As everyone here of course knows, he designed the iconic monster for the Alien movie and it's many sequels and spin-offs. I believe he had a hand in the design of the spaceship and the other sets, as well.

Alien is one of my favourite movies, largely due to its artistic style.

HR's artwork exists in a lot of places.
He invented the "Biomechanical" artform.
He did the cover/gatefold artwork for ELP's 1973 album, "Brain Salad Surgery".

Pretty sad news. Hans Rudolph Giger was quite an influential artist -at least in terms of his effect on popular culture. I was just a kid when Alien was released and remember the big splash Giger made with books like Necronomicon.

Giger did awesome work using an airbrush and mixed media. I remember one of my college instructors, Marshall Arisman, talking about Giger's methods. Sometimes the guy would start out randomly putting down shadow areas and basic shapes and then just make something erotic and disturbing emerge out of that. A lot of Giger's inspiration came at a painful cost; he suffered night terrors and used the experiences from the sleeping disorder as one influence for his artwork.

Giger had something few artists achieve: a signature look or style and one that is timeless. You can look at Giger paintings made back in the 1970's and they still look futuristic today. They don't look dated or "steampunk" at all.

Giger is by far best known for his work in Alien, but he has worked on other movies and did even more work in the music industry. I remember one album cover he designed for Blondie. Anyone who listens to Korn might like to know Giger designed the Nubian Queen microphone stand used by frontman Jonathan Davis.

After Alien came out I wondered about Giger. Knowing of only his work on Alien at the time, I felt I was glad I didn't have the nightmares I thought he might have been having...

He drew a lot of futuristic shafts going into futuristic holes. Dude was a hornball for sure. He also designed a Batmobile for Batman Forever which wasn't used and also the 2008 Honda Civic. His favorite webstite was Geocities and nobody will be talking about him in a week. Just like last week.
