It is with great sadness that I must inform friends that Phil passed away at his home in LA.
His sister called me this morning to share the tragic news.

What??? A very tragic loss. While I only met Phil a few times at various trade shows, we became very good friends with the help of this site. I don't know how many times we have chatted here, and ganged up on people in different threads. Rest in peace buddy, Rick

Although I never met Phil, over the last ten years we've shared hundreds of emails and posts that seemed to tweak our sensibilities in similar ways. I loved his outrageous sense of humor and his cynical, yet humorous, way of looking at things.

Even now I'm hoping that this is just another of Phil's pranks and he'll pop up soon with a gorilla or pirate mask laughing at us all. I'd hoped to meet him face to face sometime, although now it appears that will have to be in another world.

How sad to hear this news.

Phil and I are graduates of Lawrence Institute of Technology in Detroit. Over the years we had similar interests, working with television and doing underwater photography.

His humor was a bit slanted, much like his pirate hat.

I am utterly shocked and saddened by this news. Phil was a great guy and loved to "pull my chain" both here on F-T and by private emails. He was always kind and expressed his concerns over my health issues without any mention of his own.

I regret never having the chance to meet him in person, as I feel it would have been interesting to say the least.

R.I.P. Phil, you will be sorely missed by a lot of folks.

My sincere condolences to his family and friends as well.

This comes as kind of a shock. Wow. Phil and I exchanged heated words a couple times here but we mended fences as it were and I always enjoyed reading his posts. Well almost always. He called 'em as he saw 'em.

Indeed very upsetting news. The world lost something special today. Besides his prank phone ins on my radio show over the years, we had exchanged many emails and phone calls about cinema, radio, and all sorts of things.

I'd been wondering where Phil was since he hadn't posted in a while. We often chatted online beyond exchanging posts on this forum. He was a Vietnam Vet and served in the same field as me; so there was a lot more in common beside film. I am indeed shocked. Phil will be sorely missed.

Such a loss. We spoke on the phone often. I got to meet him in Atlanta when he drove over from LA to pick up a load of equipment. I loved his sick sense of humor. What a fun man.

I'm totally speechless. I was fortunate enough to meet Phil once in person quite a number of years ago, and have kept up communication via phone and email since. I kept planning to go down for another visit and things just kept getting in the way. Now I'm really bummed. Let this be a lesson to all. Don't take life for granted. You never know what will happen tomorrow.

I loved Phil.

Hubba-hubba!

No, no -- not like THAT!

Phil was a good buddy, especially circa 2003 when I was getting desperate to return to the United States. We'd call each other DAILY and talk about the latest goings-on on Film-Tech and other stuff. We'd talk for hours. We'd literally talk until somebody's portable phone battery died. Then we'd give the phones an hour or so to recharge and pick up where we left off. It made me feel like the U.S. wasn't so far away, and I think Phil knew he was helping me cope.

Phil was not only a VERY funny guy. He could be as sentimental as the next guy, and was OFTEN moved to tears. For example, as far as I know, he never watched "Platoon" or "Saving Private Ryan." It was just too much for him. I know that Phil served in a war (Vietnam?) but he never wanted to talk about it.

When I moved to Los Angeles in 2004, I had hoped I would get to hang out with my good buddy but, alas, he finally admitted that he wasn't doing so well and didn't want me to see him in his condition. Even though he is gone, I'm still not sure if it's okay to talk openly about it, so I won't. (And, like some, I'm hoping he's alive and well and this is some kind of prank. I guess this makes Phil the "Elvis Presley" of Film-Tech.) Even so, we spoke on the phone almost every day until our schedules no longer allowed for that sort of luxury. Yes, it was a luxury to spend time on the phone yakking with Phil.

Oh, we had a few fights but we ALWAYS managed to bounce back.

I was fortunate enough to meet Phil once - at a Halloween party at Brad's house in Rockwall, TX. That's where the infamous pirate photo was taken. I think he may have been the only person to arrive in costume.

One last thing I remember about Phil -- He loved living in California -- He called it "God's Country."

So long, Phil. May you rest in peace forever in the REAL "God's Country." I will miss you.

Tentative plans include returning Phil to Fort Worth for interment however that could take upwards to a week. No plans have been set for services to my knowledge.
I'll be talking to Phil's sister sometime tomorrow and if there is any additional news I'll be sure to post.

Phil was one of a kind, that is for sure - I met him a few times at ShoWest, where he would be one of the jokesters at the F-T Drink.

From what I have seen and heard, he had an impressive film and film equipment collection as well.

Another of the 'old guard' of F-T has passed. RIP Phil.

He had a soft spot for homeless/runaway teenagers in Hollywood, California. Particularly those who were kicked out of their homes for being gay.

Geez. When I saw the title of this thread I was hoping it was just a joke made in bad taste. I had no idea Phil was not doing well. I met Phil only once, at a Film-Tech gathering Brad hosted at his house in Rockwall several years ago. Phil indeed did have a great, irreverent sense of humor. I can't remember for sure if that gathering was the one where the famous pirate photo was taken.

Phil's passing reminds me of other really great members Film-Tech has lost over the years, like Paul Thompson & John Pytlak for instance. Pretty sad.

I had always hoped to meet Phil in person at some point, but alas that just never happened. But thanks to this forum and numerous chats I felt like I had come to know the man over these last ten years. He was truly a great guy and a lot of fun to read. I felt privileged that he called me a friend.

I always wanted to make the trek to is house in California and have a wee on the front porch like several here did! (Any chance for a link to that thread?) Hopefully to even meet him in person:( I always enjoyed and will miss his discussions in the chat room.

Funny thing is I think this image was always Phil's favorite. Who else would've come to a Halloween party full of movie people dressed as a "video" pirate? (Note the camcorder in his hand.)

Then again, he did like this pic a lot too.


We offered several times to finish the install of Phil's screening room in his house at no charge since his health was up and down, but he wanted to do it all by himself. It would've been a cool setup. Unfortunately, I don't think he ever got to run a movie in it.

Phil and I swapped several e-mails last year when I sold him a new DTS reader for his screening room that I had left over after selling my DTS unit. We both lamented that our booths are not put together yet and we had so much stuff that we needed to get rid of. He was a nice guy to deal with and he will be missed.

This is indeed a huge shock. I always made it a habit to read Phil's postings here on F/T. I never met him personally, but you kind of had an inkling of the type of guy he was.

This isn't a great group photo. Phil is a bit blurry because of the longer exposure (due to low light & I didn't want to use the camera's crappy little flash). He wasn't wearing the shirt seen in the pirate photo, so obviously I wasn't around for that.

I am deeply saddened by this. When I saw the thread title I thought someone was playing a joke on Phil My condolences to his family and loved ones and he was a hell of a film-techer. I would not want to break peoples' hearts but this thread instantly reminded me of the great John Pytlak as well. Both Phil and he were so loved by the people on the industry and I trully wish they knew. I hope both of them now meet again.

A funny thing to notice about that last picture of Phil.

It's obvious that he's fucking around just to be funny and I'm sure that he was playing with expendable film. However, it's plain to see that he's still being careful to hold the film mostly by the edges... but for that section that he's licking with his tongue.

Most people wouldn't notice unless they are film people but it's clear that Phil was a real film guy.

I'm really saddened by this. It was clear to me without even having met Phil that he had a cool vibe and was one of the good ones. The world needs more good ones, not less.

There was a thread a few years back where we each responded to something the other posted. It was the only interaction we ever had but it really made me laugh.

I haven't been on Film -Tech for a while so only just heard this very sad news.
Like many here my contact with Phil was via FT postings, e-mails and the very occasional phone call. Sadly never got the chance to meet him in person.
We did butt heads a few times but always seemed to work out our differences.
I learnt a lot from him and for that will be eternally grateful.
My thoughts are with his family and those of you who were lucky enough to count him as a close friend.

There was a very nice service earlier this afternoon to remember Phil at the Mount Olivet funeral home. A few of us were able to make it. I know others wanted to, even from out of state, but the timing didn't work with such short notice. We were fortunate enough to be within driving distance. Phil's daughter, Patricia, was unable to attend, but she wrote a very touching letter that Sue (Phil's sister) read at the service.

HILL, Phillip Jerome (Phil) (65), of Los Angeles, died Friday, October 8, 2010. Born in Detroit, MI, he was a resident of Los Angeles for 34 years where he worked as a Computer Graphics Artist and was a collector of films. He will be missed by his family and friends. Graveside service: 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Fort Worth, TX. Survivors: Daughter, Patricia Dahlquist and husband, Terus; grandchildren, Kylie and Easton; mother, Dorothy Hill; sister, Sue Smith and husband, Mike and their children and other family and friends.

I wish I could think of a way to say goodbye in the spirit of Phil's often snarky and sarcastic sense of humor, but I'm still at a total loss for words. Goodbye Phil, your many friends miss you already.

Wow, just got home from work and saw this. Similar to so many others here, I never met phil, but enjoyed his Incorrigible sense of humor. Never really knew what to think.... Phil, RIP

I've been haunted by Phil lately.

One of the students here said "Can I ask you a question?" To which, I replied: "Apparently so. What's your other question?"

And then I woke up laughing this morning because in a dream I had just said that so-and-so was "madder than a wet hen."

Phil loved to say that and now it makes me think of him.

Sigh.

Every time I drive north of Atlanta through Marietta, Ga and pass the campus location of Kennesaw State University I think of Phil. It always reminds me of the day I picked him up from the Atlanta airport, drove him to pick up a rental truck and helped him load equipment he purchased from an Ebay auction to take back to his home in the Hollywood hills.
That was a good time. Then my mind goes back to that fateful day David and I arrived at our hotel in Hollywood , called Phil to confirm our plans for dinner that night. No answer on Phil's phone. I tried a dozen times that evening and again the next morning to reach Phil. A couple of hours later I received that haunting call from Phil's sister with the news of his passing.
Damn.....I miss Phil.

Chatted many times with Phil. He was a Vietnam vet like me and also worked in the same field. We had many thinks in common and he was always a great person to chat with.

Hard to believe it is approaching two years since Phil's passing. Thankfully, his spirit lives on through this forum and all the good folks here who knew him personally.

My goodness, I had no idea. Having joined shortly before his passing, I never got to interact with him but after years of reading thousands of Film-Tech posts, I felt like I knew him as well as my friends. I found myself wondering "Where is this guy now? He's an absolute hoot!" every time I saw a post of his. Unfortunately I now know why that is not possible.

Rest in Peace forevermore Phil, Film-Tech legend.

Never got to meet Phil in person, but talked to him on occasion and he was always a delightful person.

Every time this ornament surfaces around the holidays I always think of Phil. (For those who might not be aware, Phil had a working life size version of that lamp in his front window.)

I agree... He used to call me out of the blue and talk about his days at Iwerks and Panavision. His was a great guy and is sorely missed.
