Not wanting to sail near political and/or religious waters, but on the subject of Shakespeare, 'Methinks he doth protest too much' came to mind when the Cardinal O'Brien story broke.

BTW, the phrase "the lady doth protest too much" (if we use the meaning of the words as Shakespeare used them) actually means "the lady vows/promises too much" and not the current usage of "declaring something to be untrue to the point that everyone suspects the opposite." Apparently, protest meant (at his time) to declare something solemnly.
