Bond is back — and he wants revenge.

Producers have revealed some of the secrets about the latest James Bond film, due for release later this year, including the inner turmoil that drives its suave superagent hero and its title: "Quantum of Solace."

As titles go, it's not as mellifluous as "From Russia With Love" or "Goldfinger." But Daniel Craig, returning as Bond after 2006's "Casino Royale," says he likes it.

"It has grown on me," Craig told reporters on the film's set at Pinewood Studios near London on Thursday. "It doesn't trip off the tongue. But why should it?"

Producer Michael G. Wilson said the title, chosen only a few days ago, was taken from a story by Bond creator Ian Fleming that appears in the collection "For Your Eyes Only."

Craig said Fleming defined a quantum of solace — it means, roughly, a measure of comfort — as "that spark of niceness in a relationship that if you don't have, you might as well give up."

Filming began earlier this month at Pinewood, the franchise's home since the 1960s. It's a direct sequel to 2006's "Casino Royale," beginning an hour after that film ends, with Bond devastated by his betrayal by true love Vesper Lynd.

"He had his heart broken at the end of the last movie and that certainly is a spur for him in this one," Craig said.

"I'd be lying if I said there wasn't revenge in his heart. But it's more than that. That spurs him on, but that's not what the movie is. It's not a revenge movie. It's about him figuring a few things out."

Producer Barbara Broccoli said the film, directed by Marc Forster ("Monster's Ball," "The Kite Runner"), mixes Bond's "inner turmoil" with action — and of course gadgets — as he tries to stop a shadowy cabal trying to bring down the world economy.

Craig's second Bond adventure continues in the gritty vein of "Casino Royale," in which a rough-edged 007, newly granted his "license to kill," bled, sweat and felt real emotion. But Wilson promised it also has "twice as much action" as its predecessor.

"It's pretty jam-packed," he said.

Filming began at Pinewood three weeks ago. Location shooting will take place in Italy, Austria, Panama, Chile and Peru.

Mathieu Amalric is a new addition as villain Dominic Greene. But the French actor, star of the Oscar-nominated "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," won't be sporting a trademark tic like many of his predecessors.

He and Forster decided his villainy should come from within.

"That's maybe what is horrible about today," Amalric said. "We can't guess who the villains are. The villains are invisible."

Amalric said he modeled his character to some extent on former Prime Minister Tony Blair and French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

"I've been taking details, the smile of Tony Blair, the craziness of Sarkozy, he's the worst villain we've ever had," he said.

Bond may find solace — producers are coy — in the arms of two Bond Girls — Ukrainian Olga Kurylenko as a feisty Bolivian named Camille and Gemma Arterton as an MI6 agent named Fields.

"In the movie, he is obviously still attached to his past," said Kurylenko. "The appearance of this new girl might divert him. Or, it might not."

Craig, who overcame public skepticism — a blond Bond? — to win rave reviews for "Casino Royale," said he still felt nervous about the role.

"All the fear I felt before is still there," he said.

"This is a $200 million movie, and it's James Bond. We have to make it great."

Somehow I don't see "Quantum of Solace" taking a place along the great Bond titles. But who knows?

Moonraker is still the best because there are a surplus of space shuttles ready to go at any given time. If the airport metal detector goes off, all you have to do is smile and they will let you pass.

Favorite 007 film titles? I'm not sure. But Quantum of Solace definitely ranks as a least favorite title. MGM/UA/Sony will have to plaster that "007" logo all over every piece of marketing material because that Quantum of Solace doesn't give out a Bond vibe at all.

From Russia With Love has a certain humorous quality to it considering the context of the story.

Quantum of Solace sounds like a metaphysical Sci fi flick. I like Octopussy the best I think, because it's sort of a "wink wink" title, which pretty much sums up Moore's take on Bond.

I still fondly remember Bambi and Thumper from "Diamonds are Forever". These were the 2 wrestler chicks who were guarding Jimmy Dean to keep him from escaping..

I'd like to hear Carly Simon throw 'Quantum Of Solace' into the opening song. She managed to get 'The Spy Who Loved Me' in...but this is a real challenge.

Maybe they should ask Madonna to do it again. She can throw any stupid lyric into a song.

Although I though NSNA was good, it's not an EON production and assume those are what most'd refer to as the 'real' Bond films.

The original 'Casino Royale' can hardly even qualify as a movie let alone a Bond film. Torture, yes...Bond film, non.

Yes I do agree the film was as bad a dog on a pizza.

But it is still a Bond film.

As is NSNA

You can not do a comparison of all the films, if you do not include all the films bad or good. No matter who produces them.

As far as titles go I liked the Connery remake of Thunderball called "Never Say Never Again" the movie was only fair and it lacked the music (or even good music) but it had the real Bond!

NSNA was pretty good action wise and all that, and the makeup artists did a great job blending in Connery's toupee and keeping it on his head at all times.

Connery had a toupee from about Thunderball on! The underwater shots of Connery his toupee was umm well didn't look right they should have put a cap on him underwater! The film wasn't what they wanted it to be and Connery said he was satisfied with the film but it wasn't the film they outlined! The guy that wrote it and Thunderball has 11 more scripts of the same damn film. He tried to remake it one more time but the courts said no!

I liked the fellow that had the role of Q in it! Now don't come down on me I like the real Q as well.

I edited the list to include "Never Say Never Again." I agree that while it's not among the "official" Bond films, it's still a James Bond 007 film and deserves to be on the list.

There's no need to add the other Casino Royale because the thread starter asked "what's your favorite Bond TITLE," not what movie is your favorite.

Mike no one could like the original film Casino Royal the TV program wasn't bad but you can't do a bond story in 30 minutes and he was American and well it just wasn't really bond!

Actually, the court said yes and that was the problem. Kevin McClory owned the remake rights to Thunderball and Thunderball only. The court said he could remake it all he wants, but he could not deviate from the existing story. Since all he could do was change character names and locales, he was not able to raise the money to produce any additional remakes after NSNA. This is also what killed his animated James Bond cartoon show project in early 1990's. I still remember the full page Varitey adds promoting this upcoming (but never happened) cartoon series.

I thought he could remake the two scripts that had been made but not the 9 scripts that hadn't. As the 9 scripts had 4 or 5 different plots, but then that was 15 to 17 years ago I could be all wet!

Sean Connery looked younger and more fit in "Never Say Never Again" than he did in "Diamonds Are Forever" 12 years earlier.

They may not try to fit the title of this new one into the theme song. Back in 1983, I was eager to learn what the title song to "Octopussy" would be like. Personally I like the song, but was terribly dissapointed that there was no attempt to use the title in the song.

DEVO would have been able to do it.

Mike...minor correction suggestion: Since it appears you listed the films in their production order, "Never Say Never Again" should be positioned between "Octopussy" and "A View To A Kill."

Ah...View to a Kill. I ran that first run in 1985. Roger Moore's last Bond film, thank God.
My favorite scene is where the gal (I forgot her name and am too lazy to look it up) is on top of a hill yelling "James!" when the blimp comes up behind her and she is scooped up into it.

Another Way To Die is the name of the theme to 'Quantum Of Solace'...it may grow on me, but I doubt it. As it stands at this point in history, this song's right up there with Madonna's.

Here's a fun game: go to the Merriam-Webster word of the day site and pick any random two words and join them with any conjunction, you'll have a new Bond title at least as good as Quantum of Solace. Try it! I think this may be how they came up with this title too!

Also, I hate Bond movies. I liked them when I was a kid, but then I watched Live and Let Die, and that 13 minute boat chase scene opened my eyes. Now I hate them.

In the late 1980s, German distributors began translating Bond titles more closely. Before, they had either invented a new title or modified the original title so non-english speaking audiences would understand it.

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER became DIAMANTENFIEBER (Diamond Fever),
THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS became DER HAUCH DES TODES (Touch/Breath of Death)
FOR YOUR EYES ONLY became IN TÖDLICHER MISSION (Deadly Mission)
A VIEW TO A KILL became IM ANGESICHT DES TODES (Facing Death)

When they translated the original titles almost verbatim, this gave some unpleasant results because each language has its distinct character.

TOMORROW NEVER DIES has a nice rhythm, its direct translation DER MORGEN STIRBT NIE appears somehow clumsy to German ears. Just like STIRB AN EINEM ANDEREN TAG for DIE ANOTHER DAY.

But never have I seen audiences remain so silent after a Bond preview trailer like after the title EIN QUANTUM TROST (Quantum of Solace) appeared on the screen. This must be the dullest and least exciting title ever used for a Bond movie, no matter what Mr Craig thinks. He is paid well enough to like any title they come up with.

LOL - the producers will have the last laugh...since clearly the obligatory pre-credits sequence must be set in the new Large Hadron Collider facility in Switzerland!!!!

Bond confronts stock-in-trade deranged BOND VILLAIN
BOND VILLAIN: "So Meester Bond - now your distinguished career comes to an end!"
A FIGHT ensues. Shortly, Bond THROWS BOND VILLAIN INTO the particle accelerator and throws a switch! BOND VILLAIN is accelerated to close to the speed of light and is vapourised!
