I was having a look at google Earth, and I can see what looks like the remains of an old airport. The area is marked an 'Barren Island', though it now seems to be joined to the mainland (if you can use that term for any of NYC except maybe the Bronx). It's near the North West end of the Marine Parkway Bridge, South West of Jamaica Bay and JFK. Is, or was, this an airport? What was it used for; it looks to big for small private planes, military maybe?

It appears to be the Floyd Bennett Field built in 1929. Before that it was operated as the Barren Island Airport through the 20's. It was a military air field and has been used by the US Coast Guard as well as the NYPD Aviation Unit. It was deactivated in 1971 and is now under the control of the National Parks Service. Current uses are a training center for Emergency Services, NYPD Police Academy Driving School, Job Corp Training center, Armed Forces Reserve Office, and other stuff.

It's an old airport. I can see it in Flight Simulator but it is closed.
