Inspired by this story, which reports that an online theatre booking agent advertised its services with the slogan 'Like Gary Glitter in a sweet shop, you too can have your pick of kiddy treats in London's theatre world.'

The best (or worst, depending on your point of view) I'd come across before this one was told to me by a colleague at another archive. They hold footage of a Royal Navy warship exploding in the Mediterranean (sp?) in 1941 after being torpedoed by a U-boat. Around 1,200 people died in the incident, but this didn't stop an advertising agency for a supermarket chain wanting to use the footage in its commercial for a 'big bang' sale.

Slightly more obscure was one for an insurance company in 1994. The racing driver Ayrton Senna was killed in a grand prix crash, and the politician John Smith (Tony Blair's predecessor as leader of the Labour Party) died of a heart attack within 48 hours of each other. One firm of accountants specialising in inheritance tax issues briefly published a picture of Smith's widow with the caption 'Unlike Mrs. Senna, she got to keep the car.'

At either end of the Forth Road Bridge are bus stops with shelters, it's common for these little carbuncles to carry advertising posters.

A couple of weeks ago they were adorned with an advert for a PSP game, with the slogan 'A great place to tke a running jump' or similar. These were quickly removed as the bridge is a notoriou spot for suicides.

This wasn't an advertisement, but back in '92 I was in L.A. and I saw this doll of a little black girl.
The packaging described it as a "Dark Brown Doll"
I can't figure out if it would be considerec politically incorrect or if it was an attempt to be politically correct.
I bought it, but I'm not sure if I still have it.

I once (at a cinema that shall remain nameless) saw a trailer for 'Free Willy' after an ad for condoms, perhaps not politically incorrect but certainly ill considered and conflictory juxtaposition none the less [Big Grin]

Maybe not as politically incorrect as it is tasteless.
