The Odyssey Flat and Scope Screens

Not sure if IMDB is always reliable when it comes to listing their tech specs, but to my surprise I see that The Odyssey will be formatted for Common Height and Common Width screens. Here is how it's listed on IMDB...

    1.85 : 1(theatrical ratio, constant width venues)
    2.39 : 1(theatrical ratio, constant height venues)

Has a film's aspect ratio ever been adjusted based on the type of screen? And judging by one of the threads on this site, it looks like The Mandalorian will be doing the same, or did I read that wrong? I love that they are taking the different screens into account, but I'm not sure I have faith in theaters properly following instructions when the DCP is delivered. And what about if a Common Height or Common Width screen is showing the film in 5/70. How is that going to work?

The last iteration of the Avatar series also had both scope- and flat-framed releases. While not common, it happens. Historically, there also have been quite a few open matte released, although that concept isn't really something that made it into the digital cinema world anymore.

EXACTLY! I have seen this once or twice before. I stopped by one venue last
year to pick up something I had let then borrow. I don't remember the movie,
but it was one of those that had "common height" and "common width" DCP
options, and they still got it WRONG!

It's not WRONG, you're just way too old-school!

It's the modern cinematic experience! People want MORE black bars! They're used to see black bars at home while watching NETFLIX or a TikTok movie on TV, so they demand it at the cinema too!

They should just deliver the Odyssey in 2.39:1 to standard theaters. Or S220 and at most F220. We use the GDC TMS template system that auto builds playlists with scope or flat macros based on the file name having S or F in it. It doesn't really care what shape your screen is, just what preset it knows to punch in.

To setup Mando and Grogu at one of my locations, which has no masking whatsoever, I had to do a couple extra steps to get flat onto the flat screens through templates and scope on the others. It wasn't a huge pain, but I wasn't crazy excited either.

The trailer looks good in scope. They oughta just keep it in scope.

Why complicate things. I tell ya.
