I need to be able to read any type of card that a student or member of staff may bring in, not to mention many other types of media.

Up to now the list of cards included:

Pcmcia type I
Pcmcia type II
Pcmcia type III
CompactFlash type I
CompactFlash type II
SmartMedia 5V
SmartMedia 3.3V
Memory Stick
Memory Stick Pro
Memory Stick Duo
Memory Stick Pro Duo
MMC
MMC Plus
RS-MMC
SD
Mini SD
Micro SD (Transflash)
XD Picture

Plus various compatible variations of those.

I now discover that to that list we now need to add:

Memory Stick Micro
MMC Micro

That's two more adapters I need to get.

Then there's MMC Mobile
RS DV MMC

but at least those will both read on a normal 3.3V MMC reader with RS adapter.

This is getting ridiculous.

And of course, the humble consumer can be guaranteed that any device he or she buys will require media of a different flash memory format from any other they already own.

I was lucky with my PDA: I managed to find one that would take CompactFlash, so I could swap cards with my existing digital camera and laptop. But then I bought a DAB radio with a record-to-MP3 facility. Needless to say, luck doesn't last, and this will only use SmartMedia.

Stephen - just use your krypton vision. Focus it on the chip and concentrate, then you should be able to read out and process any information stored on the medium, whatever type it is.

I used to know somebody who could read punched tape by eye - at quite a reasonable speed, several characters per second.
