Here are some photos I took yesterday Sunday at the new remolded Castro Theatre in San Francisco CA for a sold out DCP showing of 'The Sound Of Music 'Singalong.
Some things I liked but the new roll down high position screen I did not like.
Seems the classic Castro won't be used for movies much anymore just high price stage music shows and drinks with no seats on the main floor. They will put in portable chairs for movies. The large loge /balcony area still keeps It's older seats.
Big delay for the matinee on Sunday as they were to open at 12 noon for a movie 1 PM show but they did not open till 12 35PM. The huge long line went 3 blocks to get in on a hot SF afternoon in March. Seems they had a live show with no seats downstairs Sat eve. They ran a delay in getting the chairs back in for the Sunday 1PM performance. Hope next time they plan ahead with more help. Many of the old people waiting in the hot sun long line almost passed out.
The movie was a new DCP of the Sing A Long SOM. The new roll down scope screen is not as wide as the former fixed CinemaScope screen was. If you sit up front your neck is going to hurt looking high up. At least if your seats are in the mid or back area you won't have anyone blocking your view of the new small screen. It may go up higher when they show a old 1.33 film print?
The new electric/pipe organ was played before the movie at 1 PM. David the house organist played it very light and soft, was not very loud?
I noticed on the side walls they have new small surround speakers. I heard no surround sound from this stereo movie . The stage speakers had very minimum separation as the LRC stage speakers are placed to close together. This surround sound system may just be set up for live music events and not for Dolby movies or maybe they did not have them set up for a 5.1 or 7.1 movie? They may be tied in to the organ also.
A big disappoint for me they did not open or close the new main stage drape curtains like they always did , It was not till after I complained to 6 different manager types in the lobby they did close them after the credits with no color stage light on the fabric. They just sat there in the dark. They spent all this money on the remodel and no stage foot lamps are in place on the stage for some color light on the curtains.
Same with the deco huge light fixture in the ceiling. I have been told and have seen new photos this giant deco lamp can show 16 different colors. Sunday they just had boring white lights on when you came in and kept dark during the movie. No showmanship with the new people that have taken over the Castro Theatre lease. At least please try to keep a dim blue/purple light on or some other color during a show. During the intermission they shined a blue light on the restored ceiling , The upstairs loge lights are red along with the under the balcony lights also are red. .I think they can change the color on these deco lamps.
Hope they can fix some of these things in the future as we are lucky the Castro Theatre is still standing. Could have been sold and turned into a gym, disco, mall stores or torn down for much needed parking.
Stop by and check out the place and give management some suggestions to bring It back Thanks Terry
