My computer came with 2000 installed. I bought XP professional from Microjunk. It sucked it right off the disc. Now, on start-up, Im always asked which system to use. Have to pick one or the other, or it doesent continue.

XP is installed on my E drive. 2000 is on the C drive.

Ran a new Norton 2006 anti-virus this weekend. It found lots of problems on the 2000 parts of the system, and little on the XP areas. Its running OK this morning, I think.

Info:

Dell Optiplex GX-110 computer

Western Digital 80 gig drive (E)

Pentium III

Any suggestions for a guy that can barely type?

If the older version of windows is on the drive you want to install XP on just put the Xp cd into the computer and tell it to install. Xp will remove the old operating system in favor of itself. Once you have you have the new version of Xp booting from your C: drive you can format the other hard drive and dispose of the old XP installation.

Thanks for the fast reply. In other words, if I attempt to load my XP on the C drive, it will kill the 2000? Thats OK by me.

Or "upgrade" it, meaning overwriting it, but try to keep the installed programs and saved info. You usually have that option too. But best bet, if you have nothing you mind losing, just let it reformat C: and install fresh. The "upgrade" process is never perfect, and often you'll find you have stability issues and random problems much quicker down the road.

I agree with Charlie! A clean install of XP-Pro is hard to beat and will be very stable in the long run. Once you load XP on your HD then you can delete all the crap it contains that you won't need before loading anything else.

eah, my personal preference, is to backup anything I want to save to another drive or CD or such, then completely kill C:, and create a new/fresh partition during windows setup. This assures against a corrupt partition, which is rare, but I've had once before. Actually, in windows setup you can delete the partition right there, then tell it to create a new one. Whether you decide on FAT32, which is backwards compatible, or NTFS, which is more efficient, is up to you. Just my personal thoughts.
