Figured I'd use ShoWest 2006 as an excuse to say Michael will have to find a new place to stay this time around.
Yesterday, the Boardwalk closed down after 40 years of operation. The casino will be demolished and the tower imploded to make way for MGM/Mirage's new City Center project. The new development will stretch from the Monte Carlo all the way up to the Bellagio. An auction will be held next week for all of the casino, hotel, and restaurant fixtures, furniture, and equipment. The implosion will happen in a couple of months, maybe even during ShoWest.
Up the street, the Stardust announced that it too will close down next year--another old property comes to an end to make way for yet another highrise urban living project. It's neighbor the Westward Ho (locally known simply as "The Ho") has already shut down to make way for the same project.
Across the street from last year's F-T Drink site, the Bourbon Street casino has closed down. It, along with all of the apartments located behind it, will be leveled for some project Harrah's has planned. Harrah's also bought out the Imperial Palace. No official word yet, but many here think the old IP will be imploded too to make way for further expansion of Harrah's. Thus comes to an end the infamous almost-swastika-shaped building.
The old San Remo is now Hooters--I expect this is where most F-T'ers will be looking to stay.
The old Aladdin is in the midst of becoming the new Planet Hollywood. The conversion project should take about a year. Hopefully the new owners won't make the same stupid mistakes the previous owners did. That property has been cursed with bad luck going all the way back to its days as the Tally Ho.
Oh, and tomorrow morning at 7am local time, the Castaways (formerly the Showboat) tower will be imploded. Stations Casinos is planning another local's casino on the site. Another long-time landmark bites the dust.

Planet Hollywood is still around? Wow

Hey Prof, Daryl and I used to always stay at the NOTEL MOTEL... is it still around?
IF not, I guess I'll be at the Paris or the Bally for the big $$$.

I hope not. I don't want to be anywhere near a giant cloud of dust which probably will be full of asbestos.

Asbestos should all be completely removed before any such implosion is to take place at any implosion site.
Big time health issue and liability there if not, and I'm sure that lawsuits are to be kept at a minimum, let alone extinct with such events.

Paul, how abou taking the F-T group out to the Pioneer Saloon in Goodsprings for few beers during Showest. I am not sure if I can make it this year, but if I do I would be happy to take some F-T's out there. I go there every year during Showest and people have always had a blast. The only drawback is the 45 minute drive from downtown Vegas.
Cheers

One can only hope so. I'm tired of every other commercial break on TV featuring mesothilioma lawsuit pitches.

Andrew, would you believe I've been living here off and on since 1964 and I've never been to Goodsprings?
So we'll have to find a local more up on that place than me to lead such a F-T fact finding mission. That would be the perfect excuse for me to tag along and finally get out there.
The Castaways (that still sounds so wierd, it will always be known as the Showboat to us longtimers) came down without a hitch, the first steel building CDI has brought down here, and the first building implosion actually within the city limits (the Strip is in unincorporated Clark County). The air is very stable this morning and the dust cloud is still lingering like a fog over the area. CDI says they have two more to do in the next few months but didn't identify them; I know the Boardwalk is one, didn't know any others were so close.

Last year I stayed at the Flamingo Grand Vacations using a friends timeshare points. I loved every minute of it. No casino, no bells and whistles, 100% private. Very relaxing. I highly recommend it, although, unless you have a timeshare through Hilton, it'll cost you about $400/night.

So has a time and place been set for the infamous "film-tech Martini" as yet? Oh! Did I say Martini? I meant Drink.
Posted by Mark Gulbrandsen (Member # 72) on 01-13-2006, 09:05 PM:
Absolutely Bob... At the Hotel Continetal... where we can drink as many as we like and it won't matter a bit....
I have relatives in Vegas now so staying there is never a problem

The Continental?!?
Ewwwwww!
You do need to come up to speed Mark. That dump hasn't been called the Continental for quite a few years and has since been closed, disinfected, and sold. These days it's known as Terrible's.
Also just found out that the Tropicana is not accepting room reservations past April 13th. So there's my guess for the other implosion for this year. Lots of fond memories for me in that place--that's where I officially broke in as a followspot operator in 1974.

Paul, You are absolutely right about that, I wasn't thinking about THAT Continental...... actually a different one

I stayed at the Riviera on my last trip to Vegas (7 years ago?). If the Riviera is still standing now, that's the hotel that needs to be imploded. What a hell hole!

Ya talk like that, then ya wonder why you don't get more gigs at historic theatres?

I have booked a room at the Mardi Gras Hotel and Casino. The Price was right. $66.00 per night.
Only Phil can afford the Big Bucks.
Ok Phil! Stop yelling at me. You will receive them this coming Tuesday January 31st. No more of your complaining.....where are my Hamburgers?

Well Bob, I'm here to tell you like it is...You NEED to get off your cheap ass and send me some more of the Sable & Rosenfeld "Tipsy Onions" and those SPIKED olives for my Martini drunkard friends! YUM!
OBTW: I will NOT send you a dozen Kansas City Porterhouse steaks this time! I'm thinking more like 40% fat content cheap hamburger from Ralphs... (Only 29 cents a pound) ...Ummmm two 1/4 pound patties without ANY dry ice! HA!
(See ya in Las Vegas bub!)

Mr. Maar, I'm sorry I didn't see the above addition to your post since it was not an additional post in this thread to trigger as a "new" post.
That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by UPS today when they delivered a package from you containing a shitload of Sable & Rosenfeld products! I especially liked the "Sake 'Laced' Sushi Stuffed Olives" YUM!
As I promised in my above post, I will send you by USPS two 1/4 pound 40% fat ground beef patties. Ummm, no dry ice but will wrap in aluminum foil to preserve their freshness. Hopefully, they will not rot before you get them. Please enjoy in good health.
The other option is to meet up again at ShoWest and I'll spring for two 1/4 pounders at MacDonald's. Ronny gave me two free credits...so they're on me!
Posted by Daryl C. W. O'Shea (Member # 1303) on 01-31-2006, 06:33 PM:
Gee, you never bought me any quarter pounders last time we were at McDonald's!
At least send the guy some butter tarts.
Posted by Phil Hill (Member # 371) on 01-31-2006, 07:17 PM:
Hmmm... OK Daryl, I'll give you a quarter-pounder next time I see ya!
Going to ShoWest this year?
Posted by Daryl C. W. O'Shea (Member # 1303) on 01-31-2006, 07:32 PM:
Highly unlikely, I'm still waiting for my passport renewal.
Posted by Bob Maar (Member # 763) on 02-01-2006, 11:15 AM:
Phil, Your welcome, and I will take those burgers when we meet.Do they come with fries?
Dayrl, Fortunatly for me, two of my cousins one in Kingston and one in Aurora sent my wife the receipe's for real Canadian Butter Tarts.
She made two dozen of the absolute best butter tarts I have ever tasted. If you sold them at Canadian Consession Stands, you would instantly triple your gross and have a $5.00 per capita.
Posted by Daryl C. W. O'Shea (Member # 1303) on 02-01-2006, 05:59 PM:
I've actually sold butter tarts before. They went really well, but I don't think we made much money off them. I think the staff ate them all. Ok, maybe it was me that ate them all. Oops.
Posted by Paul Mayer (Member # 355) on 02-05-2006, 09:10 PM:
Hmmm, I've never tasted a Canadian butter tart. Wonder if that would work as a consession stand item? I imagine it would make people just as thirsty as popcorn does, thus supporting many gallons of soft drink revenue.
Hmmm, a butter tart booth at ShoWest... Hmmmm.

Turns out it's the Bourbon Street casino that will be the next implosion, scheduled for early Tuesday morning. They should have all the dust cleaned up by the time yous guys hit town.
[Edit] Oh, another five star dump is shutting down this weekend - the Lady Luck downtown just above Fremont Street. About the best thing that can be said for it is that its casino front used to be the downtown terminal for the city bus system. The owners claim it will be closed for a year for renovations - no implosion.

Bourbon Street was the first place I stayed in Las Vegas for ShoWest. It is also the place where the first two Film-Tech Drinks were held.
It will not be missed!
I wonder where I will stay this year?
Posted by Steve Guttag (Member # 268) on 02-11-2006, 07:25 AM:
I'll miss the Bourbon Street...it was the first flea-bag hotel I stayed in Vegas and have stayed there several times since...it is what it is (or was)...cheap and near the strip.

...two of my cousins...sent my wife the receipe's for real Canadian Butter Tarts. She made two dozen of the absolute best butter tarts I have ever tasted.
Well, isn't that sweet. Ms Martha from Acapulco sent me the recipe below... absolutely fabulous!
---------
Best Canadian Butter Tarts
Makes 24 medium tarts
Pastry for double crust 9-inch pie shell
1 cup (250 mL) Thompson dark raisins
1/2 cup (125 mL) butter
1 cup (250 mL) brown sugar, packed
1 cup (250 mL) corn syrup (grease cup before measuring)
1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla
Line tart tins with pastry. Preheat oven to 450 F. In a heavy saucepan, combine raisins, butter, sugar, syrup and salt. Set over low heat until butter is melted and mixture is warm, stirring to dissolve sugar. Don't let mixture get hot. Remove from heat and stir in eggs and vanilla. Spoon filling into pastry-lined tart shells, filling each 2/3 full. Bake in 450 F oven for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 F and bake five minutes more or until pastry is golden. Don't let filling bubble over pastry or you will have trouble getting the tarts out of the pans. Let cool before removing from pans.
Hint: If you don't want to make your own pastry, buy the 3-inch size frozen tart shells in the foil cups.
