It's a crime that Jack Nicholson didn't get a supporting actor nomination for The Departed.

Can't believe I'm going to have to see Dreamgirls now based on the number of nominations, always try to see the main nominated films and winners in the cinema.

Really want Abigail Breslin to win Supporting Actress, she was fantastic in Little Miss Sunshine.

I get out plenty. Remember, just because you work at a movie theater does not mean movies are the most important thing in the world to everyone else. Even the videogame industry makes more money than the movie industry. Don't you think that's sad? You should try harder to make more money.

You seem to think that I god damn well OUGHT to know what those movies are, or else I am less of a human being or something. Should I assume that you need to get out more because you've never heard of Gears of War?

They gave a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination to Borat. I don't even have to argue that the Oscars are irrelevant. The Academy's making that argument for me! This makes me more irrelevant than ever.

No, I am just suprised that somebody who frequents a film-related site seems to have such disdain for movies (and theaters) in general. You're right, I have never heard of Gears of War but I'm also not hangin' around any gaming forums.

By the way: Although I've heard of all of them, I haven't actually seen any of the 5 Best Picture nominees, so maybe we're more alike than it appears. (I also have Centipede on my office computer.)

This is a film oriented site? I thought it was more of a technical site. Then again I rarely wander outside of Yak or sometimes Afterlife since those are the only interesting forums to me.

As for disdain for theaters, they've earned it. There's nothing special about them anymore.

I lost interest in the Academy Awards back in 1977 when C3PO did not win best actor, and R2D2 did not win best supporting actor. They were not even nominated!

These days it's all about selling more DVDs (HDDVD, Blu-Ray, whatever). Last minute releases - Iwo Jima anyone? - will get some BO boost as well.

I think Mark Walberg has grown into a great actor. I'm glad he got over himself and all his legal and lifestyle "problems".

I thought he did a great job in:
"The Departed"
"The Italian Job"
...AND my favorite: "Boogie Nights"

I agree about that POS "Borat"... WTF? It just once again points out that the Academy is on that I-30 stuff and sniffing each others' butts.

It’s a long story how this works, Allison, but I’ll try to condense it for you: In order to be nominated for an Oscar, you first have to nominate yourself to be nominated in the catagory of your choice. What that means is this: the producers of a film decide what category they want their movie to be considered for, based in large part on what they think it has the best chance of winning. They then notify the Academy of the choice of catagory, and submit the film. The makers of Letters From Iwo Jima apparently felt the film was strong enough to win a Best Picture Oscar, so they went for that as opposed to “just” Best Foreign Language Film (you can’t set yourself up for both). The people who made Pan’s Labyrinth could have gone the same route, but probably decided that since there were strong contenders already in the Best Picture category, they had a much better shot at Best Foreign Language Film, which is what they asked to be considered for. Hence, all the ‘for your consideration” ads in the trade papers. What happens next is, all the members of the voting branches of the industry get inundated with DVDs of the all these movies, and eventually a ballot is circulated for the voters to make the official nominations.

So basically, you ask to be considered for the most prestigious category you think you have a reasonable shot at. Sometimes, it’s truly odd. A few years back, if you recall, the actress Jennifer Connelly (yowza!) won Best Supporting Actress for A Beautiful Mind, even though she was the female lead, and there was no-one to support but herself. Same philosophy: given the other probable contenders, the studio put her up for the category that they thought she could win. And she did.

Mark, I think there's more to it than that. In recent years, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON and LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL were nominated for both. The only reason that I can think of why LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA wouldn't have been nominated for Foreign Film is because Films in that category need to be submitted by their country's governments or something like that, and countries are only allowed to submit one movie. So maybe America decided to submit something else?

But this brings up another reason why the Academy's stupid. Why is it "Foreign Language" and not just "Foreign"?
