It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Darren McGavin at approximately 7:10 A.M. Pacific time today, Saturday 25, 2006. Darren was just three months short of his 84th birthday. While we suspect none of us can imagine a world without the beloved, feisty little red-head, it is time to reflect, give thanks for his life and hold in reverence his memory. Darren is gone, but in many respects he will always be with us: as Carl Kolchak, fighting authority and battling monsters; the grumpy Old Man sending curses over Lake Michigan; as David Ross, the outsider, Grey Holden, captain of the Enterprise, the irascible detective Mike Hammer or any number of memorable guest star appearances, most notably as Joe Bascome on GUNSMOKE and as the washed-up old actor from "Distant Signals."
Please take a moment in your sadness to reflect upon all the ways Darren touched your lives, say a prayer and raise a glass to toast a career which spanned over fifty years and affected us all in ways too numerous to count.

I remember watching those episodes of the Night Stalker when I was in elementary school.

Some of those shows really scared me good, especially the one where Kolchak has to deal with a huge, hairy monster that makes its victims only see people they trust (like a cop, a friend, etc.). Kolchak quips, "I don't trust anybody." But then at the end he is confronted in a dark alley by the old lady who worked in the office. He shoots her with the spear gun and the big, hairy monster drops dead. One of the best episodes of that series, IMHO. I can still hear that brooding piano led theme song.

I'll always remember him as both Kolchak and the father character from the now classic holiday film, A Christmas Story.

Pretty terrible day for the entertainment industry with the loss of both Don Knotts and Darren McGavin. Their passing will give me another reason to watch the Oscars telecast. Certainly their images deserve to be placed in the "In Memoriam" segment.

Actually, that wont be until next year. They only list the passings in 2005.

Frank...I believe you are wrong on that one...the In memoriom segment includes recent departures. Stanley Kubrick died just before the Oscars (March 7th) and was included and had a special segment on top of that.

I thought everything was geared towards the 2005 year. Who knows...I usually find one or two people I didn't know had died when that segment comes on.

Oh, do I remember that Night Stalker episode that you just remembered! One of my favorite episodes...and it scared me, also!

I ran across a couple of Night Stalker episodes a few days ago on Universal HD. Back in their day I thought they were good. But watching them of late....man they were cheesy. [Big Grin]

You gotta admire someone who figured out how something worked, what was needed, & delivered. The man was more analytical & flexible than it would seem at first glance.

He nailed everything in "A Christmas Story".

Absolutely correct on "Christmas Story". It's hard to imagine anyone else in that role.
