Even though it came out in the US this week 30 years ago (July 25) I first ran (and saw) 'Caddyshack' January 21st, 1981. Amazingly, along with 'The Blues Brothers' in my home town of Mackay, it first showed up as a supporting feature in a double bill at the Westline Drive-In. In this case it supported Jackie Chan's American debut film 'The Big Brawl'.

Opening night (a Wednesday) we had over 120 cars so we knew it was to be a big week. When I opened up on the Warner Bros title and the song started up...then the dirt being dispersed to have a puppet gopher pop out of the ground and make sounds like Flipper, I knew I was going to enjoy this movie. Friday and Saturday nights topped 300 cars each night (around 1000 people per night). Mackay was only a town of 50,000.

When I worked at the TV station, I took home a brand new 16mm print of it before it was telecast and ran it in my little home 'Paramount Cinema' under the guise I should look at it to make a promo for its upcoming telecast. (It really wasn't necessary...I could already quote most of the movie word for word [Wink]

Although it got and still gets marginal reviews, it's shown on TV as often as KELLY'S HEROS and still makes me laugh repeatedly. It certainly is an example of something being much more than the sum of its parts (although its "parts" are pretty good too.) Anybody for a Baby Ruth candy bar?

Harold Ramis has noted that Caddyshack's rating that publications like TV Guide use has risen over the years. Used to be like 2 stars, now usually gets 3+.

Rodney Dangerfield supposedly showed up for work on the set of Caddyshack having no idea what to do, that being his first film. I guess he figured it out real quick.

Caddyshack had an almost endless supply of great quotes and one-liner jokes.

"Hey, doll. Could you scare up another round for our table over here? And tell the cook this is low grade dog food. I've had better food at the ballgame, you know? This steak still has marks from where the jockey was hitting it!"

"You're rather attractive for a beautiful girl with a great body."

"Elihu, will you come loofah my stretch marks?"

"Pick up that blood!"

"Oh, this is the worst looking hat I ever saw. What, when you buy a hat like this I bet you get a free bowl of soup, huh? (looks at Judge Smails who is wearing the same hat) Oh, it looks good on you though."

"Hey Whitey, where's your hat?"
