It's actually a pretty cool and cheap way to communicate verbally (if one still does that) without paying crazy long distance bills (if one still does that).

Yeah, like my site for a while "68.51.162.64", don't bother trying it. Due to connection issues it's been moved. Now it's 71.something.something.something, I don't know the new IP, I have a few domains attached to it now.

Yeah, I keep to AOL/AIM, and sometimes Yahoo messenger. I used to do the IRC bit when I was...eh-hem...aquireing things, but I stopped that a long time ago. And when I played UO, ICQ was the best. I think I have MSN messenger, but I don't use it. But more than you wanted to know, glad to be of service.

I don't like the sound of Skype: as the software code has never been opened for scrutiny, there's at least a risk that some spyware is built into it, or that the application could be a trojan for other malware to get in. The application also loads at boot and stays in the background for as long as Windows is up. I suppose I might use it on an old laptop or PC which was used for that purpose only and had no personal data on its hard disc whatsoever, but I certainly wouldn't install it on my main PC.

I use it to talk to a friend in Japan.
It works quite well, very good sound and reasonably low lag comparable to normal phones on long distance, locally you do notice the lag. Until the end of the year you can call "real" phones in USA and Canada for free (they normally charge to do that).
I found that if you install it on a computer with direct high speed intenet, after a day or so with the computer left on it starts to hog resources and have a lot of open connections, basically becoming a hub. Behind a NAT router it doesn't seem to do that.
