Leprosy group wants ‘Pirates’ to walk the plank

The British animator Aardman will change a scene in its upcoming film, “Pirates: Band of Misfits,” after objections from leprosy advocacy groups, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The 3D animated film voiced by the likes of Hugh Grant, Salma Hayek, Jeremy Piven and David Tennant is due in theaters April 27. The groups that came out against the scene include Lepra Health In Action and the International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations.

In the trailer the Grant-voiced Pirate Captain lands on a ship demanding gold, but is told by a crew member: “Afraid we don’t have any gold old man, this is a leper boat. See.” After issuing the explanation, the sailor’s arm drops off.

Leprosy groups expressed concern that the scene could increase the stigma and discrimination felt by people suffering from leprosy.

The filmmaker will alter the scene “out of respect and sensitivity for those who suffer from leprosy,” Aardman said in a statement.

of all negative references to leprocy from the movie "Ben Hur"

This explains why we were asked to pull the trailers on the movie. "New ones will be sent early March."

What do you mean? I heard that they already deleted one scene in the movie where the lepers were playing poker.

They ended up cutting the scene because they all threw their hands down. [Big Grin]

The word Leprosy or "Lepers" is frowned upon by the medical profession who treats the disease. The proper word is 'Hansen's Disease' named after Dr. Gerhard A Hansen.

Hawaii is very proud of a great man who came to Hawaii from Belgium as a Catholic priest to treat victims of the disease and would die from it and about a century later would become a saint. That man was Father Damien who was born with the name Joseph De Vauster. Statues of Saint Damien and King Kameahamea can be seen in the United States capitol building in Washington along with other great Americans. An exact copy of Saint Damien's statue is also at the entrance of the Hawaii state capitol in Honolulu
