Public Enemies - I really wanted to love this movie, but there was just something missing.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Worst of 2009
Land of the Lost - Hands down the worst (granted, I missed Year One); I really wish Will Farrell would go away.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - someone should have reigned in Michael Bay's leash and kept the run time down. Plus it needed more story.

To me, for a film to be really great, it has to be good enough to see more than once. I have to come out of it wanting to see it again.

I did not see a single new release in 2009 that I cared to see again. "Up" came closest, but fell apart when the old man turned into Jason Bourne in the 3rd act.

The best films I saw in on the big screen in 2009 were all re-issues or "flashbacks:" Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, The Princess Bride, and The Dark Knight (January Imax re-issue).

Toy Story 3 might be the only new film I see in 2010.

Star Trek eventually grew on me.

Decent movies of 2009:
Inglorious Bastards was entertaining, but I have no desire to see it again because it felt like waaaay too long. In fact, I started watching it on opening weekend and I am STILL watching the pub scene now. That's how long that boring-ass scene is. It will never, ever ever end.
Zombieland was good and I'd like to see it again, but only once more. Not worth purchasing.
Avatar was OK, but it was really preachy. People have told me that it made them feel ashamed to be human. That kind of makes me want to hate the movie a little.

2009 sure was a shitty year for movies.

It should make you want to hate them much more than the movie itself. In fact, you should at least give the movie credit for bringing out those people's inner-stupidity. [Wink]

I can't figure out what people don't see in that movie. So far, the only other person I know of who's put it on his list is Tarantino.

Because you were the only one who put Observe and Report on his list. I watched much of that movie at my theater and it wasn't funny or even interesting. I wanted the main character, played by Seth Green or whoever he is, to die immediately. The joke of a mall cop taking his job too seriously got old before Paul Blart even came out.

As for Tom, he doesn't have a member picture so those types of posts are easier to accidentally skim past without really reading.

I only bothered with 35 movies (some of us actually have to PAY for tickets, you know), so I'll narrow my list to 3.5 titles...

1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
2. Star Trek
3. Fantastic Mr. Fox
3.5 Inglouriou...

I didn't give a higher rating than three stars (out of four) to any movie this year, and the overall average rating I gave was 2.47.

My pick for worst of the year was Orphan, but I wasn't dumb enough to see Observe & Report, Transformers 2, GI Joe, or 2012.

I give equally very high ratings to Star Trek and Inglourious Basterds. Both of which I watched on Blue-ray this week and enjoyed them just as much as I did the first time.

Down just a notch but still very good for me were Up and The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Nothing else stands out in what's left of my mind.

Oh yeah, I'm one of the few who liked Pirate Radio.

The idea of a mall cop taking himself too seriously is funny. But that is merely the hook of OBSERVE AND REPORT. What makes it work so well is that it's the story of a dreamer who reaches his full potential. You know, like in ROCKY or 8 MILE. The difference, of course, is that his dreams are extraordinarily disturbed. That's where the humor comes from, not the mall cop bit. This is an inspirational movie. And yet it makes you feel guilty about feeling inspired. That's a really interesting idea, and it's very well executed.

Mike - I just wanted him to die. His character was awful and not the least bit enjoyable. And he likes date rape. Only people who like and condone date rape enjoy this movie.

I was wondering if people would notice that. As far as I'm concerned, 17 Again was as good as Big. So yeah, I liked it.

But you should get shit for Observe and Report. Even if you ignore the date rape (how can you ignore the date rape??) it's still an unfunny and deeply disturbing film.

Joe, using that rationale, THE GODFATHER would be one of the worst movies of all-time.

Tom, I didn't mean to give you crap about 17 AGAIN. It just happened to be the easiest target in the thread.

As for OBSERVE AND REPORT, it is funny. But even if it weren't, it would still be a good movie. And the fact that you found it to be deeply disturbing is a good thing. It's supposed to be deeply disturbing.

I just watched Invictus. It shoots up to about #4 on my list for 2009. Fantastic movie with great acting.

When I first had to pay for a ticket, I quit going to movies. After 20+ years of free movies and free concessions, I about shit my pants when I had to pay for tickets and buy coke and popcorn. $12 for an adult ticket to see a fucking animated chipmunk???? Needless to say, I just dropped off the kids and handed them a hundred and said "have fun"
