I'm looking into the possibility of launching a podcast with a focus on the theatre industry. Topics would include projection, industry news, and other such stuff.

My question is:
Would anyone be interested in listening to such a podcast?

Furthermore, would anyone consider participating on the podcast in panel discussions? The show would be bi-monthly, panels and interviews would be conducted over Skype.

What do you guys think?

I would try to listen to it just out of curiosity. But my question is what could you actually put on the recording? I'd imagine it'd be stuff like:

Wednesday
-AMC is building a new theater which will have 48 screens.
-New movie to exhibited in digital cinema only.
-3 new threads on Film-Tech.

Thursday
-AMC is still building its new theater with 48 screens.
-That new digital cinema movie is still confirmed to be, well, digital.
-15 new replies on Film-Tech.

Friday
-AMC is still in the process of building their 48-plex. Will they ever be done?
-New movies opened today. Nobody cares. Movies that are actually good are rumored to be released sometime this year.
-Phil Hill has posted on Film-Tech. There are 76 replies with references to "coot" and whatnot because it is fucking hilarious.

Maybe you should go to youtube and see the two guys promoting about the newest Christie Digital Cinema projector ; throw away half of the visuals and it would not be too bad

Short answer, no. As Joe mentioned, is how do you keep the content fresh and interesting? How will you keep up a listener base for such a niche area of interest? I imagine tips & tricks, booth mishap horror stories, etc. would keep it interesting from time to time. Apart from that, I don't know what you could put in a regular podcast that would keep people interested.

Sounds like a cool idea. I'll offer to slut myself out for free on a bi-monthly bases and talk about how hot the guys on "300" were.

You don't need an iPod to listen, just iTunes.

yes, for the next five minutes the incredable sound of the kinoton dp75, followed by a classic recording of the sweet sound of a century jj running 70mm. Later in the hour we will reveal the machine gun sound effects of the IMAX sr that untill now have only been heard by a select few...........

To keep enough content to keep it interesting, it would probably have to be a monthly or bi-weekly cast.

I would certainly listen, and I'd recommend trying to talk Joe R. into being on the show... his posts are always entertaining. Try to go for different "segment" ideas to keep things rolling... beyond just industry news, have stuff like rants & raves, presentation horror stories, booth horror stories, and of course tips & trips which was already suggested. We already have the forum for news and information on this stuff, so I think the goal should be to add another dimension and make the show something really fun to listen to.

I for one hate listening to podcasts where conversations are conducted over Skype... there's just something missing when the people aren't in the same room with eachother, and makes it less interesting to listen to. I realize this is probably near impossible, but it's just something to keep in mind for when it might be possible to have the person actually there with you.

May I suggest an alternative that will achieve the same ends?

I recently became acquainted with an Amateur Radio/Technology/Computing/Digital Photography show called Amateurlogic.tv You can find it at

There are 3 guys originally all from Mississippi who put together a monthly IPTV show. It's great.

However they are finding the workload a bit hard and are encouraging people to send in segments to be included on the show, thus lightening their workload.

All the guys use Panasonic 3CCD cameras. I have taken up the challenge and just purchased a Panasonic NV-GS300 and hope to film some Amateur Radio and other segments in the very near future down here in Melbourne Australia. I also hope to film a tour of a local projection room at a Drive-in Theatre and look at the equipment and radio transmitting equipment used (Lunar, Dromana - any offers?)

I think what you are proposing would mesh very neatly with the general ambience of the program but you need to go to video not audio. Remember film is a visual medium and pictures tell a thousand words.

I would also encourage others with the appropriate video equipment and interest to submit segments for inclusion on the program. It would be great to get some items about film or projection included and also see some of the folks who hang around here in glorious DIGITAL VIDEO.

In particular perhaps John Pytlak, when his health improves, might like to take up the challenge and do some segments. John is a fountain of knowledge and I would love to see him do some segments about film, perhaps on formats or basic projection techniques.
