For some reason I am getting noise coming out of my left speaker. The noise is a distorted noise of my hard drive processing and it is only coming out of the left speaker. My speakers are Creative. I checked all the connections, and everything is copacetic. Any ideas?

Are the speakers new, or have you had them a while?

What kind of creative speakers are they? Do they have a subwoofer?

has this always happened since you got the speakers, or did it just start?

I know you said you checked the connections, but is the plug all the way into the speaker jack on the back of the computer?

Are the speakers pluged into the sound card on the Mobo or on a seperate PCI sound card?

They are about 2 yrs old.

Creative 5300 w/sub.

It started about 2 months ago

Plug is all the way in on the creative audigy soundcard

If the speaker is setting next to the computer move it farther away and see if it stops.

Creative isn't what they used to be-they've really gone cheap as far as I'm concerned.

To really do a trace, borrow another speaker system from a friend, or simply plug in a set of headphones in the speaker jack, and this will check out the soundcard. If this swapout turns out clean with no noise, then it's your amplifer in the Subwoofer cabinet is going to pot.

Creative soundcards aren't too bad, but there are now better ones out there than Creative,but there are some baddies out there as well. I had one do the same (a Logitec speaker system) - bad buzz developed in one of the channels then "ka-pooie!" .. died. In the trash it went...

Computer add-on devices these days are just built to be a throwaway system, not for longetivity and endurance.

HDD noise coming through the audio system could also mean that the HDD maybe thinking of taking a serious, stinky dump in the near future as well...be prepared and burn off as much as you can while you have the chance, for files you can't replace while programs you can.

I certainly don't agree with that... Ya get what ya pay for and Creative has always had good value for the $$ spent.

I use the PCMCIA card Sound Blaster Audigy2 Notebook in my laptop and am totally impressed with it. DVD audio, dts/ES, Dolby/EX, THX, etc. 192kHZ/24-bit sampling, 104dB SNR, 7.1 decoding with analog and optical outputs.

Whether watching a DVD, playing music files, surfing the net/pornos, or listening to KVXL's Friday night netcast, I use it in the 5.1 analog mode for everything and it rules!

Richard: I agree with Monte... While the 5300 is a great 5.1 system, see if you can try a different amplified speaker system AND cables.

Try pluging your speakers into your protable CD player, and plug another set of speakers into the computer, to find out if the problem is in the speakers or the computer. A lot of noise problems are due to bad grounding. Check that all the connectors inside the computer are seated. Make sure that the screws mounting the HD and CD (DVD) drives are tight.

Now, this is an excellent card,especially being a PC card - which is like being an external device not bothering from the momboard.

Sorry Phil, shouldn't have been so hasty on Creative products. Just I've had some iffy luck with the lesser valued ones..

..do you also have a 21 inch TFT display, or a DLP projector attached to that laptop when needed?

I've always had great "luck" with Creative's products.

But THX is another story... what a bunch of marketing hype crap... both consumer AND professional products.

I don't think it's true that Creative owns THX or has any financial interest in the company .. other than licensing agreements. But I have no way to prove it one way or the other.

In 2002 it seems there was an article printed in an audio magazine saying rumors were circulating in the industry that Creative was 'invited to invest' in THX, but I've never been able to track down any factual info .. not that I spend a lot of time looking for it. [Big Grin]

I think the amount mentioned was 8-million USD. All it says on the THX site is that it's 'privately held'.

This from Creative's web site regarding their US acquisitions(extracted from their CORPORATE page):

"....Creative also made strategic investments in a number of US-based companies. Over the years, it has acquired US-based Ensoniq, E-MU® Systems, Cambridge Soundworks, Ectiva Inc. (formerly the NetMedia group from OPTi), ShareVision® Technology, Digicom Systems and Silicon Engineering Inc. It was posted here that Creative was supposedly purchasing 60% of THX. I can't seem to find confirmation though.

The founder of Creative Labs, Sim Wong Hoo, is on THX's Board of Directors, or at least he was in mid-2004 according to
Usa Today.

My computer speakers are THX certified. That means Lucas will take me out to dinner if he does a surprise inspection of my computer setup. Then he will offer one free BJ after dinner, but any more than that and I'll have to get my crotch THX certified.

...)What'd you come up with on your sound problem on the computer thingey? Soundcard issues, amplifier issues, or that frikken little 1/8th inch output plug on the Creative amplifier device having a slight open in the ground lead, which is picking up some ground noise, or the ground sleeve in the soundcard is breaking contact with the plug, resulting in some ground noise, causing the left channel to get a little crazy?

Just could never get over with soundcards having rinky-dink 1/8th output jacks, instead of good ol' RCA's. I know that the more pricer soundcards DO have RCA I/O jacks...

Shoot, if you play it right, one can use USB for, at least, input from an outside source....instead of that rinky-dinky 1/8inch imput jack...(LOL)

"Hard drive noises" are usually caused by a damaged device driver. Remove the driver and tell Windows to uninstall the card. Reboot and reinstall the drivers.

A Little update. I upgraded my speakers to Logitechs x-530 system. Problem solved. Now to save up for a non creative soundcard.

..good luck then. Yep, sounded like the power amp stage of your old setup was getting ready to take the big stinky dump then, if this Logitec system cleared things up...

..put your old speaker system up at the Fun-Lan flea market this weekend...
