FP18 Heat Glass and that tiny glass for the aperture plate

    Hello,
Long shot but just got a Kinoton FP18 and maybe an hour after install the heat glass shattered then cooked that tiny glass in the aperture. Anyone out there ever have new heat glass and the aperture glass cut to size. If so, who did you use?

    Thanks for the time,
    Tim

If you get it repaired, have you changed anything to avoid it just happening again? Assuming you were running the shutters and film, this seems like a lamp focus/alignment issue perhaps?

I just got a report of a heat filter issue and wanted to confirm my memory. Coating faces the lamp?

At least mine is just a typical lamphouse mounted one, not as unique and specific as Tim's. I remember a show on an FP16 one time were somehow someone got a big fingerprint on the one Tim's talking about. Very strange effect on the screen. It was out of focus but still visible. I guess in theory we should have been able to lockdown the booth and figure out who done it.

In most applications yes, the coating faces the heat source. Otherwise the glass gets too hot first and shifts/shatters due to it's own thermal tolerances.

Coating always faces the light source. If you install it reversed, there is a good chance that filter will either crack or shatter That's because all the IR and UV will travel straight back through the glass heating it up in just a second or two. Ditto for lamp house heat filters.

I was pretty sure that was correct but its its not like most of us encounter them as often as we used to.
