What's that about?

Seems like many local governments choose to oppose (at least for show) the licensing and opening of a Hooters in their jurisdictions. When I lived in Long Beach, CA there was a huge tempest-in-a-teapot stink about letting Hooters open up downtown on Pine St. But it opened anyway and has been doing just fine these last several years. Haven't noticed the local community suffering any ill effects.

Even here in 'Vegas there was a bit of local opposition to Hooters when they opened their first location on West Sahara. Funny, there's been no opposition to Hooters taking over the San Remo Hotel & Casino, which will now be known simply as Hooters. I understand they'll make special rates available to Film-Techers for the next ShoWest. [Wink]

And of course they also operate an airline. Very nice FA uniforms. Now there's an airline I wouldn't mind flying for.

And now I have a respectable place to go watch football....considering we only have one professional sports team and it's not football.

A couple of years back, some restauranteur friends of mine wanted to open a Hooters here in Sacramento, but the license for Northern Cal was owned by a single family (out of Fresno, if I recall). The first Hooters in North Cal only opened two years ago near Fisherman's Wharf in SF. They wanted to put the Sacramento one in an affluent neighborhood near Arco Arena last year, but residents protested. Too close to schools, churches, children, yuppies, etc. This new location just came out of nowhere. I hadn't heard about it until I saw the billboard last week. And shame on you all for thinking Hooters hires strippers. Let's be pc and call them girls working their way through college.

Maybe try something like-

I'm with Mark, the one and only time I've been to a "Hooters" was a couple years ago in Barrie, ON and the food certainly ranked near the bottom of the list of good food around here.

That's actually still going? I thought it went the ways of Roots' & Sky Service's Beaver Air. OK, it wasn't really called Beaver Air, but I'm not sure if anybody at Sky Service knew what it was really named.

Phil is not joking! Hooter's Air

The damned thing flies out of Allentown, too! Don't get me wrong. I love women and their jugs more than just about anything in life, but somehow, airborne near-strippers has a tacky, Jethro Bodine flavor about it that doesn't exactly instill confidence in the air.

I went to a Hooters once, or so I thought. It was actually a "knockoff." The waitresses wore owl suits that weren't sexy in the least. They all had screechy voices, too.

We just got a HOOTERS here in Asheville. The religious zelots had a field-day with it until it actually opened.

I've only been to one Hooters. It was in Atlanta, and I met Bruce Hansen there. The big hot dog I ate was tasty. Lots of boobs and things to look at.

It's pretty funny that people would make a fuss over a Hooters opening because plenty of people take their young kids there. When you peek in the window, it looks like a family restaurant.

While the female servers wear hot pants and extremely tight outfits, their legs are actually completely covered in opaque stockings.

I go to Hooters once a year when I go to my accountant to have my taxes done. I always go late at night and it's the only thing open when I get out. But IMHO, the food really, really sucks. Plus, they only serve Pepsi brand soft drinks, which I hate. But I have to admit that the girls are really cute. But somehow they manage to find the oldest waitress in the place to serve me, which I guess is just as well because most of the servers are much younger than my daughter and I feel really funny just looking in their direction.

Hooters is more or less a sports bar/restraunt, with typical food for this type venue....but they are expensive. Their claim to fame is their Buffalo Wings....which you can order with a bottle of Dom Perignon for about $100.00.

All their waitresses are younger college girls who are stacked. But just how good looking the girls are can depend on the time of season...summer vacation, spring break...etc, etc.

Their waitresses wear short-shorts (no g-string or bikini) and tight t-shirts w/no bra that show off their assets.

I suppose you could go up to one of the blondes, aske her if she's a real blonde.....then ask her to prove it! [Razz] [beer] [Big Grin] [Wink] [Eek!] [thumbsup] [uhoh] [sex] or ya might ask 'em for some cream in your...ahem....coffee!

Cheers

I finally went there and I was very dissappointed.

1. They make you wait in a line outside until there is a seat available inside. No reservations, no pagers. Just standing, staring in, watching the people on the inside enjoy the Hooters girls for the next hour or so. Fun, fun, fun. This kind of thing might work in, say, Salt Lake City, but it's over 100 degrees here in Sacramento.

2. The food sucks. I was craving Fudruckers after this.

3. The girls didn't smile. Was it because this is a Hooters in Sacramento?

4. My theory about the Hooters girls working their way through college turned out to be true. My brother recognized two of them from his local community college. His friend recognized the same two from his local strip club. I miss the Hooters in Fort Lauderdale, where all the girls were aerobics instructors.

5. I think everything in the kitchen is premade. It's kind of like the MRE's being handed out to survivors in New Orleans (tasted the same too).

6. The beer did nothing to quench my parched throat after waiting an hour in the hot sun to get in.

7. The only way to truly follow up a crappy Sacramento Hooters experience is a fried twinkie at the state fair.

That's a pretty lame line.

We have a Hooters here in Manhattan. You see Hotter girls all over the place here in the city and in Central Park on a hot day.
At the Hooters in Santa Monica, California, there were better places to eat & drink with better looking girls in the area.

Hooters to open restaurants in New Zealand
07 September 2005

An American restaurant and bar chain, famous for its scantily clad women staff, is planning to expand into major New Zealand cities next year.

Hooters, whose "Hooters Girls" wear tight fitting shorts and tank tops, has operations in 16 countries.

Spokesman for Hooters in New Zealand Michael Flinn said the first spots to open would be in Auckland and Hooters was opening here because of the "economic growth, favourable business climate and long-term growth potential of New Zealand".

According to Hooters.com, "the chain acknowledges that many consider 'Hooters' a slang term for a portion of the female anatomy.

"Hooters does have an owl inside its logo and uses an owl theme sufficiently to allow debate to occur over the meaning's intent.

"The chain enjoys and benefits from this debate".

It goes on to say "claims that Hooters exploits attractive women are as ridiculous as saying the NFL (American National Football League) exploits men who are big and fast.

"Hooters Girls have the same right to use their natural female sex appeal to earn a living as do super models Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell".

Hooters operates under the slogan "delightfully tacky yet unrefined".

Kiwi women don't like Hooters

08 September 2005
By SUE ALLEN and NZPA

American restaurant Hooters, whose "Hooters Girls" wear tight shorts and tank tops, plans to open branches across all major New Zealand centres.

The first is expected to open in Auckland early next year.

Green Party women's affairs spokeswoman Sue Kedgley described Hooters opening in New Zealand as "retrograde".

"It just sounds like the blatant sexism of the 1960s that provoked the feminist movement. It's hard to believe this could be a serious move in the 21st century."

Rape Crisis spokeswoman Andrea Black said putting women in skimpy clothes and getting them to wait on tables perpetuated the myth that women were purely there for men's sexual pleasure.

"There's a risk in that for society as a whole and for women."

The Hooters' website acknowledges that many consider "Hooters" to be a slang term for a portion of the female anatomy, but the use of an owl in its logo and promotions was sufficient to allow debate over the intended meaning. The company dismissed claims it exploits women.

Though it describes itself as a "neighbourhood place", 68 per cent of customers are male, most aged between 25 and 54.

Hamish Kynaston, an employment law specialist with law firm Buddle Findlay, said though the law did not prohibit people being hired on the basis of their looks, companies doing so would have to be careful not to fall foul of the Human Rights Act.

That meant people could not be discriminated against on the basis of things like age, sex, race or disability.

I expect this one to run and run.

We now return you to Sacramento network programming.

From Hooters' website on the legal issues:

quote: Hooters.com
For a distinctly different reason, Hooters ran into problems with the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission (EEOC) in 1991. The agency brought forth a commissioner's charge against Hooters claiming its hiring practices discriminate against men. Following an intensive four-year investigation the EEOC determined what executives had told them all along, Hooters only hires women as Hooters Girls. On November 15, 1995, the chain took the EEOC's charge public with a 100 Hooters Girl march on Washington D.C. Hooters received support from the nation's media, calling the charge "another example of ridiculous government waste," and some 500,000 Hooters customers supported the chain by sending postcards to Congress.

Because of this action, 23 members of the 104th Congress, led by Rep. Charles Norwood (R- Ga.), wrote the EEOC requesting it drop this matter. On May 1, 1996, news reports announced that the federal agency would not pursue litigation. To date, Hooters has not received formal notification from the EEOC, however believes the matter is concluded.

But this was not the end of the legal issues surrounding the Hooters Girl. A group of men in Chicago and a group in Maryland brought forth class action lawsuits challenging the Hooters restaurant chain's right to hire only women in front-of-house positions. On November 25, 1997, federal magistrate Morton Denlow in Chicago approved a settlement of these class actions. Under the parties' agreement, Hooters will continue to be allowed to hire only women for the job of Hooters Girl.

Most importantly, the settlement agreement acknowledged that "being female is reasonably necessary" to the performance of the Hooters Girl's job duties, forever preserving the integrity of the Hooters Girl concept.

Sex appeal is legal and it sells. Newspapers, magazines, daytime talk shows, and local television affiliates consistently emphasize a variety of sexual topics to boost sales. Hooters marketing, emphasizing the Hooters Girl and her sex appeal, along with its commitment to quality operations continues to build and contributes to the chain's success. Hooters' business motto sums it up, "You can sell the sizzle, but you have to deliver the steak."

Rape Crisis spokeswoman Andrea Black said putting women in skimpy clothes and getting them to wait on tables perpetuated the myth that women were purely there for men's sexual pleasure.

Apparently Andrea has never seen a modern teenage girl, many of whom are dressed just as provocatively, if not moreso, than your typical Hooters waitress. (Or are the teenagers more modest in New Zealand?)

Really....it's not as if these women are forced to work at Hooters. Waitress jobs are fairly easy to get if you're good (and not all that hard if you aren't good, from some of the service I've had in restaurants.)
