I am changing providers at home within a month, dial-up to cable, different companies. [thumbsup]

Is there a way or program that I can send out a mass e-mail to all the names Outlook Express has memorized, so I don't loose anybody? I would hate to have to enter each name on many e-mails. [Mad]

Dan,

You should be able to have your tech support walk you through setting up OLE (Outlook Express) if that is what you used prior. If you are just looking to change, I would suggest Outlook, or Mozilla's Firebird. Both are very good.

If you would like me to help you setup either of these program, send me an email. Just make sure you have the following whether I help you or Tech Support helps you.

Incoming POP or IMAP server
Outgoing POP or IMAP server
your Username
your Password

If the incoming server is POP, the outgoing will probably be SMTP.

You'll also need to know if secure authentication is needed or not.

To do a quick mass mail from Outlook Express...
Open a New email
Click on the Bcc: label - If it's not there use the To: label. I just like to use Bcc so that everyone doesnt get everyone's address.
The address book will open. click the first name to hilite it. Scroll to the bottom of the list then press the shift key and click on the last name. All names should be hilited. Click the Bcc:-> button and all the names will be added to the Bcc.
Click OK.
In the text area of your new note type what you want then Send.

If you wait till you change the ISP settings on you outlook express they may find it easier to add your new address to their mail clients.

To add to Ken's thoughts... you might want to send your email out twice; the first from your existing service. A new email from a different server, even though it's from you might be inadvertently filtered as spam.

Good Advice, thank you, but here is my question:

I only have roughly a dozen names in the "CONTACTS" folder, but Outlook has memorized (When you hit the first letter of who the e-mail is going to, it gives you many choices of previous e-mail adresses) over 200 e-maill adresses from my my previous correspondence. These are the names I need to send to, since my current address is known throughout the world of vintage & club Auto racing and collector car clubs.

Can I recover those names easilly?

Ok, a slightly more complicated issue. What you see is stored in a file with a .NK2 suffix on Outlook. I believe it is the same for Outlook Express but won't be sure till I can look at my home machine. This is what Microsoft calls your "Nickname File". This is a poor description because it holds so much more. The file layout is undocumented but I have found a web page with some freeware if you would like to tske a look at it... NK2View
BTW, this is one place that can be used as evidence of who you converse with if your computer is ever taken in a case.

Also, I am also going to have to set-up an auto-reply with my old e-mail to alert to the new adress. Can this also be easilly accomplished?

I've used Eudora since I first started on the internet... so I'm pretty much set in my ways there.

This program has what it calls a "signature", which will automatically apply to the end of whatever email you compose. Other programs might have the same feature. That's what I'd be looking for. You could put your notice in a signaure file, and it would go out to everyone you send an email to.

To save yourself this pain the next time you change ISP's, have you considered getting yourself a domain of your own and using that domain for your E-Mail?

Many hosting companies offer E-Mail-only hosting so you can access your mail at dan@reiter.com (for example).

Google also offers the ability to have your domain mail hosted through GMail. You may want to check that out as well.

That's precisely what I did a couple of years ago, and for the reasons you state.

Despite having a relatively unusual name, enticknap.com and .org had both gone. I had to settle for .net.

Well, I may have met my match on this. The NK2 file is not used in Outlook Express. I have OE version 6 on my home machine but it seems not to use the .DBX files to store the stuff as the older versons did. I tried searching for one of the addresses it came up with for autocompletion but was unable to locate it anywhere so it probably is not stored in ASCII (on OE 6 anyway). Thats good for stopping email worms that steal your friends addresses but not for what you need to do. I have one final sugestion. It's a lot of work but if you have a large number of messages still in your system you could bring up one at a time the INBox, Sent Items, and Deleted Items, sort them in From sequence (clck the From column header) then for each person you have mail from right click and add them to your contacts. When you are all done you can use my first sugestion to mail to them all. When all is said and done you may wish to export your contact list to a file and save it somewhere (click file then export then contacts). Sorry I couldn't provide a better answere. If you have any of the MS Office suites loaded on your system and Outlook is included you may want to look at using that. It can import an existing contact list usually and there are more tools available.

I just looked at your last post and realise I didn't address your last issue. It looks like OE-6 does not have the auto-reply feature. I hate to tell anyone to switch programs but if you have access to Outlook it has an out of office feature that can do just what you are looking for including only sending the message once to each persone instead of replying to every message.

It worked perfectly. I ran the program, and it immediately pulled up all the names. I selected only the e-mail colloum, copied & pasted it into the "To" Box, and was on my way.

You are very welcome. Glad I was able to help. One small CYA you might consider is using the program to gather all the contacts and import them into an address book or otherwise file them for safe keeping.

I've used Eudora since version 2. something. Unfortunately, Qualcomm is focusing on other programs and has dropped support and has no plans to further develop Eudora. I *believe* that they are also involved with Thunderbird development, but I could be wrong.

At any rate, as long as I can, I'll stick with my Eudora. The only thing it doesn't do (easily) is insert small graphic images into the sig file. Aside from that, Eudora does everything else I need/want it to do.. [Smile]

Okay guys I have a problem. We had a problem with our old computer and the motherboard is shot. We got a new computer cause the cost to get a new motherboard and the memory and everything for it was going to be worth more than just a new computer.

Now we've got the hard drive from the old computer put in an external case so that we could get the information from it so that we didn't loose all our work.

Where and how can I get the information for my contacts out of Outlook? We have all the contact in Outlook are for our Weekly Newsletter distribution list. What am I looking for, and where?

Assuming you're using Outlook and not Outlook Express, everything (Email, Calendar entries, Contacts, etc.) is kept in a file called outlook.pst. This is kept in this directory:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Replace "username" with the user name you use to log into Windows. If you're not sure, you can just browse in the "Documents and Settings" directory. The "Local Settings" folder is usually hidden, but if you type it in you'll be able to get to it.
