I have an upcoming flight to New York booked through Delta and after looking at my itinerary, I notice that all flights, including connecting flights are being operated by other carriers - none of which being operated by Delta. Why do airlines do that? Is Delta really hurting that bad? Just curious.

They want you to miss your interconnecting flight, that's all.

Probably Delta Connection carriers - small regional airlines flying the Delta flag.
And yes, the more connections you have, the more chances you have to miss...
