Seriously, is there anyone still running 800x600 resolution out there? I would think the vast majority of people would be running 1024x768 by now, but would like to get feedback regarding potentially changing the size of images permitted on the forums here.

Please reply with what resolutions your various computers are running at. On Windows, simply right click the desktop and go to PROPERTIES, then click the SETTINGS tab.

I'm currently running 1152 x 864. That's a comfortable resolution for my eyes. Any smaller and I need to squint.

Remember that not everyone maximizes his web browser to fill the screen. I run anywhere from 1152x900 to 1600x1200 on various systems, but I rarely have a GUI browser window that is more than 900 pixels wide (I prefer tall, relatively narrow, browser windows). I doubt that I'm unusual in this regard. When using Lynx, I use a terminal that is 80 characters wide by whatever the height of the screen is.

By the end of the year I will probably have nothing less than 1024x768. At the moment I have:

1024x768 on a cheap Goodmans LCD panal on a Mac Mini. This is what I would usually use for viewing websites now.

800x600, or sometimes 640x480, on a Pentium II pc with an old 15 inch CRT. Runs Windows 2000, 98 and Linux.

1280x1024 on an Apple 17 inch Studio Display LCD,
1600x 1024 on a SGI 1600SW with Multilink adapter,
1280x1024 on an old Apple Multiple Scan 20 CRT monitor that I scrounged from work that is so heavy that I can hardly lift the thing. All of these are on an Apple dual G4 system.

Mac Mini and Goodmans monitor purchased new, everything else either secondhand, or donated to me. Pentium II has been patched up many times, and really is on it's last legs; will buy something to replace it when I've got the money. When that happens it will probably share the Goodmans monitor with the Mac Mini. The Mini was bought as a cheap general purpose relacenent for the Pentium, until I can afford a new pc, but I still have to use the old machine for certain things.

The G4 is mainly used for working on photographs and DVDs. It can also drive a PAL or NTSC television with composite or s-video, which can be useful to check how a DVD will look on a normal television, though I don't have a working one at the moment. The big Apple CRT is in store most of the time, and only brought out when I need it.

At work I have a Dell pc with a Dell LCD, running at 1024x768.

I use Internet Explorer on pc, and Firefox on Mac.

Well that's not my problem, and those people can easily remedy it by maximising their browser, so that's a non-issue as far as I'm concerned.

I set mine to 1280 x 800 or 1680 x 1050 depending on how small the text appears. Native is 1920 x 1200.

I use a 17" screen here at work. My home machine is a 19" screen, I think it's higher res than that.

Theatre has a 15" monitor that's 800x600 but I don't usually do any websurfing there because it's a dialup modem. (Even if I do, I have mastered the use of scroll bars.)

1800 X 1440 on my 21" Viewsonic P815 desktop monitor, hooked up to my old Dell 1GHz PC.

1600 X 1200 times 2, dual monitor setup at work (two 19" CRTs hooked up to a Pentium D 840 system)

The next monitor I'll buy will likely be a 23" or 24" TFT LCD screen with 1920 X 1200 native resolution.

When I buy a HDTV monitor, I will insist on both computer monitor connections and HDMI connections. Also, anything under 1920 X 1080 native resolution equals no friggin' sale.

When at home, it's 1280 x 1024 on an older 17" Apple Studio Display. Since I use Firefox with the Bookmarks Sidebar and tabs always open, the available space is closer to about 1000 x 900.

Alas, it does not compare with the monitor I have at work which triggers monitor lust in most people (in other words, an Apple Cinema HD 30-incher with its expansive 2560 x 1600 visual real estate [Cool]

, connected to a top-end PowerMac G5 connected to a Gigabit Ethernet line [Cool]

). Designing a site for that kind of configuration would be neat, but highly unrealistic.

It seems to me the point of asking in the first place is to get a feel for how the site is being viewed under usual conditions. We can just go ahead and increase our display resolution as a remedy, while we're at it, right? [Razz]

Now, I personally never maximize anything (since what's the point of desktop shortcuts if just getting to them is hardly a shortcut) and my browser windows themselves usually stay around 800x600, but even then, I think an increase in allowed picture sizes wouldn't bother me at all. So I'm for it! Side scrolling isn't too big of an evil.

But to answer the question, 1152x864 [Cool]

Firefox on everything and for everything except using work's Outlook web interface from home or elsewhere, which provides extra functionality with IE, and Windows Update. Those are the only things I use IE for, apart from the very occasional site which has scripts and things that won't work properly in Firefox.

The only person I know who still uses 800 x 600 is my mother, who has always had problems using a computer because of her very poor eyesight. When I upgraded my monitor to a TFT in the spring, I gave her the 19" Trinitron it replaced. She struggled a bit with 1024 x 768, but on 800 x 600 reports that it's the clearest text she's ever seen on a PC (as you'd expect). As she doesn't use much in the way of fancy multimedia stuff (word processing and email, mainly), I can't see her having any problems with sites that expect a higher resolution.

800 X 600 on both machines.
The older one running Win 98 with a 14" monitor and the slightly newer one running XP and a 16" monitor.
Have tinkered taking the resolution up to 1024 but it only makes the print so small its bloody hard to read.
But whatever, I can resize to suit and scroll up and down as needed.
Both machines are workhorses and see no real need to go to a bigger screen anywhere. After looking at some LCD bigger units that I thought might be easier to view will stick with the old CRT type thank you. The LCD looked very grainy/spotty to me... maybe my ageing eyes!!

1152 by 864 on a CRT. I am with you Lindsay, CRT is the only way to go! I have looked at different displays and still prefer the CRT, although I do like the Apple displays very much since they don't have a typical LCD look.

There is also free software that you can get that will capture and catalog this information into a database and then display it as HTML reports. It reads all your site visitor's browser settings, display settings, etc. We've used it on our web site to see exactly what you're looking for. I forget the name of it, but I can find that out if you're interested.

Minimize any open applications to the task bar. Right click on your desktop wallpaper. Click "Properties" and then select the "Settings" tab.

Since there was only one other person out there who noted using 800x600, I upped mine to 1024*768. The only differnce I can see if that the everything is smaller...

OH.. wait.. I can now see all the tabs buttos to the left where I used to only see down to the TIPS. I think it was..

I'll levae it like this for a while and check out some of the other sites..

Jason, everything on this site since it's introduction in 1999 was based upon an 800x600 screen resolution, even though a few were still using 640x480 (or whatever that lower resolution is). There were a few running 1024x768 at that time who complained there was too much wasted space on the screen and that pages didn't format well, so I've always tried to make the site such that it formatted ideally in the most common resolution people were using, but wouldn't look too weird when viewed with a higher resolution.

6 years later and I think there are few people still running 800x600, so I am considering upping the size of images and such so it will format more ideally in 1024x768, since I feel most people are running that resolution these days.

My browser window size is typically around 900x950. I rarely maximize my browser window, because doing so reduces your computer into a glorified terminal. Single-tasking is not for me...

I've been looking at new notebooks. I wanted to try and keep it around $1K and no more. I ended up buying a Dell Latitude D810 from the Dell Outlet (refurbished). Very nicely equipped, has incredible battery life, 1GB RAM, 60GB 7200RPM drive, 3 year warranty. Best part is there was no CRAP installed on it, just plain vanilla XP Home, no activation required. And Dell still gives you a real XP install CD, which almost nobody else does these days.

The one thing I've decided I really don't like though is the WXGA screen resolution. WXGA is 1280 x 800, found on many notebooks in the $800-$1500 retail price range. I thought I could live with it, but it's really bugging me. I'm accustomed to using 1280 x 1024. 1280 x 800 is like a 4:3 display that's been matted to 16:9 (really 16:10).

WXGA is like the bastard stepchild of screen resolutions. Bah.

I'm still deciding if I'm going to keep this notebook. I think I'd be happier with a 1280 x 1024 4:3 display. There's no way I'm gonna fork over another grand to get WUXGA+ or whatever the highest widescreen notebook rez is these days.
