Well... that title isn't really true. But I thought there should be a dumping ground for those kinds of comments.

I'll start. Personally, I wouldn't care if I never hear another word about Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, K-Fed, "Diddy," Colin Farrel, and anyone who was ever on Survivor, just to name a few.

Agreed - they manage to be both celebrities and boring at the same time, which is really the kiss of death (though, incidentally, when the inevitable happens to Britney Spears' marriage, her husband will presumably become K-FedEx, which should make for some interesting trademark litigation).

Celebrities who are also class A wack jobs I can cope with - Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise and President Ahmedinejad for example - because it's amusing to see the reaction when they start spouting their extremist or off-the-wall views. But this apparent cult of being famous for nothing in particular - certainly not for being unusually talented in any meaningful way - is seriously annoying.

Who the hell is Paris Hilton? Seriously, I've heard the name, but I haven't got the slightest idea who she is.

The one that gets me are the celebrities who publish their memoirs when they are in their 20s, or thereabouts. Wasn't it normal to do this later in life, when you had lived long enough to have actually done something interesting.

There are many fine, caring, down-to-earth celebrities out there, who live away from the Hollywood lifestyle, contribute to their communities and raise their families in relative peace. When it is time to work on or promote a film, they do it, but, otherwise, they fade into the background.

What I object to is these people famous for being famous. Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, the Olson twins, the Simpson sisters. There may be some talent spread among this group, but not all that much. They seem to spend their life partying, etc. Lindsay has been ripped by her producer and Bill Macy for wasting the time of the entire set by partying and being late.

But, as long as there are supermarket tabloids and gossip web sites, I'm afraid we'll just have to put up with them and ignore them as much as possible (and quietly laugh at most of what they do!)

What's wrong with that? That's actually a very smart thing to do if you can afford the upfront costs (which she can). Why give the record company all the profits when you can keep them yourself and give the company a distribution fee instead?

People (myself included) are quick to insult Paris Hilton, but she's very savvy in many ways.

Not that there is anything wrong with it. I was simply suggesting that A) she creates her own label which indicates that she does not need talent to get signed and B) that she has enough of her parents money to do so without having to work at it like other pop stars like Britney and Jessica Simpson have.

Actually I think by now she's got quite a good chunk of change of her own money from business ventures. Granted much of that is due to her parents money no doubt, but in any case it's not like she's solely sponging off them.

Agreed, I think I read somewhere that she makes roughly 2 million a year from TV stuff and modeling. I'm sure she is digging into daddy's pocket for a lot of the stuff she does, though.

But hey, some people are born fortunate like that. I would do the same if I would have been born under those circumstances.

My main point is that she can't really be lumped in with most other pop stars. You may not like their music, I dont like most of it myself, but they did have to have talent to gain their success. Obviously once they make it as a singer they will get parts in movies/tv because of their fame, but they still had to earn that fame.

Oh come on, man, everybody watched that video. You had to. I watched it a couple times and it certainly wasn't because of the quality. I was helplessly drawn to it. Here is an attractive girl worth way more money than most of us will ever see in our lives. She could buy her way in and out of anything, yet she's eager to perform the same sex acts that many men have to beg their ladies for. And that guy was a nobody. It is what I will always remember her for.

I have not heard the whole Paris Hilton CD but it's actually getting pretty good reviews from real music critics, and the tracks I have heard are not as bad as I figured they would be. She's definitely a producers' product, but she has a better voice than Britney Spears (which isn't saying much, I guess).

Ah yes, I remember now where I heard the name. A couple of years or so ago I suddenly got loads of e-mails saying 'Watch the Paris Hilton video', and a URL to go to. Since the e-mails were obviously junk I binned them, so I never saw the video, and never found out who Paris Hilton was. I can't say that I feel my life is incomplete because of this.

I doubt if you would have done, even if you'd succumbed to temptation and clicked. I suspect that you'd have been directed to a site which invited you to enter your credit card details in order to see the delightful Ms. Hilton, after which you'd have been greeted with a 404 error screen. That would have been followed, when your next card statement dropped through the letterbox, with news that several hundred quid had been debited from your account to that of a customer of the National Bank of Sodomistan, or some such place.

I haven't had a TV, at least not a working one, for something like 18 months now. I tend to work long hours, so by the time I get home I'm often too tired to watch it anyway. I may get a new one some day, but I might just get one of those USB tuners that plugs into a computer; cheaper, and saves space. I can play DVDs on the computer, and if there's something that I really want to watch I'll either get somebody to record it on DVD for me, or buy it on DVD, if it's available. I'm not normally tempted by free offers, but these did seem worth getting. I hardly read anything in the papers, it was all the usual Daily Mail scare stories telling me that I would probably be shot, stabbed, bombed, or in other ways harmed, probably by nasty foreigners; all about as likely as being struck by lightening, and not something I feel inclined to worry about. The papers that I doo read seldom mention her, and if they do my inclination is to turn to the next page.

I do read magazines, but they're technical ones on various subjects, and unlikely to feature Ms. Hilton, unless she actually does something interesting.

These days I get most of my news from the Internet, from many different sources. To be honest, I would be unlikely to follow links about some woman, or man, that I've never met, buying something, getting engaged/married/divorced/drunk/arrested, saying something outrageous, being involved in a fight <insert other subjects that the newspapers seem to be interested in> or whatever. I'm just not interested in it.

I would have bought the Daily Mail for the free DVDs, had I not just bought the Ealing box set containing four of them a fortnight or so before they did that promotion - grrr!
