Ricardo Montalban was classy in all his work. He recently did the voice of a classy cow on The Simpsons.

Yes Ricardo Montalban carried ST-II and arguably he kept the ST franchise alive for all the subsequent movies etc.

He better get a proper sendoff at the next Oscars, and not get shafted like DeForest Kelly did when he passed. [Mad]

Did they mention James Doohan either? I don't think so. [thumbsdown]

They're remember him. Because his career was so long, including Technicolor MGM musicals with Esther Williams. I expect to see a clip from that era, and him as Khan.

But they'll probably just show him in a white suit saying, "Smiles everyone, smiles!"

He was great in the "Naked Gun" movie, too.

I don't think he will make this year's Awards as I think they do that back calandar year.

I do recall a James Doohan tribute though I don't remember D-Kelly.

They mentioned Heath Ledger at last year's Oscars.

Also, I would think they'd more likely use a Khan image than a Fantasy Island image, since Khan was an actual film role. BUt my bet is just on a screen of text that shows his name.

I think RM will make into to this year's Oscar show tribute and Patrick McGoohan as well.

Seems we all agree that Montalban's performance as Khan was key in reviving the franchise. Of course he had that great Nicholas Meyer script. What was the line about Kirk "tasks" him and he will have him - chase around the moons of something and through perdition's flames? Great stuff. I am fighting the desire to watch it again due to the upcoming Blu-ray release.

I looked at the ad Phil posted, and that Cordoba is one ugly car. That was not a great period in American car design.

But, Ricardo sure said "cor-DOH-buh" better than anyone else.

I wish they had written "corinthian leather" into his role as Khan, though.

I have it on good authority that Brad was recently seen driving around Dallas in one of those 1975 Cordoba's while wearing a long fur coat and a fedora hat with a feather...asking for directions...

The '70s were not a good time for cars from anywhere most were ugly and all of them ran like shit because of recently introduced exhaust emissions requirements and the technology to achieve them was primitive.

Oh f**k me, Montalban's suave performance in that ancient Cordoba commercial Phil posted makes me want to buy one even if it was a POS! [Big Grin]

RM saved Star Trek AND he sold thousands (hundreds of thousands? MILLIONS??!!) of crappy cars for freaking Chrysler too!!! [beer]

RIP Ricardo Montalban. You may have just been an actor, but you left a mark and you will not be forgotten.

At the beginning of the vid it sure sounds like he says "Core-Bo-Ba" then later starts saying it correctly. Granted I'm dyslexic so d's and b's can sometimes be hard to distinguish for me, but I listened multiple times.

Not that many people would care, but Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was the first movie to unveil that classic "70MM" logo Paramount used through the remainder of the 1980s and a few times in the 1990s. Here's an example of the 70mm logo in a Lawrene of Arabia joke.

I seem to remember giving a Brad a "this auditorium features 70mm projection" sign thingie with the same logo some time back. Did that sign ever get installed?

Another nice one...that no Star Trek movie ever used...

There's the sfx of a door opening right when he says that, combined with compression, and the overall poor quality of the recording that makes it sound that way.

Ricardo was a great actor, he was even able to salvage the role of Mr. Roarke on "Fantasy Island" from being a total disaster, despite not having anything to work with in terms of script. (His role was all exposition, explaining everything to the midget. )

I drove a '76 Cordoba with the 360 CID up front on a temp basis.

Thing was comfortable to drive and easy for me to handle. Granted, coming from import econoboxes to a yacht like this one was something to get used to with that dognose way out there.

..but the thing flew down the freeway.,...
