I was watching this weeks Family Guy on DVR and noticed that in the scene where Brian and Stewie go to rent the helicopter to get to Aspen, Stewie does a song number. During the song number, he gets transformed into a live action sequence with I assume Gene Kelly...

What I'd like to know is what film this sequence originally came from...you can actually see the original cartoon character's shadow under Stewie during the sequence as well...I'll post a screenshot here in a minute...

It's the Worry Song dance from the 1945 MGM musical Anchors Aweigh with Gene Kelly and Jerry (of Tom & Jerry).

While a funny episode, that sequence went on WAAAY too long, I guess they needed to pad some time as usual. [sleep]

I agree. I even said to myself that the sequence was longer than the usual Brian/Stewie bit.

Family Guy has ALWAYS done the extended-scene stuff. It's one of its trademarks. In this case, I figure since they're trying to impress us with the gimmick, why not go all the way and do the WHOLE scene? It's definitely not out of style with the show.

Since the effort required to edit out the original character and put in Stewie probably took more time and budget than the rest of the episode, I doubt that they decided to make this one longer just to fill time because they were out of ideas, or anything like that. I would think it would have been more economical to add another filler scene in somewhere instead, right?

"How's your novel coming?" is classic. The longer it goes, the funnier it gets. Another of those extended sequences is when Peter will hurt his shin and sit down, "Owww, owww, owww...."

Sometimes it seems like some animators may have a pet sequence that they've always wanted to "homage," and the format of FG allows for such indulgences. "Simpsons" does from time to time, like Lisa's dentist visit, when she's put under and becomes part of "Yellow Submarine." Not as long as this latest Gene Kelly sequence, but in that same vein, IMHO.

Another great FG indulgence was Stewie doing the infamous William Shatner performance of "Rocketman."

Oh, and Chris being pulled into the dairy case at the supermarket and becoming part of the ah-ha video "Take Me On."

Gawd, I love that show! [thumbsup]

Yeah Brian, that's one of my favorite bits from FG. You reminded me of Chris' reply there at the end. He sounds truly distressed.

The first time that was on, as soon as I saw the pencil-drawn hand beckon him from behind the milk, I burst out laughing, and was not disappointed with the remainder of that sequence.

I had a co-worker who is a big fan of the show, but is a twentysomething who never saw the original video. Fortunately, Youtube has great examples of both versions. Now she gets the joke.

BTW, I edited my earlier post, the song Stewie is reciting as William Shatner is of course "Rocketman." It is a perfect shot-for-shot spoof (of something that one would think too weird to spoof).

Did you see the two-part South Park where they destroy Family Guy, specifically the writing? Now THAT was funny stuff. Supposedly, after those episodes aired, people from Simpsons and King of the Hill sent the South Park people flowers for "doing God's work".

That's the dynamic I would almost expect. Each of those shows, in their own youth, were given crap all over the place. Family Guy comes along, the newbie, and all the long-running animated shows have to take a dump on it, just like high-school seniors have to dump freshmen in the trash can.

I saw that South Park episode (the two parter "Cartoon Wars") and found it very funny. Bart's cameo was amusing but I was hoping for more from him. The whole plot revolved around Cartman's indignation that people found his humor like the show "Family Guy" but tried to have the show canceled saying instead that if they depict the prophet Mohammed in an upcoming episode as planned, the United States would be attacked.

Apparently, at one point a few years ago, "Family Guy" actually DID depict Mohammed on one of their episodes. Of course this was before 9/11 and that Danish artist's cartoon that inspired that part of the SP episode.

At first, "Family Guy" seemed like a ripoff of "The Simpsons" but from the get-go, it had it's own style. I still like "The Simpsons, but the last few years have been but a thin shadow of the show at it's peak. Let's hope the movie captures some of that original wit.

Hmm, well Family Guy has "dumped" on the Simpsons before, during the parody of Naked Gun 1 opening, where stewie crashes into Homer at the end and Peter says "who's this guy". So they're not exactly saints themselves in that aspect. I'll agree with Hillary that the last few seasons of Simpsons have been kind of lame, but on the occasion they kill with a great episode. I'm not a huge Family Guy fan but I like how the humor is more risque. And I've never really watched South Park after that horrible movie that I walked out of. [Big Grin]

I think Cartman said it best:

"Don't you ever, EVER compare me to Family Guy, you hear me Kyle? Compare me to Family Guy again and so help me, I will kill you where you stand! Do you have any idea what it's like? Everywhere I go: "Hey Cartman you must like Family Guy, right?" "Hey, your sense of humor reminds me of Family Guy, Cartman!" I am nothing like Family Guy! When I make jokes they are inherent to a story! Deep situational and emotional jokes based on what is relevant and has a point, not just one random interchangeable joke after another!"

Family Guy does have its yuks from time to time, but it is not in the same class as South Park or The Simpsons or even King of the Hill. Like Mike said, Simpsons does still have its great episodes, but any show that is on for almost two decades can have that not-so-fresh feeling.

Mike, I wish you would give South Park another try. Their movie was pretty rough, but their episodes since 2000 or so have steadily improved to what I would consider near-genius status. They attack current events like none other and still mix in fart jokes. I think it goes down as one of the top 10 funniest shows of all time.

I'll probably check them out on the DVD sometime... I initially hated FG after the first episode because of stewie, but then got into it again after they brought it back on the air. What's weird is that I love Parker/Stone's Baseketball and Team America somewhat.

but it was a pretty blatant takeoff of the Simpsons episode from last season where Homer finds out he may have another dad that's a treasure hunter.

That was a pretty funny sequence. He actually "showed up" on an episode of Tom Goes to the Mayor last year.

A funny dig at FG during tonights Simpsons... marge remembers why she couldn't say no because of a childhood experience, and when its back to present day Homer says "Marge how was I supposed to know what you were thinking" and she says "I really dont know"(something along that line)... [Big Grin]

I think Family Guy is the greatest show ever, it's my all time favorite. I even got my girlfriend and her older brother into it.
