I never had much luck with Facebook.. it was very restrictive in who you could contact, I thought. Either that, or I just couldn't figure it out.

Yeah FB is pretty cool. I like the people you may know box, some of the people you haven't seen for years end up there, Awesome. Also theres a few projection groups on there. Funny stuff.

I'm on Facebook but I hardly ever go there. I go to MySpace a little more often but still not all that often. I don't have time to keep up with real life, let alone social networking life!

Same here. I closed my myspace page a while back because of this and all of the stupid spam I kept getting. I would get all kinds of half naked people trying to become my friends so they could advertise porn sites to me. I got fed up with maintaining it.

A few months ago I started a Facebook page because many of my classmates from high school were on there and they are planning our fifteen year reunion for next summer so I wanted to be kept updated since I missed the last one. Now I get people sending me all these requests for hatchery and Christmas ornaments and stuff that I have no clue about. I only check it every few days and I ignore all of that stuff. All-in-all it is pretty cool. What projectionist groups are there?

So on Facebook, if I ignore a smile or Christmas ornament or present under my tree or hatchery or one of the other thousand things that people send me, does it tell them that I ignored it? I am not trying to offend my friends and family but I don't have time to keep up with all of that stuff.

Josh, yeah you can ignore it, and in fact I think on the preferences page, you can turn off notifications of that stuff.

..and that was a good little movie with a great soundtrack and excllent sound presentation!

Bit of history with "Xanadu" in this area of the country: Summer of 1980 in Salt Lake City. Theatre playing "Xanadu" is the famous VILLA Theatre - a grandeur Cinerama house which was converted to single eye 70mm shortly after the demise of Cinerama. Booth contained Century JJ's and Ashcraft lamphouse. First theatre in this city to install Dolby Stereo. The Villa opened up "Xanadu" and the movie was a big hit ... NOT due to the film since it really was a bomb - dropping like flies in major venues, yet the Villa was experiencing sellout crowds and the number were climbing every day. Universal call up MANN Theatres who owned the Villa and asked 'what the flip is going on there. we're dying everywhere else. What is your MAGIC?"

....it was the sound that sold the movie. That was the MAGIC in this MOVIE that attracted the crowds.

I've heard Dolby Stereo presentations before - the First "Star Trek" I saw at the old Century 21 domes down there in SLC which was horrible (optics needed cleaning in as well as the film - sound was scratchy and so dull - let along the scope tabs were not opened...) that previous year. But, this experience with "Xanadu" at the Villa was an experience that I'll never forget.

..it was also real sad to see the Pan Pacific Auditorium burn down in 1983 - where some of "Xanadu" was shot at..

I've tried Facebook twice, hated it with a passion both times. What is with these "ornaments" or other graphical icons people send you? Are the recipients supposed to somehow appreciate that? Only a woman could have thought this shit up.

I tend to agree, but I think FB is more targeted to teens and young adults who love this giddy stuff -along with those who want to stray away from MySpace since that has really gotten rather crazy and now with stricter rules..

Yet, it's really amazing that older people love FB for the simple fact of communicating with fam members who are far away from home....and just to say "hello."

Someday, the future will invent something technically advanced which will permit us to all say "hello" to each other no matter the distance. I predict that this invention will be called "e-mail". It will be even easier to use than Facebook!

That buildings facade was a treasure of late art deco/streamline moderne that was sadly lost to the world. I'm sure the photos don't do justice.

a park was created using the same design that the building was known for.. below

I'm on both FB and MS, but tend to keep Facebook for people I ACTUALLY know, and apparently people from High School. I ignore most of the crap "You've received a snowball, throw one back!" requests. I keep it mainly so I can keep an eye on what friends are doing and a better way to share photos for the time being.

And yes, my tech-trend-savvy friend says Twitter is the next place to be.

I wish Facebook would stop those stupid applications. No I don't want to be a "mobster" or "send a birthday cake". If I want to send a birthday cake, I will send an actual EDIBLE BIRTHDAY CAKE.

Facebook is absolutely stupid. Myspace isn't much better, but at least the thing isn't littered with those applications (which are as annoying as advertising popups). The problem with Myspace is that they let people design their own pages/hack it/whatever and then you can't find links because the pages are all shitted up. [Roll Eyes]

I got onto facebook after a High-School reunion. It seemed like a decent enough way for us to keep in touch...wereas most of us are not in the same industry (none are in mine, I think) and the Reunion companies seem to cost a buch of $$$$ for what seems to be rather little value.

I'm not really into the sending people stuff (or receiving them)....though I have engaged in some of the games like Bowling Buddies....mindless time.

The problem with sites like Classmates.com is that people register their names and never return, upon discovering that they have to pay in order to contact anyone.

Meanwhile, the site spams you with solicitations to join, so you're forced to blacklist them, and any future messages from legitimate members go straight into the trash!

So when you stumble upon the site, it looks great and shows all of these names... of people you can't contact.

Myspace is littered with those mobster and "giving presents" and "passing out drinks" programs too, I don't know which site started it first as I'm rather new to Facebook, but at least with Facebook, you can turn off the notifications, and the template is much neater than myspace.

How I got involved with Facebook is due to my wife's family being spread all over the country and love to keep in more direct contact with one another via more personal means than by email - in short than with direct phone communication.

Besides, it's just plain fun being on FB at times.

Yeah, that's the real deal breaker with Classmates. Your membership has to be of paid, "gold" status in order for you to send anyone in your class some messages. I'm not sure, but I think the recipient of your message also has to be a paying customer as well.

I'm sure one could defend the pay system for Classmates as a means to cut down on phony accounts and other stuff like that. Unfortunately too many real people just register for free and don't bother returning.

Maybe I'll try out Facebook or Twitter to see if any of my high school classmates are there. Hardly any are on MySpace, and I've hardly been doing anything with MySpace lately anyway.

I really don't like either Facebook or MySpace.

It's not so much the insane amounts of time people spend on there (and they do spend insane amounts of time on there!). What really annoys me in particular is that rather than facilitate real-life interactions, these sites tend to be a substitute for them.

Some people say that they use it to keep in touch with their friends so they know what's being organized for next weekend or what have you. Email can do this too.

Facebook can be useful for finding an old friend. I used it to track down an old high school buddy. Now we keep in touch via phone and email. I have to give credit where it's due. [Smile]

Whenever I meet someone new, if they are not willing to swap phone numbers, or at the very least email addresses and insist that we *must* contact each other on Facebook or MySpace, I am no longer interested in staying in touch with that person; quite simply, I cannot be bothered at that point. Am I sounding like an old curmudgeon yet? [Big Grin]

Finally, when I first started MySpace/Facebook accounts, people would send me messages that went something like, 'LOL your profile looks a bit neglected dude !!!11!' or maybe something like, 'Dude! You should totally pimp that thing out LOL!!1!!!'. Yeah, let me spend MORE TIME on MySpace...can't wait! [Smile]

I signed up for Classmates years ago but got annoyed when people tried contacting me and it asked me to pay a stupid fee just to find out who it was. I finally signed up for a trial membership a month ago and it just ran out. I had been trying to get back in contact with an old classmate who went into the Marines and I suspected that he was one of the people who contacted me so I signed up. In the end he was not one of the people who contacted me but I did get back in touch with a few others before my membership ran out. We all moved over to Facebook to plan our fifteen year reunion next year. Much less headache there than at Classmates.

No, they don't, actually. I am a paid member of Classmates (that's how I discovered all of this), and I have been able to break through to a couple of friends who aren't members - but just out of sheer luck. The trick is, they have to NOT have Classmates.com on their SPAM list, or they won't get your message (it'll go straight in the trash). Of course, once you do make contact, you can just exchange email addresses and cut Classmates out of the loop entirely.

Joshua, you're probably thinking of the ploy where they email you that someone has viewed your profile... and they want you to pay to "find out who's interested in you".

Back to Myspace... I had my profile set to private. Let's try this again.

I've been on Facebook for some four years now with little problems, other than a couple of creepy guys messaging me. MySpace profiles I hate with a passion. Hate the layout and all the heinous crap people put on it that make the page load forever.

I agree. I've been farting around with mine for a couple days, trying to get it to just MOVE faster/smoother. It's futile. I deleted all msgs that had videos attached, and the one video I had featured. Now, I only have four photos total on the profile page: my headshot in the title, a low-res background image, a miniscule contact block image, and a med. sized display picture on the right... and it's still taking forever to just scroll down the page!!! Maybe it's my computer.

I had Myspace before, it's a whole bunch of garbage on many different levels. Junk and rude young people.

Since I have joined Facebook - I have found many people I went to school with, a whole lot of relatives (even my Grandmother!) and renewed old friendships.

So - I'm liking Facebook a lot better than Myspace. It's more classy - that's for sure.

I definitely prefer facebook to myspace. I have just recently begun trying out twitter, mostly to get experience, for manageing my theaters facebook/twitter. I used to run the myspace and was sitting with about 1500 friends and 6k hits before I was asked to torpedo it out of existence last week.

Even though it's not a social networking site, I've been a member of DeviantArt since May of 2007 and one of my friends from grade school found me by looking up his home town. (I draw comics, he is a photographer.)
A lot of kids try to use the site for social networking, calling it DeviantSpace. Some of my crew members have followed me onto the site, but few have posted any art or photos. (Likely as a result of my "mature contenting" some of my pages, which if one isn't a member mature contented pages ain't visible.)

My daughter was on DevianArt while she was her last two years of high school when she was heavilly drawing MANGA and Animine, but the contention that arose on this page, esp in the chat section was really getting to her along with losing interest in the art form and got out of it completely.

It's almost like Manga and Anime run that site sometimes. I have a few of the girls who are into that watching me. They comment that my drawing style is "unique", probably because I don't draw Manga and Anime.
The chat rooms and forums at Deviantart is infested with trolls. The forums here on Film Tech have spoiled me with civility. Seriously. I wish the forums on the local newspaper's website was this civil.

Ya, I finally got the facebook thing. Just a couple weeks ago for that matter. I vowed that Myspace and Connexions were enough but boredom and curiousity got the best of me so here I am! I am still confused by it tho. All four of my friends constantly want to send me hugs, snowballs, quiches, cookies, cats, drive in theaters, player pianos (okay, so some of those things I made up!) and I have no freakin idea what they mean or what to do with them. Oh well, I guess I'll learn as I go along.

If I can ever figure out how to post links per Brad's rules, I'll go ahead and post my Myspace and Facebook links.

I couldn't believe how troll-less this forum was either. Most of the other forums i've been a part of were heavily trolled, and reminded me of 4chan at times. Somethingawful is civil, but you gotta pay $10 to join, so it discourages people from trying to get banned.

One of the main reasons this forum works (for the most part) is that people are required to use their real names and not hide behind an alias. That way your posts represent YOU. It also helps that the avatars are required to be of you and not of, say, the Chevy logo or whatever. It makes the forums feel more like a real community.
