As a whole, which is better? None of this "Well... it depends on the particular cake or pie" nonsense. We really need to reach a proper conclusion to this controversial issue ASAP.

Every member who is registered must answer this question here in order to stay registered.

The choice is tough for me. But I think I will choose pie because there are more varieties that I like than types of cake.

Tally so far:

Cake = 0
Pie = 1

(I will attempt to keep this updated unless I get lazy or something).

Pie, although I will never refuse cake. My favorite is chicken pot pie. Oh wait, I bet you mean like dessert pies. OK, well then my favorite pies are pumpkin with whipped cream, lemon meringue (sp?) (must be very tart), chocolate cream, apple warmed up & a la mode. Or most any pie, but not mincemeat. Who the hell invented mincemeat pie anyway? That's not pie, it's something else, not sure what, but not pie. Also not crazy about rhubard pie but I'll eat it.

Cake is better for me, because there are hardly any cakes I won't eat (as long as they don't have excessive amounts of chunks of non-cake stuff, like fruit, in them).

Pie is good but there's really only about 4 kinds I like; the rest are OK for throwing at people, but I would rather not eat them.

Having said that: My mom's apple pie is one of the best things on this or any other planet.

What about cheesecake? Cheesecake is not pie, but it is not, strictly speaking, cake either. Also, to be served properly, it must be cut with a piece of wet monofilament fishing line. No shit! There's actually a place in San Francisco (Zanze's) that includes a piece of Stren® with every order. Plus, it lasts in the freezer for, like, ever. My g.f. and I split a piece of Key Lime cheesecake at The Cheesecake Factory Sunday night that was so good, I ran out into the parking lot and yelled about it. So if any of you were over at Smith-Haven Mall the other night, that was me.

So my vote is for cheesecake, unless its uniqueness among desserts disqualifies it, whereupon it's pie. Although, frankly, I'm going thru a big cupcake thing right now.

I would say cake. Chocolate is a major favorite. Although if Joe sends me a really nice pecan pie, I might change my vote. With some ice cream on the side, please.

I like cake, but most cake is simply a delivery system for frosting (kind of like how most potato chips are a delivery system for salt).

I'm firmly in the pie camp on this one. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I play for the other team, especially for a tasty carrot cake, but afterward, I always come home to sweet sweet cherry and rhubarb pie. Unfortunately, I've been in quite a drought recently due to the lack of high quality pies that I've had the opportunity to take home with me. I have pretty high standards, but it often seems to me that all the best pies are taken. The worst part is, I doubt that he could ever appreciate that pie as much as I do.

Well I can't keep tally on the votes because I forgot about the limited window for editing posts, but whatever. Everyone still MUST reply.

I forgot to mention that icing can make or break a cake. If a cake has awesome (and appropriate) icing, I absolutely love it, but that seems so rare these days. I guess I am not eating the right cakes. Pie crust doesn't seem to have as much impact on the actual pie.

Aside from that, cherry and pumpkin pie are my other favorites. Cake is usually too, well, "cakey" and dry for me, although German Chocolate is da bomb.

Good question.

Doesn't an ice cream "cake" have actual cake in it too? Ice cream on top. Cake on the bottom? If it does, then it's cake. If it doesn't, we'll probably have to go to the Commissioner on this question.

Dairy Queen ice cream cakes are all ice cream -- with icing on top. MMMMMMMM good! But they'll put in stuff like cookie chunks and so on with the ice cream.

I hate it when desserts are too sweet or rich. Restaurants seem to be competing to see how many different kinds of chocolate they can put in, on, or under a cake. I can only eat a few bites and I'm just too sweet for my own good.

It depends on who is making in and what kind it is. A friend of the family makes a killer pineapple upside down cake, and another makes an amazing carrot cake.

My mother in-law makes the best lemon marangue and my mother makes the best Pecan pie, but give me a slice of blue berry or huckleberry anytime with a big dab of cool whip on top.

But I can't really have any of that due to my diabetis and chron's disease. You guys suck for making me so hungry for the crap I can't have. Why not just offer my 2 year old a beer?

What about egg whites?

For the diabetes, do you use fructose or Splenda? Or, do you just avoid sugar and starch?

Plastic shovel as a kid? No, of course not. As I said, she leaves the bakery empty. Her method, beside the bowl and potato masher, involves using just her hands.

I am hypoglycemic--I have a general understanding of diabetes as well. There are tons of pies that require absolutely no sugar. Not to turn this into a cooking forum, but pie crust, tons of cut up granny smith apples and a bunch of splenda on top makes for an amazing pie. You can't even taste that it is slightly healthy!

Granny smith apples even help to control blood sugar!

We used to have a bakery here in town, the Sunrise Bakery. I used to go there after school and buy raised donuts -- glazed and sugared, cooked in lard, for 6 cents each. The bakery eventually closed when the owner retired. The only better donuts I ever tasted were my grandma's cake donuts, and my Aunt Gardie's spud nuts. Krispy Kremes? They're just pretenders.

Our local grocery store makes awesome cupcakes with about a two-inch pyramid of light frosting on top; you can gulp a mouthful of the frosting and still have plenty left on top of the cupcake.

CAKE over pies. I like Chocolate mousse pies , but then I like Choc Mousse cakes too. Apple Pies , if made fresh. Pumpkin Pies, I love.

I love food, but my issue really is food all together. With the Chrones I have to stay away from fresh fruit and vegitables, all dairy, high fiber, nuts and seeds and anything very spicy. As well as coffee.

For the type 2 Diabetis it needs to be diet controled because the available meds are hard on the gut and other parts of the digestive system but I already have enough problems with that due to the Chrones. So I also avoid sweets and starches / carbs.

I'm pretty hard to cook for and when I visited a diatition her eyes got really big when she saw my issues and restrictions and asked me to give her a few weeks, which made me laugh.

I have recently quit drinking soda havn't had popcorn in years, so that makes break time at the theatre alot of fun.

But in the words of Tony Montana "everyday above ground is a good day"

So I guess I will have to go hang out with Booger and have the Hair Pie as well.
