I don't think he did anything wrong. If a righteous white man were causing a scene at the Apollo then there would have been the exact same reaction. Of course noone would even bat an eyelash at it.
Why should we go out of our way to spare the blacks' feelings? He didn't do anything that black comedians don't do every single time they get on stage. That is true racism, not saying that I am black and I hate you because you are white, or vise versa, but saying that I am black so I deserve to be treated better than you.
Everyone, white, black, mexican, gay, straight, whatever, should have the right to hate anyone that they choose.

The 2 black guys were on the Today show this morning giving their side of the story. They claim they were part of a group of about 15 (mixed race: white, black, asian) that entered the club kind of late and were probably making a little noise while ordering drinks. Richards was on stage at the time. They admitted yelling out "You're not funny, and you've been a failure at everything you've tried since Seinfeld" (claims that are true, but I digress). That's when Richards started. First thing he said was "Tomorrow when I wake up I'll still be rich and famous. You will still be a (n-word)".
There's more to the exchange than what is seen in the video.
In a bizarre twist, the black guys have apparently hired Gloria Allred to "represent" them (whatever that turns out to mean).
Anyway the only real harm done is to Michael Richards' career.

That is the funniest thing I have heard all day.
Again, did he do anything that blacks don't do everyday? No.
If someone is offended by something another person says, it is the problem of the person being offended; NOT the person being offensive.
As for his career, he is still getting checks from seinfeld and probably will do so for another twenty years.

I didn't even know he was still doing standup comedy until all this happened.
I'm surprised more people aren't chastising the "fun loving club patrons" for STARTING THE WHOLE THING by arriving to the show late, and then ruining his act by heckling him. They deserved to be shouted down!
Bottom line, he probably over-reacted, but if he hadn't used the N Word nothing would have happened. (Which is stupid in itself.)
Posted by Brian Michael Weidemann (Member # 2243) on 11-22-2006, 04:57 PM:
The first part of it (at least the first part caught on camera) seemed like he could have played it out as part of his act--well, not that it was staged, but as an improvised (albeit offensive) recovery from a heckler--then kept going with his original bits. I agree, he didn't seem to say anything totally outrageous. But he was obviously flustered, distracted, and got angry rather quickly; so I imagine it would be hard to recover and go on with the act.
I felt bad for all the poor people in the audience, with the situation getting tense and awkward, not knowing what the heck to do.

Why is everyone forgetting the racist remarks yelled back at him by the patrons of black persuasion? This video could have really benefited from Dolby Digital EX as they started to walk behind the camera to leave.
Brad always calls me a "cracker". Or is it "cracka"? And I'll probably never post it on YouTube.

In the televised interview, everyone used "n-word" in place of "nigger".
Quoting dictionary.com on the word "nigger":
Usage note: The term nigger is now probably the most offensive word in English. Its degree of offensiveness has increased markedly in recent years, although it has been used in a derogatory manner since at least the Revolutionary War. Definitions 1a, 1b, and 2 represent meanings that are deeply disparaging and are used when the speaker deliberately wishes to cause great offense. Definition 1a, however, is sometimes used among African-Americans in a neutral or familiar way. Definition 3 is not normally considered disparaging—as in “The Irish are the niggers of Europe” from Roddy Doyle's The Commitments—but the other uses are considered contemptuous and hostile.
–noun 1. Slang: Extremely Disparaging and Offensive. a. a black person.
b. a member of any dark-skinned people.
2. Slang: Extremely Disparaging and Offensive. a person of any race or origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant, etc.
3. a victim of prejudice similar to that suffered by blacks; a person who is economically, politically, or socially disenfranchised.
[Origin: 1640–50; < F nègre < Sp negro black]

I honestly believe that the only reason the word nigger is still around is because the blacks use it as a barrier between them and the rest of society (mainly whites, though.) If they didn't have it in any of its forms then they would have to conform to all other societal norms.
"Blacks can say it, whites can't. That's just the way it is." I heard that from a comedian on Def Comedy Jam, can't remember his name because he wasn't funny enough. I think that pretty much sums it up, blacks are going to treat themselves differently so the rest of society must do so also. As opposed to saying, "We are just as good as you and don't need to be treated different."
I have never met a single person that was not to some extent "racist." Ya know what, I think that is a perfectly healthy and natural thing. Peace, love and happiness is UN-natural. This does not mean that I advocate going out and doing harm to someone because they are a different race than you. I mean that it is natural for us to stick to our own kind and protect our own. There can be conditional peace between tribes, but it should not be forced the way that it is being force on us right now.

Point 2 - As a 25+-year professional entertainer (my film days are long gone), if you're not hanging out over the edge of a cliff in some fashion, you're just "phoning it in." Bob Hope is dead. Not everybody has to be Sam Kinison, but if you're not taking chances, why not just write a book, or a joke for READER'S DIGEST? And, taking chances, sometimes you soar, and sometimes you fall on your butt. Did those people come to the Comedy Store because they wanted something safe and pre-digested?

Posted by Chad Souder (Member # 343) on 11-22-2006, 08:36 PM:
Respectfully, I think the only person who can determine if a word or term is offensive or not is the person the word or comment is being directed at. I hardly think you can call a black person a nigger and then tell them they should not be offended, much less yelling that while your are visibly pissed off. Try calling a woman a cunt and then tell her she cannot be offended. Try calling a black woman a nigger cunt and if you live, let me know how long it takes you to heal. I agree that the selfish use of the word nigger by blacks is completely hypocritical. That, however, does not mean that a white person cannot still say it with ill intent. There is no equal word for whites. It is this ill intent that can make it offensive.

First, let me say that anyone has the right to believe and say what they want. Equally so, anyone has the right to be offended by it and speak out against it. If you believe the former, you can't deny the latter.
I think it is short-sighted to generalize about any group of people. I don't use the word, my friends don't use the word and it is not because I want to use it as a barrier. I was raised to believe that the only thing that can make you a nigger is your own actions. If you want to act ignorantly and buy into bigotry - that makes you a nigger.
That being said, I have never found Michael Richards to be entertaining, (ever seen UHF?), and this doesn't make me a bigger fan.
Posted by Chris Hipp (Member # 1788) on 11-22-2006, 09:26 PM:
Sounds like we are on the same page, Shane. I don't think that blacks are doing anything wrong when using racial slurs against whites and I don't think that whites are doing anything wrong when using racial slurs against blacks. I also don't think that someone on either side being outraged by it is wrong. The only way that it can be wrong is to physically act on it.
I don't use nigger in my regular vocabulary, I generally don't swear at all either. I do say cocksucker and cuntrag alot though. However, I will not try to spare someone's feelings by saying "the n word" when speaking about the term in an objective sense like we are now. I have no shame or guilt for my heritage and I certainly do not owe anyone the courtesy of choosing my words as to not offend them. If they allow themselves to be offended then so be it.
For the record, I really am not as racist as I know I appear. I even have a black cat. What I do hate though is hypocrisy and this idiotic concept of white guilt. The usage of the word nigger is at the core of that and that is why I feel so strongly about it. I really do believe in equality, just not the PC equality that we hear about all the time. My sense of equality is more of an 'every man for himself' attitude where noone gets any help.

Okay, here's my two cents on "nigger":
When the first white European explorers went to Africa they looked around and saw a lot of very dark-skinned "black" men. After their voyage(s) they got home and drew up maps to tell other people what they saw. They wrote "niger" (N-eye-jer), the Latin word for "black" to denote the place where they found the "black men."
Later on, when the slave raiders went to Africa they took along those maps. But, since a large portion of the average population of slave-raiding assholes were semi-literate, at best, they couldn't pronouce the word "niger" correctly and pronounced it "nigger" instead.
And, of course, it would be logical for your average semi-literate slave-raiding asshole to call the people they found "niggers", over time the name stuck.
These new black slaves, brought to the New World from primitive cultures (relatively speaking) would naturally seem like backward, uneducated, stupid savages to the European slave owners. It would be easy to opress a people like that, especially in a time when moral standards were so different.
The rest of the story is nothing more than a lesson in Southern American racist politics.
But, isn't it ironic that a word which we associate with semi-literate, uneducated, stupid assholes was, ITSELF, brought to use by stupid, semi-literate assholes?
And, with all that in mind, wouldn't it ALSO true that anybody who calls another person "nigger" isn't so much putting that person down as they are displaying THEIR OWN stupidity?!

Regarding the cultural double-standard: I've always been of the belief that either "the word" hurts or it doesn't... regardless of who uses it.

Jewish comedians also use a similar defense as well. I remember an episode of Family Guy that was not shown because supposedly it offended Jews because of the stereotypes involved in the episode. However Ive read that it was actually not shown because of some "offensive" material against Catholics. It's interesting that the good stereotypes of Jews were portrayed in the episode and not the bad ones, which is probably why the Rabbi approved it. Also, had Sacha Baron Cohen not been Jewish, I doubt Borat would have been well received in the Jewish community.

Apparently British soldiers in Iraq have nicknamed Saddam Hussein Wogzilla, as a result of whichi they frequently have to explain to their American counterparts what a wog is (allegedly an acronym for 'wily oriental gentleman', UK English derogatory slang for someone of middle-eastern or Arab provenance).

Richards apologizes, hires crisis expert
By SOLVEJ SCHOU, Associated Press Writer
Thu Nov 23, 2:39 AM ET
First he went on national television to apologize for his racial tirade against two black hecklers. Now Michael Richards is taking his contriteness to the next level: he's hired a public relations expert with deep contacts in the black community.
New York publicist Howard Rubenstein took on Richards as a client Wednesday after being contacted by the actor-comedian. He then arranged for Richards to call the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.
"I've known those gentlemen for many years," Rubenstein told The Associated Press.
"Michael apologized profusely. He wants to heal the tremendous wound that he's inflicted on the American public, and on the African-American community," he said.
Jackson, reached by phone, said Richards called "expressing his remorse and his confusion."
"He's embarrassed. He got caught on tape. That's a big part of his anxiety now," said Jackson.
"Clearly he needs some race sensibility training, and some psychiatric help. His anger is volatile and dangerous to himself and others," Jackson said. "I hope he gets the help he needs. But the culture that's producing this kind of animosity toward blacks must be addressed. ... We're increasingly facing cultural isolation in Hollywood, in the movies and in TV."
Jackson added, "We have to evaluate the use of the n-word and categorize it as hate speech, no matter who uses it."
Calls to Sharpton's home and to his National Action Network on Wednesday were not returned.
Richards, who played the kooky neighbor Kramer on the TV show "Seinfeld," lashed out at the hecklers last week during a performance at West Hollywood's Laugh Factory. A video of his rant then appeared on TMZ.com.
In a subsequent satellite appearance on David Letterman's "Late Show," Richards said his remarks were fueled by anger, not bigotry.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said in a statement Wednesday that the tirade and anti-Semitic comments by Mel Gibson earlier this year point to a pervasive trend in American culture, and that Richards' declaration "is indicative of the type of denial that too often accompanies racist rhetoric."
Rubenstein, whose media relations firm specializes in "crisis management" according to the firm's Web site, said he had never met or spoken to Richards before the actor called him.
Clients of Rubenstein's firm include Amazon.com, the New York Yankees, ABC Inc., Walt Disney Co., Time Inc., News Corp., Columbia University, the NAACP Image Awards and Bloomberg L.P., according to the Web site.
"I've been very involved in the African-American community for 25 to 30 years," Rubenstein said. "It would be a tragedy if this exacerbated our race relations. I hope I can help. ... It's always been an effort on my part to improve African-American and Jewish ethnic relations."
As for reports that Richards shouted out anti-Semitic remarks during another standup comedy routine in April, Rubenstein confirmed his client did, but that he was only role-playing.
"He's Jewish. He's not anti-Semitic at all. He was role-playing, he was playing a part. He did use inappropriate language, but he doesn't have any anti-Semitic feelings whatsoever," Rubenstein said.

Unfortunately, I think many members of the black community do look up to them. If they did not, Jessie Jackson would be in jail after embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Rainbow/PUSH coalition to pay for his illegitimate child, and Al Sharpton would be exposed for the racist charlatan that he is.
The fact that both of these bozos still get regular media time indicates that there is no outcry from the black community against them. When something like Richard's rant happens, these two are among the first to start shouting (because hey, controversy makes for great news!), so black people are reaffirmed that Jackson and Sharpton are looking out for their interests. Being white, I cannot pretend to know who would be a better choice for "black leadership", but I do know that any time either or both of these two get involved with a cause, it makes it seem like a circus act to the casual observer and does not add merit.

Model for character talks about 'Kramer'
By LARRY McSHANE, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 46 minutes ago
The first call came from the Midwest. Before long, the phone was ringing, and ringing, and ringing again: Satellite radio. Fox News. Extra. Yada, yada, yada.
For Kenny Kramer, role model for the "Seinfeld" character who shared his surname, each call was a reminder of the intersection between his real life and his sitcom doppelganger. Actor Michael Richards — the on-air Cosmo Kramer — made headlines this week with a racist rant in a Los Angeles comedy club.
Suddenly, everybody wanted to know what Kramer — despite the degrees of separation — thought about the man who played the character based on his life.
Confused? So was Kramer.
"I did at least 15 to 20 interviews," said Kramer, talking to interviewee No. 16 or 21. "All hell broke loose. There were lots of e-mails. They were about 9-1 positive. A guy who wrote a story in the Daily News said, `I hope this doesn't hurt your business.'"
Ah, the business — where Kramer has enjoyed the merger of man and myth for nearly 11 years. Kramer, now 62, launched the "Kramer Reality Tour" in January 1996, taking Sein-fans on a tour of Manhattan locales featured in the Emmy-winning comedy series.
It remains a brilliant concept, bringing together New York real estate and Hollywood surreality. There was the real New York Health and Racquet Club, where the fake Kramer met a bogus Salman Rushdie. Or the midtown office building where the fake Kramer discovered a publisher for his coffee table book ... about coffee tables.
The real Kramer, who initially lobbied to play himself on the program, subsequently met with Richards on several occasions. His insight after the actor's meltdown during a stand-up comedy appearance: Richards had little in common with his off-kilter "Seinfeld" persona.
"I know the guy," the real Kramer said of the faux Kramer. "He's not this outgoing ball of fun that people would expect Kramer to be. They think he's be exciting, lovable, laughable. But he's quiet, introspective, even paranoid. He's a very wound-up guy. But I don't think he's a racist."
While Richards spent nine seasons playing the K-Man, Kramer spent 10 years in a Hell's Kitchen apartment across the hall from "Seinfeld" co-creator Larry David. His life became the framework for Richards' quirky, bumbling Seinfeld sidekick, right down to the location of Kramer's apartment.
There was even a slight physical resemblance.
But Richards' repeated use of a racial epithet in shouting down two hecklers had the genuine Kramer gently reminding folks of the difference between inspiration and imitation — even after the phony Kramer apologized during a television appearance with the real Jerry Seinfeld.
"The things that really annoys me is that The Drudge Report, Michael Savage, are saying Kramer's a racist,'" the real Kramer said on a real phone from a real location in Manhattan. "Kramer is a fictitious character. Michael Richards is an actor who played that character."
Kramer said he wasn't too worried that people would confuse Kramer, the character, with Kramer, the person.
Just in case, however, he issued a two-sentence statement drawing the distinction: "I know the public is smart enough to realize that Michael Richards' personal actions in no way reflect on the character he portrayed on television or me, Kenny Kramer, the real person that the character was based on."
Kramer, who starts his 11th year of the reality tour in January, managed to find a silver lining in the confusion.
"You know what the good news is?" he asked. "Judith Regan is now on a plane to California, trying to sign Michael Richards to a book deal: `If I Were a Racist, Here's What I Would Have Said.'"

This whole situation, especially with how the news media is blowing it up like crazy, is inexcusably stupid.
First, Michael Richards was wrong for running up and down the stage screaming racial slurs. Any white person has to be Lois Lane Stupid to freely use the word "nigger" especially in something like a public performance. White people have been losing their jobs over similar instances. Look at what happened to Howard Cosell and Jimmy The Greek. People that aren't even famous or public figures of any capacity have been fired from jobs for being overheard using the n-word.
I will agree 100% the current situation is absolutely unfair.
White people aren't nearly as easily offended by terms like "honkey," "cracker," "peckerwood," "white-bread" and lots of other slurs. There's a number of non-white comedians and entertainers who base a great deal of their material on insulting whites. Our popular culture sends out lots of anti-white messages, painting the whole race as plain, weak and impotent. But no one is losing their jobs or sparking any protests over that.
I just wish there was some fair consistency across the board in all of this. If using a bigoted slur is going to be a career ending offense for one group of people then it should be a career ending offense for ALL people. No one should get a free pass.
Or maybe all those stupid race cards should be thrown away and everyone should pull thick stick out of their asses and get over themselves.
While so many people are wringing their hands in disgust over Michael Richards' words, on the other side of the world people are dying in the tens or hundreds at a time from suicide car bombings all based on religious inspired hatred. Our problems of race relations in America are very small potatoes compared to other places in the world.

No, it's true. There were absolutely no more problems and prejudices between "black" and "white" people anymore before Michael Kramer, I mean, Cosmo Richards, uh... anyway, before he went on stage and destroyed it all! He single-handedly turned the clock back to almost before the Civil War. If he had been on stage 5 minutes longer, then "black" people would have become slaves again.
You have to be really careful what you say. For instance, in future, sports commentators can not use the words "offense" and "defense" anymore because "Mexican" people will be offended by the word "fence". That means there will be no more "fencing" on TV either. It will from now on be called "messing around with a long pointy metal rod".

We should say words like "Wop", "Kike", "Pollack" and of course, "Nigger" all the time. We should say them so often that people get so used to hearing them that they are no longer swear words.
Then, in ten years, we'll all be saying "Nigger" on TV and nobody will even bat an eyelash except for some old bastard in Miami.

Don't call us Poms, say Poms
By Heath Aston
November 30, 2006 01:00am
Article from: The Daily Telegraph
It is the Don Bradman of whinges.
A group of thin-skinned English expats wants the word Pom banned, claiming it is a racial slur on a par with the most appalling insults.
British People Against Racial Discrimination has gone to the Advertising Standards Board in an attempt to derail the latest Tooheys campaign which mocks the warm-beer-drinking Brits.
The ads claim Tooheys' supercold brand is "cold enough to scare a Pom".
The Aussie brewer will fight the complaint, saying BPARDs gripe is as wide of the mark as Steve Harmison's first ball in the Ashes series.
"The Oxford Dictionary classes Pom as being derogatory just like wog, wop, dink, dago, coon and abo, it's every bit as bad as the term nigger," BPARD spokesman David Thomason said yesterday.
BPARD, which has a committee of 14 and branches in Perth and Melbourne, does not want Pom banned from general usage but Mr Thomason believes there is an agenda in the media to take the insult to new heights.
BPARD has some well-heeled backing from the mother country in the form of the notoriously stuffy English and Wales Cricket Board.
ECB chief executive David Collier said in a letter dated October 10: "The ECB continues with our position that we would prefer the terminology not be used".
The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission disagrees however, saying it is only the descriptive language used in tandem with Pom that carries offence.
"The prospect of the use of the word 'Pom' itself inciting hatred against a group appears more remote than the use of words used to describe other racial groups," commission spokesman Paul Oliver said.
The stink is unlikely to deter Australian cricket fans from roasting their English rivals when the second Test begins in Adelaide tomorrow.
But even that battle is skewed against the Poms, according to Mr Thomason.
"These songs that the Aussie supporters sing talk about we can't get near you because of your smell, your body odour, your bad breath, your buck teeth, your whingeing, have you got some soap," he said.
"The worst you hear from the Barmy Army is that Aussies are sheep shaggers and you all live in a penal colony."
The world needs to get a life.

I'm sick of indians claiming they are the only Native Americans here. Anyone else tired of paying for what "our" forefathers did to "their" forefathers? I haven't read every post, but my personal belief is that words are used in context and part of that context is who is making the comment and what the intent is. And frequently, it even matters whether it's funny or not, even though what's funny is subjective.
While I despise the fact that blacks brought back the word nigger (because it was pretty much dead before they did that), there is a difference when a black uses the word and when a white uses the word, just like there's a difference between someone telling a very disparaging joke about their own ethnic group and telling a similar joke about another. I can't believe that the majority here don't seem to think that context matters.
You can't seriously believe that there isn't a difference if I say to a black coworker, "hey nigger, come here" and if another black coworker said the same thing to him.
It didn't sound to me like Richards meant his comments to be funny. It sounds like he meant his comments to be hurtful in order to get the people to shut up. That doesn't necessarily make him a racist, but it might. In his defense, he apparently did something similar before, but to Jews, even though he's Jewish himself. That would make him obnoxious and unfunny, but not racist.
All comedians have had to deal with hecklers. The good ones learn how to do it with skill and grace. They do it in part, by winning the rest of the audience to their side. Richards apparently hasn't learned that and because he hasn't learned that, he's now going to pay a big price.

If an ethnic swear word is going to be forbidden, it must be forbidden in all cases. If not, then other ethnic swear words must be allowed under the same contextual standards.

I agree 100% there is a difference. The problem is white people are practically the only ones being held to that standard.
It's perfectly okay for any non-white person to make racial insults against white people and even do it on national TV. A lot of the jokes black comedians tell about white people would be deemed hatefully racist if a white comedian told the same kind of joke with the colors reversed.

What is interesting is that in my experiences Blacks are usually the instigators and then run for cover when they are retaliated against.
When I was in the USAF, I lived in the military barracks at what was Norton AFB, CA (now closed). People of both sexes and of multiple ethnic, religious and political backgrounds all lived in the dorms. The general atmosphere was "live and let live", and there were really no problems.
The exception was the Black community who generally LOVED to instigate trouble with EVERYONE, and when they were eventually retialliated against they would generally run for cover and go crying to the Social Actions office. Here is one example.
We had rules in the dorm about how to conduct yourself...these were basic rules that one would find in any appartment complex. But the Blacks always considered themselves immune to these rules. And if anyone complained or held the Blacks responsible then they would immediately cry "racial discrimination".
It finally came to a climax upon our return from Desert Storm when the Blacks pushed the Southern Good Ole Boys to the limit, and those Good Ole Boys finally let loose on the Blacks by tagging their rooms and property with KKK and Neo Nazi
grafitti.
Now, I served as the Jewish Lay Leader at Norton AFB and helped to calm the situation by arranging a base-wide tour, etc of the Museum of Tolerance in LA.
Ironically, the only anti-Semitism that I experienced while in the USAF was from Blacks. This included one of my First Sergeants, and I finally had the base Chapplin intervene and got this First Shirt straightened out.
One other sickening experience occured when I lived in Israel. While at Yad Vashem, there was a touring group of American kids, mostly Black from what appeared to be inner city America. Talk about disrespectful in the Hall of Rememberance!!! One of them took a skullcap, startted jabbering about what this crap was for, threw it on the ground and started to use it for "break-dancing"!! Yes, THIS REALLY HAPPENED!! There were a few people who confronted this kid, and he attempted to show what a bad-ass gangsta he was!
Bottom line, I am really sick and tired of these double standards that Blacks think they are entitled to. And it is really shameful about how the Black community in general disses on someone like Bill Cosby who has spoken out about what the Black community must do redeem itself.

quote: Jim Ziegler
Since when did English people get their own race?
Good point. There has been ongoing, large scale immigration to and emigration from England throughout its history, pretty much since the Romans turned up in 0043. If you're defining race on genetic/biological grounds, then 'English' simply isn't one. In terms of national identity, though, this is becoming more of an issue, and it's been caused largely by Scottish devolution. In 1997 the Blair government held a referendum in Scotland, which resulted in the formation of a Scottish Parliament. This has jurisdiction over everything except taxation and foreign policy, which is still determined at UK (i.e. the Westminster parliament) level. A similar referendum was also held in Wales, but they voted against full-scale devolution and now have a Welsh Assembly, which has far more limited powers.
The referendum in Scotland was a response to a growing feeling that Scots had previously got a raw deal from Westminster, and also to a resurgence of nationalism north of the border. But, IMHO, it was badly thought through, because the devolution process didn't take into account the overall balance of power between Scotland and England. The result was that Scots members of the UK Parliament can vote in Westminster on policy issues which affect only England, but English MPs can't do likewise in relation to Scotland, because those laws are now passed in the Scottish Parliament, in which they don't sit. It's been increasingly pointed out that this has led to a fundamentally undemocratic sitation on a number of points. For example, the ruling Labour party has an overall majority in the UK Parliament, but not in English constituencies. So, when they want to pass laws which only apply in England, they rely on the votes of Scottish MPs to get them through. Increased tuition fees in universities and unpopular changes to our state-run healthcare system have both been passed because of this imbalance - without the Scottish votes, they would have been thrown out. Also, the proportion of government spending per head of population is around 40% higher in Scotland than it is in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. The popluation of Scotland is around 5 million, compared with 52 million in England. An increasing number of English people are now wondering whether the UK is still viable in its current form, added to which the Scottish Nationalist Party, which advocates complete independence (i.e. the break-up of the UK into separate sovereign states - in that scenario Scotland would be a separate country from England, and you'd need to show your passport when crossing the border), is gaining support among Scots.
A recent opinion poll showed that a clear majority in both Scotland and England support constitutional change: and if the SNP win next spring's Scottish Parliament elections my gut feeling is that this could be seriously on the cards. It would be a huge change for all of us - but there again, the UK has only existed in its current form for 299 years, which in terms of our history isn't all that long.

TEMPE, Ariz. - City leaders have apologized after a program on Tempe's cable channel showed a white police officer telling two black men they could get out of a littering ticket by performing a rap.
Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman and Police Chief Tom Ryff apologized for the show Thursday and suspended its future production after black community leaders voiced outrage and disappointment.
"I accept responsibility for the actions of my staff and apologize to any members of our community who have been offended," Ryff said during a news conference Friday.
The segment appeared on "Tempe StreetBeat," a program produced by police in the Phoenix suburb that followed several officers on patrol. It shows Sgt. Chuck Schoville pulling over two men in August in a mall parking lot.
He first asks for a name and ID from the driver and then asks the two men if they know how much the fine is for littering.
The officer then tells the men that they can avoid getting a littering ticket "if the two of you just do a little rap about — what do you want to do a rap about? Littering? About the dangers of littering."
The two men agree, and each performs a short rap, laughing afterward. One says, "The dangers of littering, you will get a ticket. If you ain't wit' it, you better be experienced."
The second man raps, "Yo, I just got pulled over 'cause I threw my trash out the window when they rolled over. They got behind me and pulled me over."
Later, Schoville talks football with the men, one of whom agrees with his prediction that the Oakland Raiders will make it to the Super Bowl this year.
Schoville then says, "You know why you say I'm right? Because I got a gun and badge. I'm always right. That's the way it works, right?" The three laugh and the two men get in their car.
Leaders of chapters of the
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the National Action Network expressed outrage and demanded that the city act.
The Rev. Jarrett Maupin of the National Action Network, who was at Friday's news conference, said he had accepted Hallman's and Ryff's apologies and intends to make sure the police department makes good on a proposal for an African American advisory board and increased diversity training.
"It's important for police officers to realize that black people do not speak hip hop," Maupin said. "We're not all rappers and thugs and gangbangers. We speak the English language and we're entitled to the same amount of respect."
Ryff said the department is investigating how the video got on the air, who watched it and who edited it. He wouldn't discuss whether there would be any punishment for those involved.
The chief said that he hadn't been able to contact Schoville, a 25-year veteran of the Tempe force, because the officer is on vacation. A message was left with the department seeking comment from the sergeant.
Because the men in the video were not cited, Tempe police had no record of their names.

I don't mind if people call me "Kraut", my friends do that all the time. It's just a word. What matters is how you behave towards people. All that pseudo-PC stuff is just hypocritical.
Although it is a cliché though that all Germans eat Sauerkraut all the time. Many find it too, well, sour. I do actually love it, but I don't eat it all the time. But sometimes I ladle the stuff into my face directly from the jar. So I guess calling me a "Kraut" is not entirely wrong.

Andy Dick hasn't learned anything from the Michael Richards incident.
According to sources, the hopped-up comedian hopped onstage Saturday at L.A.'s Improv comedy club and dropped the n-bomb on a room full of stunned clubgoers.
Andy was heckling comedian Ian Bagg during his routine, when Dick allegedly got out of his seat, jumped onstage and began joking with Bagg. The subject of Michael Richards came up, but the two comics quickly moved past it. As Dick exited the stage, he suddenly grabbed the mic and shouted at the crowd, "You're all a bunch of niggers!"
Prejudice celebsThe stunned crowd gasped and stared at each other. Bagg tried to play it cool and move on with his set, but the laughs weren't there.
Calls to Dick's rep were not immediately returned.

I really doubt it is, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was some sort of setup.
It happened right before the release of Seinfeld Season 7 (which is selling really well) and they had Seinfeld himself all ready to go on Letterman for the "apology".
And since he is somehow getting into legal trouble over it, it can also be used to prop up the hate crimes bill in January.

Seinfeld was ready to go on to Letterman to whore his season 7 DVD release, just like every other celebrity goes on to his show or on Leno's show or any other show to do. If they don't have a reason to whore themselves, they don't go on the show.

I didn't mean that Seinfeld was on for the sole puprose if giving Richards an outlet for his "apology", but that it was just a convenient part of the equation.
I propbalby just didn't make that clear enough.
