Any recommendations for a good printer which can also scan, copy and fax? There is a lot of stuff out there, but I am more interested in your views and experiences than the ads. It doesn't have to be a high profile machine, I don't have to scan in photos at an ultra-high resolution, just something which gives you decent and reliable functionality for your "home office".
Any experience with online services which allow you to send/receive faxes over the net?

My father has a Hewlett Packard OfficeJet 7410 "all in one" device that prints, scans, faxes and copies in color. Pretty nice device. It costs a little over $400.

We had an HP all in one, and it was good, but only lasted us 2 years. We do print a lot of stuff here, and it just wasn't made for the volume of printing we do.

We replaced it with a Canon PIXMA MP530 which we are extremely happy with. It was about $300 at Staples. It uses 4 ink cartridges, which seem to last a long time, and are pretty cheap to replace. I would have no problem recommending it, or the HP all in one devices if you are not looking at printing a huge amount on a regular basis.

The HP 4100 MFP is pretty good. Might be overkill for a home office, but we have several at work and they only ever seem to need toner. They're great for scanning in manuals. I don't know if they scan in color, however.

(No, they don't make them anymore, but it's worth looking into whatever the replacement model is.)

I still use my HP Deskjet 970CSE. It's an awesome printer which is more powerful than anything Bobby Henderson has even heard of, I'm sure. Anyway it's worked great for the past 5 or 6 years I've had it (forgotten how long it's been). I don't think they make stand-alone printers anymore. I think now you have to buy a printer/fax/scanner/copier/toilet paper dispenser combo.

Our office has a Minolta DiALTAColor CF3102 with a built in EFI Fiery RIP computer. It's like a big photocopy machine that prints, scans, color-copies, folds and staples all sorts of stuff. It stands by itself on the network (doesn't need to be attached to a computer), which is nice. The damned thing cost of fortune, but was supposed to save us lots of money on printing costs. After a few months I'm not so sure it's saving us anything over what we were paying to put toner into a cheap Konica/Minolta MagicColor 2300W color laser printer. It does print color a lot more reliably though (especially from Adobe applications).

What's funny is I don't even have a printer at home. Trying to go "paperless" there as much as possible.

I'd like to get rid of my HP LaserJet 5 and HP OfficeJet 7140xi all-in-one inkjet and upgrade to a laser all-in-one. (recommendations please...)

I'll keep my HP Photosmart 8750 that will print "B" size drawings (11"x17") and up to 13" x 19".

My HP can do anything! It is space-age. It even prints nice designs on toilet paper.

Are you some kind of tree-hugging hippie? Paper is made to be wasted. Sometimes I just crumple up wads of unused blank paper and burn them for no reason.

Does a Laser printer do OK with photos on photo paper? Or are ink jets still the best for that?

Inkjets are definitely better than lasers for photos, but lasers are much better for solid color text and graphics (presentations).

Inkjet prints on good glossy paper give the best photo quality. Large format thermal inkjet printers can make great looking poster sized prints and the color seems even more intensified when laminated. The downside to inkjet is UV rays can harm the prints.

Laser printers use electrostatic based printing. The color isn't as vivid, but it won't run if you drip anything on it.

Dunno yet, but the PIXMA MP530 recommended above is one of the units I already looked at. I think a good inkjet is more than enough for my purposes.

My HP 3 in one $90 special does a great job , has been reliable for 2 years now , even prints well on recycled paper [Cool]
