If you are a fan of British comedy, you likely have seen the BBC series "Are You Being Served" which originally aired in the UK from the early 1970s to the mid 1980s. It caught a 2nd wind in the 1990s on PBS in this country...and John Inman, the star of that show, also caught a 2nd wind to his career, touring America and promoting public tv. Darn, he was only 71 but he apparently suffered from liver problems that may have been brought on by an infection of hepatitis A...possibly caught while eating some tainted food (so I have read). He was the "poof" on the show, as the BBC execs labeled him...I am sorry to see him leave us.

I loved his character on the show. I doubt it would have been the success it was without Mr. Humphries. His character was a brilliant creation along with many memorable pieces that became standards in the show. My favorite was the way he answered the phone in the menswear department. His character had a very high pitched voice but whenever he answered the phone he always put on a 'butch' one and simply said 'Menswear...' In text it doesn't do it justice I'm sure (especially if you've never seen the show, but it was hilarious every darn time.

R.I.P. Mr Humphries. You sure did make me laugh.

We have watched "Are You Being Served?" on public TV here in the states for many years. All of the charactors on this series are wonderful. Mr. Inman was great.

He will be missed.
