Since I'm the "last man standing" in the downtown most nights, I get to talk to 911 more than most people. I have people coming in off of the street sometimes: "Call the police/fire department/ambulance for this or that." Over the years I've had cars on fire, drunks passed out on the sidewalk, assaults, break-ins, one time I had an old lady with Alzheimer's who was sitting on the sidewalk slowly freezing to death until I went out and got her into my lobby. (I also get a lot of people asking me to call a taxi for them.)
I think I just got a new record, though: two emergency calls to the fire department within three days. One garage fire on the next street over on Friday night and just now another for what apparently turned out to be a false alarm -- a huge cloud of black smoke that I could see from my back door that I have just been informed is the result of a "controlled burn", whatever that is. A controlled burn on a Sunday night in the winter after dark. Who thought that was a good idea....

Please change the title of the thread to make sure we know you're talking about calling the emergency number.
