The Walt Disney Company has announced the closure of Miramax. They closed the New York and Los Angeles offices as of today.

Miramax was 31 years old at it's passing.

Don't be too sure. The Weinsteins are said to be trying to buy the name back from Disney, since it has such a strong emotional tie to them. The feeling on the industry gossip sites seems to be that they have a good chance of doing it. Everything I've ever heard about these two is that they are arrogant schmucks, but if I had named a company after my parents, and then lost it, I'd sure want it back again.

So, who owns the Miramax catalog now?

There would be something strangely odd if it turns out that one would need to call Disney in order to book a screening of Pulp Fiction.

Kind of ironic. It's only in the last couple of years Miramax had an opening studio logo that didn't make me want to vomit. That last one (which can be seen on the Sin City Blu-ray) was really nice.

Disney owns the brand name & catalog for now.

Summit Entertainment is interested in it for the catalog.
