Yea... but which Strand...

On Monday, May 7, 2007 around 3am the Strand Theater in Evanston, Wyoming went up in flames. The catastrophic fire gutted the theater. The roof also collapsed during the fire fighting operations and the building will most likely be torn down. Also because of the roof collapse fire officials have said the cause of the fire may never be known because it is too dangerous to try to go through the remains of the building.

Construction on the historic Strand began in 1917 and it opened in 1918 with a mix of Vaudville and Silent Films. The theater was last shown on a tour of Evanston the day before it burned.

I see the fire was hot enough to cook out the marquee sign faces (unless they were broken out during the fire-fighting effort). It's a shame that sign is probably a total loss.

Old signs often had porcelainized paint jobs, which can last for several decades. Hardly anyone pays extra for that kind of work these days. As a result very few sign companies and other painting facilities can offer porcelainized work.

Yes, with that much heat, you wonder how the metal structure of the building is if the heat weakened the temper of the metal.

..new parking lot for that dusty, windy city in WYO....

The following is new news... got this from the construction crew there. The building is being stabilized. Both side walls and the rear will come down to 18" above the neighboring buildings and capped with flashing, the marquee has been removed for safety concerns, and they are going to try to re-use the facade. The site may see a restaurant in the very near future but probably not a movie theater. It was only a buck house anyway. According to the site workers the insurance company has decided they are going to do a full investigation into the cause of the fire once the walls are stablized.

What metal, the structure was all wood and brick. Excepting the marquee and poster cases. All thats standing are brick walls. [Eek!]
