This time last year we had unprecedented non-stop rain and flooding here. This year it's extremely dry, to a point that drought is now a problem.

Now today the air here is filled with smoke, to a point that you can barely see across the street. It's smoke from forest fires in the north that's drifting in. The whole place smells like a campground, and there are warnings out to keep your windows closed and avoid outdoor exercise.

I see that someone has posted a before and after picture taken twelve hours apart in Saskatoon:

That's pretty much what we have here in Melville too (minus the skyscrapers.)

It's so dark this afternoon that my bird thinks it's night.

I've got everything closed up sufficiently that it's not bad in here right now but I wonder what it will turn into tonight when people are coming and going for the show...

There a major bush fire in progress in the mountains about 20 miles from us, which is making the air quality pretty bad, too. We have a cotton, reusable panel air filter in our HVAC system, and I'm having to hose it out every couple of days. It's going from white to black in the space of about 48 hours.

Still, at least it isn't threatening our house, which is something to be grateful for.
