I was just walking down the street when I saw a friend of mine in his yard repairing his old truck.

Not being one to miss an opportunity to bug someone who's trying to get some work done, I went to ask him how it's going.

He told me that the heater in his truck quit a while back. He drove it to the city yesterday with no heater. I said, "This isn't the weather to do that." His response? "I actually solved that problem. I loaded my gasoline generator in the back of the truck and ran a cord in the window so I could plug in a hair dryer. It worked pretty well, except that if I hit a bump in the road the fail-safe in the generator caused it to stop running so I had to stop quite a few times to re-start the generator."

What an image... A guy stopped by the side of the road yanking on the starter rope of a generator so he can run a hair dryer to warm up his truck.

As opposed to how it used to be done (and I'm not joking). You would run a duct from the exhaust manifold to the firewall of the passenger compartment...better hope you don't get any exhaust leaks or your heater will kill you.

I used to work on Model-As...check out the "heater" option some time.

Now for the reverse: "REDNECK AC"

to add AC to a car that doesn't have one, or had AC that died:

To the car that doesn't have AC: Get a good sized cooler and cut a hole in the top to mount a heater core. In the cooler, add a 12v aquarium pump and hook up the water lines to the core. Add a 12v muffin fan on top of the core. Around the core, one would add a sheet of rubber material to deflect condensation back into the cooler. Full the cooler with ICE and water for the pump to circulate that ice water through the core. Fan pulls the cool air from the core to blow into the cabin.

Car with dead AC: do the same, but run the water lines through the car's evaporator core.

Years ago, my band had an out of town gig and we decided to pull the trailer with my Parent's motor home. It was a hot day, and the motor home had no generator to run the rooftop A/C. No problem. I just hoisted a 6000 watt portable generator onto the roof, strapped it down and we rode in comfort to the gig. We did get some strange looks along the way [Big Grin]

I am relieved that, after seeing the topic header, that logs and gasoline are not involved. I'm from Kentucky after all.

Monte: The ice-in-a-cooler trick is available as something to buy for your airplane if you don't have an A/C unit. Really true. Louis
