For the last year and a half I have been working for American Express here in Salt Lake City, Utah. After hitting at least five different walls preventing any advancement, I decided it was time to look elsewhere, even though I have really enjoyed working for Amex, and support them in all my daily activities.

I was offered a position as a Financial Advisor with Ameriprise Financial, formely American Express Financial Advisors. The company broke free last August, in order to cut themselves free from certain regulatory requirements that had nothing to do with thier business. The stock has shot from 32 bucks at IPO to 47 dollars. Pretty good performance.

I am really excited about this new career path. With the way that my health had been going for so long, I had often wondered if I still had anything left in me at all. I am finally getting where I have always wanted to be, helping people achieve thier goals, and achieving my own as well.

Plus, after a few years of building my practice, I will be able to afford my dream of running a small twiner screen old time movie theater, a nite club, and whatever the hell else I want to do.

They interview nearly 1300 people a year for this position in Salt Lake City alone, only hiring about a dozen a year. The steps to get here were not easy, and I have to believe that my experiences of my life, most especially those of running businesses like the movie theater, helped a great deal in guiding me thus far.

You have all been a great family, and I hope to keep part of this great family for years to come. You can count on me being at showest next year, and get Ameriprise to pick up the tab!

Congrats and good luck, Dave! And yeah, be sure to check in here and pretend you never left the movie industry, because it will always be in your blood anyway.

(I was fooled by the title of the thread, I thought AmEx was changing its name to Ameriprise.)

Wow, those selection numbers sound like what airline pilots have to go through - about 1 in a 100 after meeting the basic requirements.

Good luck Dave.... What happened to the insurance gig? My brother in law has worked for Amex Financial for many yers... now he enjoys it... He didn't for many years... Takes a lot of years and hard work to build up YOUR customer base before you can make some decent pay.
