After receiving forwards from my wife's families that contains tonnage of email addresses, I wanted to pass this along to members here on the forum:

This topic is of email security - which protect you and others from "email harvesting” – anybody that can easily search to “harvest” tons of emails, sells them to marketers, spammers, hackers, and what have you that desire to have your privacy and personal security invaded.

Thus, as in tennis terms "a little help" here below for you and all you do communicate with:

When you receive forwards from other people, you notice that you've got quite the tonnage of email addresses in your possession right there on your screen.

Sure, it’s easy to simply forward this email to others that you wish to see and share what you received...and, you wish to forward this info on down the line - like to us here domestically and/or internationally, thus we recipients also see these tonnage of email addresses that were attached to the original message.

…which is an excellent harvest to those listed above who wants to make money off of you.

Thus, for your protection and security, please do two things when you want to forward an email letter to anyone:

When you click "forward", you notice that all the emails are still intact in the message box. Highlight, by clicking on one address, then hold the left mouse button and drag the arrow to where all the names have become highlighted.

Then, release the mouse button and hit the "DELETE" key. This will delete all of the addresses in the body of the message.

Now, when you do a "FORWARD" of this message, open up, (or if already present) the "BCC" - blind carbon copy section of the address box and put the email addresses that you want to FORWARD your message to in here.

This way, only one person on your email list will see your forward when they receive it and will not see any other email addresses that you included in your forward.

This will definitely eliminate 'harvesters' capturing emails, storing them until it’s time to “sell the crop” to those above.

On the rare occasion I forward I will cut and paste. I do not Blind Carbon but I will startin the future. Great advice.

Very good tip Monte.

Just to illustrate your point. Here's a Thunderbird composition window. You would select BCC from the dropdown box to the left of where you enter the address of the person you're sending the message to. The exact procedure will vary by email client, but they are mostly the same.

The other thing I like to do is consult Snopes.com and pass the info along if it's not true. Snopes.com

What browser are you using? I use Firefox with the AdBlocker add on and I literally forget how cluttered the internet is with ads and pop-ups.

I don't get any pop-ups when I load Snopes.

This is why I absolutely detest people who see some stupid "funny picture" or "OMG the world will end" to everyone in their address book. First off, I've probably already seen the "funny" picture. Second, these email "warnings" I get are always bullshit. But the most important is the third. I have found the kind of people who forward to tons of people like that are among the stupid, and they often are sending to their equally stupid friends, of whom all it takes is one of their computers to be infected with a virus of some form to harvest your email address and then that's it...you get tons of spam due to this fucktard randomly forwarding useless crap.

Also, if I send "Bob" an email and I don't CC "John" on it, Bob has no right to forward that email to John as it was intended for his eyes only.

It does make you wonder how much bandwidth is wasted everyday in e-mails encouraging people to buy Viagra. I keep two email accounts, a serious one I use for business and important messages, a second one that all my friends and family have (which receives all the dumb "Forward this to ten friends and get your wish e-mails). You're best to surf with a mac or linux [Big Grin]
