Yesterday I got three movies to watch from the library (they're free). My damn blue ray player will not open and is not recognized by my receiver. It made it just past the 1 year factory warranty period. I bought it as a "throw away" item , it was under $100 and I didn't want to pay Best Buy for an extended warranty that cost more than the player.

I haven't opened it up yet to do an autopsy, but hopefully it's just something easy. I could take it and have Best Buy repair it and charge me for more than it's worth, but I'm not that attached to it, plus there might be a porn disc in there.

Looks like I'm back to DVDs for now (I have my old DVD player).

Any ideas what to look for? It powers up, but that's it. No internal noise. It's only been powered up when I watch movies or listen to music on Pandora.

If you bought it with a credit card, call your card issuer before opening up the player for an autopsy. Many AMEX / MasterCard / VISA cards either double the manufacturer's warranty or add a year to it. On an item < $100, your card issuer may just give you a refund rather than try to repair the machine.

Try unpluging it for a while. If there is a disc in the player, you may want to hit the "power" button then the eject button as soon as you plug it in. BTW, the unit is powered up all the time. That "power" button is just a "wake up" button.

Thing you have to watch out for BR's is that they're more prone for failure since the data is much closer to the surface than CD or DVD due to the much finer "pits and valleys" that BR's uses.

Thus, even light scratching can kill a BR from playing.

Check your player for firmware updates as well, but do be careful if an update is needed in following instructions to the letter. Otherwise, you got a dead "electronic brick" on your hands.
