Rue McClanahan died Thursday at age 76, that leaves Betty White the only surviving "Golden Girl".

Very sad news.
So much for the rule of three...way too many celebs have died this year so far..and we're just halfway through the year.
I am calling this the year of death.

Rue McClanahan was born in a small town near Ardmore, Oklahoma and not far from Lake Texhoma (in the south-central part of the state). I'm mentioning that because her "southern accent" was naturally more authentic than what the vast majority of actors can manage. I've heard European actors imitate American accents more successfully than non-southern Americans imitating southern accents.

Or perhaps the definition of "celebrity" has been loosened to the point of absurdity.

Rue McClanahan was a fine celebrity who worked for many, many years. We worked with her in 1997 and she was lovely. We worked with Betty White about 5 years ago and she was a scream (in a good way, of course).

When she co-starred with Bea Arthur on "Maude." I had never seen her before. She was so fun as Vivian always playing the foil to Maude's schemes.
Later, on Mama's Family, I felt that she was wasted. Vicki Lawrence was the star.
Her saucy character of Blanche Devereau on The Golden Girls brought her back to the top. I made time to catch all these shows first-run on NBC, which was rough, as I was working in TV, and working at a drive-in, when it started in the early 1980's.
She was an original.
