Patent for Artificial Sweetener Aspartame Verifies it is E. Coli Feces

With the patent for the very popular artificial sweetener aspartame recently being released to the public domain comes the bizarre news that it is actually “harvested” from the excrement of GM E. coli bacteria. Wait, what? What are we drinking when we decide to gulp down a soda that’s been sweetened with “artificial sweetener”? Yeah. You heard right. E. coli poop. Pretty awesome, huh?
Apparently the E. coli are grown in tanks and, as they defecate, their fecal matter is harvested because it contains aspartic acid-phenylalanine amino acid –the protein needed to make the aspartame. These fecal proteins are then treated with methanol to produce the artificial sweetener.
Did you get that, Gnarly patriots? Something innocuously labeled “artificial sweetener” on the back of that soda (or something else) is actually poop from a deadly bacteria. Oh wait, excuse me, poop that’s been treated with methanol. Awesome. Thanks, Monsanto.
Pop quiz: Who doesn’t use artificial sweeteners in any of their products? That’s right, my little urchins of health and common sense, Gnarly doesn’t.

And all along I thought it was lizard juice

This is why I insist on Cane Sugar.
Or my OWN urine.
End of story.

This is stupid. I want the entire e.coli not just their scrumptious feces. And if I am going to harvest feces it's gonna be human feces.
But in all reality the article is sensationalism. I mean they want you to buy Gnarly drinks. Not sure what the hell Gnarly is but they link to a Natural News website. And genetically modified bacteria poop is nowhere near the same thing as what we usually think of as poop. But most of the natural food freaks (often strange, unbathed people) have gone to great lengths to give "genetically modified" as bad a stigma as possible. If humans changed something about it using science then it MUST be bad. Of course many of these same people smoke and live in houses and drive cars that were invented by science, not nature. So go ahead and live in fear. I choose to instead enjoy my life. Have fun y'all!

Of course, in reality, bacteria don't have "feces", just by-products. It's kinda like saying beer and bread are the product of yeast farts.
Anything fermented is going to be the result of some critters waste.
Still, good scare headline.

+1 I don't drink diet because of the after taste and the fact that it tastes nothing like regular.
Anyway, Joe I think you have missed your calling as a syndicated columnist. Your takes on news stories are always spot on and entertaining.
