Happy Thanksgiving! I am on the road, I had a burrito for lunch, will work until this evening, then spend the night in my hotel room, or the bar next door if they are open!!! Ahhh, gotta love it! I am thankful for the opportunity to work and be paid!!! [beer]

It depends on what the heck is in your Century and who the heck made the potatoes...

We shared a great Thanksgiving dinner with the new in-laws in Buffalo, as newliweds Katie and Jim came in from Boston. Fortunately, the heavy "lake effect" snow was south of us, and didn't affect the drive. (My sister's home in Angola had quite a bit of snow yesterday).

Is thanksgiving a big deal in the US? I don't even know why its celebrated to be honest. What you giving thanks for? We don't celebrate it here in Australia nor other US stuff like Halloween (that is something to do with pumpkins isn't it?)

Here in Australia the big family days are Easter and Christmas day. Boxing day is for the cricket. We also have a number of other public holidays eg Australia day, Queens Birthday, Labour Day etc but Easter and Christmas are the big ones.

I do like the idea of an excuse to eat turkey though. Maybe we should have a National Australia Turkey eating day?

Basic Thanksgiving story:

The Pilgrims (Brits wanting to worship in thier own way), came to the New World in search of religious freedom. They found that and a brutal winter. Half of them died. Eventually they got it together and celebrated with a feast with the Indians.

Thanksgiving is a big Holiday in the states. Everyone gets together with their family and eats too much and watches American style football. Its pretty much considered the beginning of "The Holiday season": Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years.

We don't have any public holidays between the August bank holiday (which is usually a week before Labor Day in the US) and Christmas. But there are a load of them in the Spring, including two in May. Personally I wish they'd get rid of one of the May bank holidays and move it to early November, as August to Christmas seems a long slog without any.

Yeeeaaahhh.... the 3 foot base at a few places around here is making it awful hard not to extend my lunch today.

Where do you ski locally? Any good Alpine skiing in Southern Ontario?

Nothing down in the Hamilton area. I'm in Midland today though. I usually ski in Collingwood (on Lake Huron), which is probably the best you'll find in Ontario. There are currently two resorts open in the Barrie area (as of Wed or Thurs).

Some years I could go without the holidays. Easter and Christmas are downplayed here so as not to offend anybody. Yesterday (Thanksgiving), all I wanted was a coffee from Duncan Donuts, and Nachos to snack on from the local grocery store. Both closed at noon. Blame it on Abe Lincoln! He's the one who is responsible for making it a national holiday!

Before then, it had been celebrated sporadically whenever a somebody called for "A day of thanksgiving" but it was never a yearly event until Lincoln called for it. After he was assassinated, the country kept the tradition in his honor.

I've always preferred night skiing. It's too bad the know-it-alls in the OPP pleasure boat always try to spoil the fun.
