I was not sure if this belongs here or in the Afterlife section. I decided here because this does not really apply to films that have had a prior theatrical release.
Does anyone know why many streaming TV shows are being released in 2.0 aspect ratio, across many different streaming services? As these are made for TV series that will never be shown theatrically, and the majority of the viewers are going to watching them on a 16:9 flat screen TV, I have to ask why the producers would want those black bars at the top/bottom of the picture.
Examples:
- Travelers - Netflix
- Star Trek: Discovery - CBS All Access & Bluray
- The Handmade's Tale - Hulu & Bluray
There are a lot more. It's not like any one of these is ever going to be mistaken for a theatrical release.

It's simply a stylistic choice. It's how the producers want their TV show to look. It is nowhere written that the content's aspect ratio MUST conform to 16:9, if they instead want to compose for a wider or narrower frame.

I think the lack of masking and the otherwise acceptance of letterbox means that one can have whatever black space they want above/below the picture and get away with it. For better or worse. What does it matter to the home viewer how much black space there is?

While I agree with this for TV and home videos of theatrical films, where desire to maintain the original shot composition overrides the general public's dislike of wasted black space, it makes no sense (to me) to shoot something purposely in an aspect ratio that does not match the display devices. The difference between 1.78 (16:9) and 2.0 is so small that this seems to less a matter of stylistic choice and more a matter of film maker arrogance.
Many home viewers do care how much black space there is. How many people out there watch 1.37 films "stretched" out to fill the screen, no matter how bad that looks.

Many uneducated viewers simply consider letterbox bars as 'cinematic'. Maybe the idea is to give these shows a more 'professional' look towards this crowd.

It's exactly that... those "bars" are perceived as being cinematic. On the other hand, those wide bars you get with scope on 16:9 are a nuisance for many people. So, this 2:1 is a trade-off between cinematic looks and being a nuisance.
Stranger Things is also one for the list.
We've shown the first season in our screening room as an experiment. The screen in the screening room is close to 2:1, so we had almost the entire screen exposed. It definitely looks more "cinematic" than 16:9 or "flat", even on a big screen.

There have been a number of theatrcial releases in 2:00 also. I do not like it. TV shows and Flat theatrical movies should be 1:85.

The biggest gripe I have regarding "2.0" cinematic A-list releases is that many locations aren't set-up to play this kind of content.
In the worst case, you'll end up with letterboxed flat on an unmasked, scope-sized screen...

Carl, it makes no sense to make TV shows 1:33 anymore. All TV's today are 1:85. As such, this is the most logical format to make TV shows in.

oh i know (well, 1.78:1 i think it is). but they should have kept the tvs at 1.33:1 as well. i guess the idea was to make them more amenable to showing movies made after 1953. but movies were made for theaters and that is where they should be seen.
historically, it has been hard enough for the "professionals" in theaters to get the aspect ratio of a movie right. now every tv owner can futz it up. not to mention (ok, i'll mention it) the 50 or so years of actual tv programs made (and preserved) before these widescreens came along that now cannot be watched without some sort of compromise--the least of which, black bars on the side, runs a distant third to stretch-vision and zoom-vision.

I'm okay with AR-1.33 programming being boxed on the sides.
That is the ratio that they were created in and that's the ratio they should be shown in. Since it is easy to fit 1.33 content onto a wide screen without cropping, boxing in the sides is the natural thing to do. No problem, IMO.

I guess with the odd exception of a few 2.35:1 screens and a bunch of very old leftover 4:3 screens, all TVs sold in the last 10 or so years were 16:9 screens.
So, besides some odd artistic choices, it would be pretty useless to produce any new series in "4:3".
I personally, want to see classic 1.33 content in exactly that aspect ratio, but I know that people are easily annoyed by black bars on the sides. They are used to horizontal black bars, but those vertical black bars need to go. Often, they keep pushing buttons, until stretch-o-vision removes them..,,

As most of us know, analog SD TV's were 1.33:1 because movies were 1.33:1 at the time the NTSC TV standard was developed. Movies went widescreen in the 1950's to compete with TV by differentiation.
I think it's absolutely ludicrous, 60 years later, to think that TV shows should still be 1.33:1.
Modern TV's are 1.78:1 (not 1.85) because 1.78 was an exact compromise between 1.33 and 2.35. It was based in part on the notion that 1.33 TV shows would be around for a long time and that 1.33 production would continue for television, but the industry converted to HD far quicker than SMPTE anticipated. The Director's Guild wanted the HDTV format to be 2.0:1 and IMO, that would have been better because 2.35 movies would have taken up more of the screen.
While anyone sophisticated in the matter would always want to see original aspect ratio, ignorant consumers HATE black bars ("I paid good money for this TV and I don't want to see a smaller picture!"). They really don't get that they're missing 23% of the image. That's why even HBO frequently shows 2.35/2.4 movies at 1.78. I hate that. I'll pay for a subscription when they show films at the proper aspect ratio. At least TCM almost always plays film at proper AR, although my current cable provider only has the SD version.
I don't know why some filmmakers are bothering with 2.0. Frankly, I don't think I noticed that Stranger Things was at 2.0. I'm going to have to check an episode again. I probably thought it was 1.85.
It used to annoy me when 1.85 movies were opened up to 1.78 on Blu-ray and TV, but restorian Robert A. Harris once wrote that he thought it was fine and if it's okay with him, I guess it has to be okay for me.

The difference is marginal. In a movie theater with proper masking, you would probably lose almost the same amount of picture on the sides.

When 1.85 films are opened up to 1.78 for broadcast or for Blu-ray, you're not losing anything - you're seeing MORE height.
But I do agree and have posted before that theaters never projected to exact standards and between the architecture of the theater and parallax distortion, you are likely to be missing substantial portions of the image in many (most?) theaters. Even screening rooms have this problem.

2 reasons:
1) Widescreen has certain connotations with respect to prestige content (film vs TV), and also just presents natural advantages for shot composition in many cases. 2.0:1 gives you a widescreen look & feel without having *too* dramatic a letterbox.
2) Probably the bigger reason - although HDTV sets have 16:9 displays, 2.0:1 is a *very* common aspect ratio for smartphones and tablets, which is where a lot of this content is consumed nowadays. Since those screens are so small, filling the screen completely in the native aspect ratio is advantageous.

I haven't checked Android devices, but the iPhone XS Max and Xr are 2.16:1. The Xs is 2.17:1. The iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8 and 8 Plus are 1.78:1.
All of the current Apple iPads except for the iPadPro 11" are 1.33:1. The iPadPro 11" is 1.43:1. (That all assumes square pixels).

Thanks for correcting me on the tablets, I clearly had that information wrong. Several of the popular Android phones are 18:9, and the aforementioned top of the line iPhones are close enough to 2.0:1 for the logic to hold.

I work in the video editing lab in the college's Film Department and on night a student working on his nearly completed film project...rendering it for a screening, came to me to ask how he could get his "film" to have those black bars on the top and bottom. I asked why he would want to crop the image that he composed both in his head and in the camera viewfinder, in 16:9 to be screened instead in something other than 16:9? He seemed confused. I said, "You will be cutting off part of the picture that you originally wanted to be there; what's the reason you want black bars?" He thought for a good 2 or 3 minutes and then simply said it was because that's the way movies "look." So really it's an aesthetic thing.
Carsten and Marcel are right, it's the perception of seems this entire video generation. This is how they see films on their flat panels; 1.85 and 2.39 bars mean they are watching a movie. "Normal" tv is always full 16:9. I said he should talk to his professor about that; the professor might have a thing or two to say about cropping an image to make it look more cinematic after it was composed differently. Actually the Prof should have told the class about making a decision to shoot in one AR over another before they shoot the project. I told him I'd be interested in what the Prof has to say on the matter. I then pointed out that while he may think that letterboxing looks more like "movies," in a movie theatre, you never see those black bars...then I thought, well, at least not while it was FILM being projected.
I think since video, aspect ratios have no real absolutes. If you are doing constant width (which is what TV is), those black masks can be where ever the director wants them and it doesn't mean a hill of beans to the younger viewer. At least it's better than geometrically distorting the image to force-fit it. But you see people PURPOSELY stretching images to fill their full flat screen and thinking that's fine too, so multiple ARs may be now forever part of the display landscape. Best we either let it not bother us or take up drinking.

I remember that people used to say that digital media would bring about "democratization" of the film and television industries. That turned out to be true to a great extent. It has made it easier for people who aren't well connected to network or studio insiders to make movies or shows and have them seen by a greater audience.
However, it has also allowed more people who don't know what they are doing to get their inferior product to market and I think that it has had a negative effect on the industry as a whole.
Now, virtually any idiot with a video cam can be a movie director and he doesn't even need to know the first thing about making movies.
There are a lot of things, such as the establishment of aspect ratios, that were decided upon for very sound technical, aesthetic or historical reasons but, now, any idiot can come in and trample over established standards just because he thinks it looks cool.
These wankers unknowingly make a lot of trouble for themselves and others just because they are too lazy or stupid (or both) to study the craft and adhere to standards set by those who came before.
There is a legend which says that the width of movie film was decided on because 35 millimeters was closest to an even multiple of the width of the windows in George Eastman's house.
I don't know if I really believe it or not but it is plausible and it does make a good story.
Anyway, legend has it that Eastman took a window pane and progressively cut it in half until he came upon a width that he thought would be convenient. Those strips of glass were used as the models which set the standard for the 35mm film we use, today.
As the story unfolds, Thomas Edison (who probably stole the idea from LePrince) used Eastman's patterns to decide upon the original 1:1.33 aspect ratio that early films were shot in. Further on down the line, aspect ratios were "improved" for specific reasons. It could be said that the 1:1.66 ratio was chosen because it is the closest practical size to the Golden Ratio. Other ratios were chosen in order to "improve" the viewing experience and make it more difficult to show filmed movies on television. Other wide-screen ratios were chosen for specific reason on their own rights.
Whether you believe the Eastman story or the Edison story, or whether the truth is different, my point is that there are good reasons why things are done a certain way.
But, when you tell people that the things they are trying to do are in violation of standards and you try to explain why those standards exist, those idiots roll their eyes at you.
This is why we have so many problems like wonky aspect ratios or out of control sound levels.
People are stupid, they are lazy and they don't want to take the time to learn their craft.

At today's ISDCF meeting, I learned that a 2.0 aspect ratio is Univisum ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Univisium ). "Green Book" was in Univisum. Someone at the meeting said that must be why Roma lost out as best picture.

I thought the 16:9 was simply three rows of four 4:3 boxes. I think there was some technical reason reason why that was an easy thing to do. An exact compromise between 1.33 and 2.35 would be 1.84.

'Compromise' is not the best term here. 16:9/1.77:1 is the geometric mean between 2.35:1 and 1.33:1. Geometric mean is more suitable to aspect ratios than arithmetic mean, as aspect ratio is about area relations.

I thought 16:9 came about as a compromise in the SD days of making "widescreen" DVDs workable on-the-fly. You know, with a 16x9 monitor using the 480 lines with a 1.2:1 pixel aspect ratio instead of the "normal" DVD one of 0.9. But if you had a 4x3 monitor, you'd have the DVD letterbox the playback of widescreen DVDs, essentially mushing it down to 360 lines and the remainder at the top and bottom output as black.
Thus, 16x9 is a byproduct of compatibility between 360 or 480 lines in SD playback. Yes?

16:9 existed long before DVD was invented. Actually it was the native aspect ratio of the first HD systems.

There a couple of British TV shows recendly shot is 2.39.
Dr Foster (a crime drama), Fleabag (Phoebe Waller-Bridge's sit-com)
Both on the BBC.
I saw an artical on the bbc forums where people were complaing about the letterboxing on Dr Foster.
