Aside from the fact that this thread and the picture page itself will immediately become obsolete the second any change to the room is made, I thought I'd make a thread dedicated to discussion of this fabulous new room built by our own Josh and Danny for our pal Brad.

Here are the pics!
(Yes, the classic view. Thumbnail view is for hobos. Give it time to load if you are still in the 90's.)

This room really looks very professional. The booth itself is freakin' awesome! I love how much space there is in there. The old room was pretty cramped, but workable. I can imagine sleeping bags and tents set up in this booth. The super-delay for the cues is interesting I suppose. I bet rewinding that film cleaner is lots of fun. You forgot to show pictures of the A-frame ladder that is required to do that.

The auditorium itself looks awesome, though I have always been far more partial to the stylings of the JBL surrounds over the blocky-looking QSCs. The seats are uber-stylish. They kind of remind me of the "premium" seating at Hollywood theaters. The screen seems perhaps a bit small, but I will assume that the masking on the bottom was all the way up and the actual space for flat and scope are bigger. I honestly feel that there should be a monkey trapped in a hanging cage somewhere in there for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Or at least one in the booth. I love monkeys!

The pics give Plano, TX as the location. Did Brad move from Rockwall?

Is any sort of F-T get-together planned for screening a movie or two?

He did move away from Rockwall because there was no Radio Shack there. Who wouldn't?

Question: Why does digital cinema require a larger port window?

Posted by John Wilson (Member # 269) on 02-01-2010, 01:15 AM:

Not sure what 3D Brad's using, but our Real D needs a pretty big port too as one image is above the other.

Love the cinema now. Well done you guys. [thumbsup]

PS: Joe, you do know you're not supposed to comment on pictures, right? What the hell's wrong with you? [Wink]

What does the CP500 do for magnetic soundtracks that the CP650 does not?

He'll like that NEC-1600C unit with the option of using from 2k to 4k bulbs in that thing. Easy unit to work on - back end opens up for the bulb change which takes seconds to do - just the time needed to calibrate and focus the bulb in for maximum brightness is needed. Side panels opens up for the light engine and filter changeouts are a snap to do.

He'll prob bug Tim Reed to come over and help Brad on how to play with it since Tim has the NEC Commander Software to hone that thing in to sharpness..

Prob the reason for the larger window if he uses REAL-D's XL polarizer defuser - a twin reflective panel, high light output polarizer defuser which sits out in front of the main lens..and you need port window space for that attachment. Even if he went with the standard defuser, still, you need some space. Also, having bigger windows so you can see out better...

I also notice on the penthouse stack - when we had SDDS,basement reader SRD and DTS, it seems that the appropriate is to have the DTS being the lowest reader, Yet, looks odd that way with "Atlas" holding up the "heavies" above him.

...Ah..but shame --- Flat lens in the window sill...

Brad is getting into the Digital take over realm. Shame on you.
The screen is white so I doubt RealD is being used.
All in all a well nice layed out booth. [thumbsup]

Hmmm, an odd amount of confusion. Perhaps I raced through the captioning too fast.

Question: Why does digital cinema require a larger port window?
It doesn't. The captions never said larger, however adding a 3rd projector does mean more (quantity).

I am not using 3D, but if I did it would be Dolby.

Format 43.

Not really. It is nowhere close to the quality of a Christie in my book. It is just temporary to evaluate it. You need to work with a Christie before you tout how wonderful you think the NEC is.

quote: Demetris Thoupis
Le an Re channel are removed
Nobody uses them anymore. Its essentially a dead format.

Look at the pictures of the screen and masking going up. There are QSC 21" units on the floor. -

No worries, there is room for the monkey cage behind the sound rack.

For some odd reason he first thing that comes to mind after seeing those pics is a clip from "dude, where's my car". Phrases "Sweet!" and "dude!" keep bouncing back and forth here. Maybe it's just the mention of the monkey. (wanna borrow my four-year-old? Fits the part)

All in all; Sweet! Especially the space in the booth. Ideal work conditions...

Look for a Panastereo CSP4600. That would be a better 70mm processor in your case. It can have on-board preamps for 35 and 70mm mag, it will process format 40, 41, 42, 43, and the 35 mags (with 12KHz switching) and also do a downmix of 5-screen channels to 3. It would be an ideal compliment to your system as you have laid it out. The only thing that would need to be modded is the changeover since it operates serially..I would probably use a contact closer to serial interface for that though.

Of course, there is no 70mm processor like the CP200, if you have 5 screen channels.

With your SDDS, I'm surprised you don't have any 8-channel prints...I would have done 5-screen channels in a room like this...also for any 4:3 stereo stuff when you get video up and going (or the odd 1.33 stereo movie like Wizard of Oz).

Nice Job overall...very impressive.

The WD40 is a great addition to the booth. All booths need one.

Posted by Steve Guttag (Member # 268) on 02-02-2010, 05:45 AM:

Yeah, the scary thing is that he replaced the Raid can with WD40...I wonder if he is trying to control his pests with WD40 now...or perhaps the problem was crickets and instead of killing them...lubricating them stops the annoying chirps!

An annoying "feature" of the CP650 is that once you put in the Cat 790, 791, 778 to deal with DCinema or other AES audio...you get EX for the ride, whether you want it or not! You HAVE to rewire the surrounds (use the Option I/O). And if you don't choose to wire it in EX fashion, then you need to carefully balance out your system to the right levels...an EX enabled CP650 presumes the rear channels are there when you are calibrating your 82dBc per channel...if you don't compensate for that, your surrounds will play low and if you get an EX film...and sound is panned to the rear, you get nothing. I'm surprised that Odyssey Products on one of their 10-billion CP650 breakout boards hasn't come up with a passive solution (resistively combine Ls/BLs and likewise for Rs/BRs so negate this. I'm even MORE surprised one can just tell the CP650 in a set up screen...configure the outputs for just 5.1 That would be just too easy for someone!

Phil needs to call Danny and Josh to complete the room for him.

Steve, I don't have those cards you mention, but I can turn EX on and off in my CP650's. With it off it all seems to set up fine. There is no adjustment in the menu for the levels of the back surrounds (unless it is presuming I am doing it at the amp level). Adding these cards forces the EX option to remain on?

Posted by Steve Guttag (Member # 268) on 02-02-2010, 12:06 PM:

No, you can tell the CP650 to not auto-EX but it presumes you have the rear speakers.

Thus, if you set up your surrounds to the prescribed 82dBc/side...when you play the film in format 10 (non-EX)...the actual level will be closer to 79-80dBc/side since it presumes that the rear channels would have brought it back up to 82dBc.

I am suprised no one has mentioned the AWESOMENESS of the "Seeburg Background Music System" yet! Awesomeness!
I am more impressed by this device than any other in the system or for that matter the whole system combined!

Seriously Brad, Where in the world did you find this thing? From reading about it on the inter tubes (see link above) I learned that it was a competitor to Muzak but instead of source material being piped from telco lines they sent you thier own cartridges or records or something?

Tell us more Brad! Tell us More!

It is indeed awesome. I had never seen anything like it. There are styli on the top and bottom of the tone arm. It plays tracking above or below. The fidelity in the screening room was quite good.

The Durra is a magic wall. It looks like bits of sawdust glued together, but it just works. There is a furring channel (cavity) between the sheetrock and the Durra. This permits the sheetrock to shake before the sound hits the Durra. I stood about 20 feet away from the front exit door with a movie running extremely loud and passing traffic made much more noise than the leakage from the room. Check it out. Its good stuff.

Its called the Basis and that issue is resolved internally.

I am suprised no one has mentioned the AWESOMENESS of the "Seeburg Background Music System" yet!
Yes, awesomeness abound! I believe this was a 1960'ish machine and Seeburg was the company that created background music. Muzak took over the market in the 70s and turned it into godawful elevator music, but the Seeburg stuff is awesome.

My machine has been modified to have a plexiglass cover, a mirrored background and of course, rope lights so you can see the awesomeness of the mechanism itself. There are a few more things to do to it, but it is pretty impressive as it stands. The content on the records is just as awesome as the machine.

The machine holds 25 or so special records on it and will play for something like 40 hours before it resets the stack.

Here are some youtube videos of other people's Seeburg machines in action:

This one shows resetting the "stack" (but they only had one record on the machine).

This one shows a fully loaded Seeburg machine.

Some music.....

Those Seeburg vinyls .. do they spin at 16-2/3rpm? If I remember, they're 10inch vinyls with a inch and a half hole in the middle ... very propriatory for just one usage.

I used to see these vinyls in thrift stores many moons ago..

Still, quite the unit in itself.. great music from MUZAK .. your classic "elevator music."

I want to say that the Seeburg music system looks really cool and I love the types of music it plays linked to on the Youtube vids, etc... but with the crowd that roams here I can see this thread turning into a Seeburg discussion thread vs a screening room discussion.

Damn good thing you didn't have a train replica or something in there. [Smile]

Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 02-03-2010, 01:58 AM:

Yes they are 16 2/3RPM and yes they have an oddly large center hole. The reason for this was because Seeburg didn't want the records "out". They charged a penalty if the records were not returned at the end of the quarterly usage interval, although like anything tons got into private hands.

I plan on recording these to CDs for archive when I get a bit of time.

Brad, are the discs you have currently loaded in the machine your only collection or do you have more records? Packs of discs seem to be pretty common on ebay.

Posted by Joe Redifer (Member # 3) on 02-03-2010, 12:01 PM:

So did anyone besides me notice that not only are the media pads on the film cleaners on both projectors freshly soaked, but the one on the platter as well? Always ready to go! I also noted that the winding of the pads was consistent with the diagram on the cleaners themselves. I think the last time that was done was for the Filmguard product shoot. [Smile]

Speaking of which, how rare are the 70mm pads becoming?

Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 02-03-2010, 12:05 PM:

I have brand new packs of records, but I am not going to open them until we finish the rebuild on the Seeburg.

Joe, I don't normally load the media that way as you know, but the media in here is never reused since it is rare to run the same print twice in a row so it doesn't much matter and after all, it was picture time.

Posted by Joe Redifer (Member # 3) on 02-03-2010, 12:30 PM:

Yeah I figured. [Smile] But you missed my last question. Have you ever had a roll of media slit nearly twice as wide just to have plenty of 70mm media for the future? Or does Kelmar still stock the stuff?

I've seen a few movies in the former FT screening room in Rockwall (yeah, I'd buy it if I had the bucks -but I have other problems bleeding my money currently). Lots of fun there. It's the only movie theater I've visited where the sub-bass actually generated real wind in the room.

Hope to check out a show at the new one in Plano.

Wow, it's great. I remember I was so amazed when I saw the first screening room some time ago, I can't believe you managed to make a better one!

I beg your pardon for my curiosity but I have some questions! How did you design the acoustic of the room? Any special dimensions, like a special ratio between width, lenght and height?
What DCA amps are they? How are they connected to the speakers?
You use a D2 if I'm not mistaken. Any chance to see some screenshots of the response, before and after EQ? And the reverberation time figure?

Our student film society is showing "The Big Lebowski" (sp?) so we decided to hook up a Nintendo Wi (sp?) on the stage connected to the DLP and PA system so we can have a Wi bowling competition on the BIG screen! [Big Grin] Should be a lot of fun! [beer]

Doesn't the image get delayed by a frame or two when it gets scaled for the video projector? If so, then video games would really suck on it.

Yeah, you'd never expect a guy in charge of projection for a chain of dinner theaters to exclude a popcorn machine in his screening room. [Wink]

Ear plugs won't help when your innards are being rearranged. [Big Grin]

Years ago I got to listen to the U-571 depth charge sequence at the Hitchcock mixdown stage on the Universal lot. It was a mid-sized room, equipped with eight heavily reworked Sensurround cabinets for the subs. That was bass you felt more than you heard. The room could be tuned down to 10Hz (though it wasn't). I imagine Brad's new room easily moves innards.

Mmmmmm hot buttered popcorn...

Where is the lazy usher? Where is the Coke stain on the screen? Where are the popcorn dribblings on the ground? Where is the gum on the seats? Sounds to me like this room just doesn't cut it!

Three reasons why Nintendo Wii isn't good for the big screen:
1. Even if you purchase the component output cable it will only spit out 480p (it's very soft too and the aspect ratio isn't quite 16x9)
2. That stupid sensor bar isn't meant for a large screen. Even in my home projecting 90" it's difficult. the bar must be below or above the screen, but you need to point directly at the bar to have your cursor in the middle of the screen. This is awkard with a large screen with the bar as you need to point really low to control the middle of the screen.
3. the 480p is a real drag (I thought i'd just mention this twice to be clear).

Useless FYI: Golden Eye on the N64 does have a menu option for stretching the picture so you can play it 16x9... but it's stretched 480i.

Posted by Joe Redifer (Member # 3) on 02-08-2010, 12:34 AM:

Goldeneye on the N64 is only 240p, not even 480i. It looks like ass, and not just because it is 240p, but because of all of the nasty blur filters and drab colors. The N64 has to have had some of the worst graphics ever in all of videogame history. The console's graphics literally makes me want to vomit.

For the Wii, you could make homemade sensors. Just put two IR emitters behind the screen a little closer together than the optional SDDS stage channels would have gone, midway up the screen.

Some of the most fun I've had playing video games, was on some of the older systems.
Intellivision - Astrosmash
Colecovision - Q*Bert, Mr. Do!, Donkey Kong, and a few others.
NES - Dr. Mario, Arkanoid, The Legend of Zelda, Tetris, Dragon Warrior, and so on, and so forth.

I have no idea what the specs are for the video projector that is in the auditorium where I work. The projector not very large, and is mounted to the ceiling. We use it for our pre-show ads (all local), rentals, and special events.
Sometimes with the rentals, rather than bringing in a vhs, dvd, or blue-ray of their choosing to watch, instead they'll show up with a video game system & games. While I'm sure there is some tiny bit of lag in the whole set-up, I haven't heard any bitching about it from the customers!

Scott,

When we plug in laptops DVI thrua DVI to SDI converter there is no delay... You move the mouse and it moves on screen.

Jarett,

We have all neccesary cables. This house has a large stage in front of the screen so the bowlers are going to be standing on the stage right in front of the screen. We also have the capability to upconvert the 480p into a true HD format for projection.

The other thing to keep in mind here is we are not using just any run of the mill wimpy video projector. We are using the full boat here a NEC1600 DLP. I'm tellin' ya' you hook up a macbook to this thing via it's DVI output and it looks better blown up to a 1920X920 (or whatever) resolution on the "big screen" than it does on it's own display!

Hey if it doesnt work, or doesnt look good we will scrap it. We havent publicized it for this reason but if it works the "kids" think it will be a fun way to add that little somthing "extra"

The Playstation Store has a down-loadable version of Q*bert for Playstation 3. It's a very accurate re-creation of the coin-op game. Same graphics. Same sound effects. The only thing missing is the mechanism that would hammer the bottom of the video game cabinet when the snake or Q*bert himself would fall off the pyramid. I think the game costs only $5.

The first time I witnessed a Wii in action, it was on-screen where I work. Working fine, and the folks that rented the place that morning had a blast.

I was a little jealous.
Still am, in a way. I have yet to play any video games on the big screen.

$5 is cheap enough for a game download, but I'm not inclined to drop a bunch of $$$ for a PS3. I've been a Nintendo fan for a long time, and own working NES, SNES, N64, and GameCube consoles. [thumbsup]
I share a Wii with my siblings. [Roll Eyes]
Lots of great titles are available to download to that system. [Big Grin]

What's up with that Pac-Man game in the screening room? Only one ghost, pellets missing but no score! [Confused]

Nope Steve... you're missing the whole point of Brad building this room. Its now NWVB Certified at Mach 2. The NWVB is the "National Wind Velocity Board".

Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 02-10-2010, 12:26 PM:

The side masking pulls in way farther than it needs to and the lower masking can go way higher than it needs to as well. 3:4 is easily achieved.

Posted by Joe Redifer (Member # 3) on 02-10-2010, 01:09 PM:

Then I don't see why you guys resorted to playing 4:3 Atari 2600 Pac-Man when you could have hooked up the arcade machine and played 3:4 Pac-Man. Maybe it's because the digital video projector can't rotate the image 90 degrees? And don't try to tell me that picture is Photoshopped because I know you play games and watch Superbowls on it every day.

Posted by Steve Guttag (Member # 268) on 02-10-2010, 02:50 PM:

I'd still prefer Joe's screening room. Just look at the pictures...everyone seems bored in Brad's....while Joe seems rather excited and happy to see movies in his room. His screen also formats 4:3 correctly and seems to make Scope even wider (or less tall). Clearly features that Brad's room seem incapable of (based on photo evidence). I also don't see how Brad's room can compare to Joe's sonically either.

Nope, sorry guys...Brad's room is clearly a poor-man's attempt at trying to approach Joe's level but so poorly executed that there is virtually no resemblance.

Steve

Namco Classics for Playstation 3 features authentic 3:4 ratio versions of Pac Man, Dig Dug, Xevious and Galaga. The games are window-boxed in a 16 X 9 frame (lots and lots of dead space to the left and right). Movable masking might help those games look better on screen.

Then that makes three of us. I played little league baseball and I like to play sports sometimes, but I cannot stand to watch it or discuss it. I did force myself to watch the Super Bowl this year only to see the commercials which ended up being a total waste of time since they all sucked beyond belief.

My wife has one couple as friends that we went to dinner with once. The guy kept getting up to go watch the games in the bar and kept checking his phone for scores. Are you kidding me?! Seriously dude, you have a sports addiction. If you cannot even go to dinner without needing to check the scores, then you have a problem. It wasn't even a big game weekend. When we get together my wife talks with his wife and he and I don't talk. He just watches a game on TV which is an insult because he can't even tear him self away when they have people over to visit. He figured out early on that I don't give a rip about sports so he doesn't even try to hold a conversation with me anymore. At least I have tried to talk about sports to try and meet him on his level.

I guess this is a sore spot for me. I don't really care what someone enjoys nor do I fault them for it. If their hobby makes them happy, great! I have become jaded about sports because I have been in so many situations where the other guys are talking sports and if you don't know about sports, then you are basically on the outside. In these cases, I usually can't even keep up with their conversations nor do I care to try. I usually end up talking with the ladies since at least they can talk about plenty of other topics. It just annoys me that many guys can't even carry on a conversation if it doesn't include some player's stats. [Roll Eyes] It used to make me wonder what was wrong with me or made me feel like less of a man. It's good to know there are others out there like me.

I seem to know a lot of guys that neglect their wives and families for sports and video games. I like to play video games but I grow tired of them pretty quickly. I haven't bought a new video game system since the Sega Genesis because I don't want to get sucked into it since I already have plenty of other things competing for my time. I think my wife is also scared that I will be like so many of the other guys that we know that become mesmerized by their video games and have no idea what is going on around them as life passes them by.

My 21 month old son has loved basketball since he was able to crawl. He has several hoops around the house and he shoots all day long. We thought it might be a phase but our pediatrician (who is a self proclaimed nerd and has been on CNN and written several books about raising children, which I only bring up to establish his credibility and experience) is fascinated by Will's basketball obsession. He said he has never seen that in a child before and is interested to see how it plays out. My wife played college basketball but neither of us ever pushed it on our son. He played with a basketball at someone's house and he was hooked after that. We cannot even go to Sam's Club or Dick's Sporting Goods because if he sees the basketball hoops sticking up ten aisles over, he runs straight for them and throws a fit if we try to pull him away. I asked my wife to buy me a "Basketball for Dummies" book for Christmas. I guess I will need to find some level of sports knowledge that I am comfortable with so I can support my son in his interests when he gets older. My dad is like me and has no interest in sports. We are both mechanical fix it type of guys. He loves woodworking and I love metalworking but neither of us likes sports.

Steve... At least in Joe's screening room you'd be leaving after the film with your haircut still intact!

Josh,

I with you and Brad! I like sports but hate watching it on TV. I do watch the occasional golf tournament... perhaps two or three a year, but thats it. TV Sports is a total waste of time. I didn't even watch the Stupid Bowl nor do I care who won. My wife and I went to her daughters where they could also give a crap about sports on TV and we enjoyed a great dinner and Birthday party. Her daughter and boyfriend don't even own a tv.
