In regard to motion picture projection only:

I know that the union is long gone from almost every location with the exception of a few major cities, but now with the advent of Digital and the final elimination of film projectors, does the union still exist (in regard to film projection)? I know the union still exists on the production side of the business, and for "live" theatre.

How about places like New York City and Massachusetts where projectionists were required to be licensed? Do these locations require a licensed projectionist to babysit the video projectors?

Just curious.

The IA has been out of theater projection here in Sin City for years, way before the digital conversion started. About the only time you'll see an IA guy in a projection booth here nowadays would be during CinemaCon at Caesars Palace - Boston Light & Sound heads that project up every year and is still a union shop.

Local 720 still exists and has contracts for stage and convention work in some of the hotels and with some of the local AV contractor companies.

The AFI/Silver runs with Union Projectionists and I think you'll find the studios still have union operators.

Local 154 Seattle merged with stage Local 15. We still have projectionists at Landmark Theatres in Seattle and the SIFF Cinema at the Uptown. The Seattle Art Museum also uses union projectionists about once a week. Also the Valley Drive In in Auburn.
