First time seeing Ben-Hur was in Old Testament class freshman year in high school. We watched it on a 20" TV off of VHS. The cool thing was that the chariot race was still in scope. The screen starts to change right as the charioteers enter the circus. It was actually pretty awesome to see that happen.

Charlton Heston had a place in Northern Michigan where he spent much of his time enjoying the "out of doors".

He refused to make a personal appearance for "BEN HUR" as he said it was his least liked film.

When asked for the title of his favorite film, Heston replied, "El Cid!"

We played "Ben-Hur" at the theatre a few years ago when it was in its 35th anniversary year and got OK crowds for it. When I was a kid, I had no interest in most of the story but I remember two scenes that stood out: The chariot race and the crucifixion.

I like the way the crucifixion scene portrays the event without a lot of drama, weepy music or etc., unlike most films that depict it. It just shows it happening matter-of-factly, which is probably the way it really did happen.

"A Christmas Story" came out in the era where we didn't play movies until 2 or 3 months after the break, so we wound up playing it in February. I was against playing it at all, but we must have had an open spot on the schedule. As I remember, we didn't even have a trailer for it, so it drew lackluster crowd, but I loved the movie and still do. Brings back a lot of childhood memories. The "old man" reminds me a lot of my grandpa, and I could really relate to the little kid getting chased by bullies -- that was me in grade school.
