This is posted because like him or not he probably prevented the loss of the Loews 175th Street in NYC. He had been in L.A. since a stroke in '07.

Rev. Ike was a mainstay on the Tijuana radio station XERB during the early 70s, possibly late 60s. Same time that Wolfman Jack hit it big on that station. "The Mighty 1090". That was when XERB was rumored to be broadcasting with 100,000 Watts, while of course its US counterparts were limited to 50,000 Watts. I remember being fascinated with his show as a kid, and one time as a joke my friend and I decided to write in and ask for the free "Prayer Cloth" that Rev. Ike offered his listeners. Of course it was a gimmick for them to get your address so they could solicit donations from you; whatever. Anyway the prayer cloth I got (a red square of cloth about 2" x 2") must have been defective since it didn't make me wealthy or stop me from a life of sin. [Razz]

Actually I think their transmitter was at Rosarita Beach. The 100,000 Watt thing is anecdotal but I know the station was very powerful. Googling suggests XERB was at least 250,000 Watts.

I grew up on the east coast and did a lot of shortwave
& AM DX listening back then. (Late 60's early 70's)
and I can remember hearing Rev Ike back then from my
listening post on Long Island.

XERB came in pretty well, as I recall, but then again I
also had a pretty good longwire antenna set up.

I was surprised when I heard on the news that he'd died.

I assumed "that ship had sailed" a long time ago.
