Well I have to say all I have seen and worked with are CIR and love them, never had a single problem. Used them at all the places I worked, got one at home and now a 16mm CIR to add to the collection.

Just to set things straight.... I love the Nuemade splicer.... I was only answering the question about the CIR. [Smile]

However, I do keep the CIR in good condition, and havn't had any issues with it at all. I just like the big, manly handle on the Numade better. [Smile]

Considering the exorbitant price of all of these things, they are all pretty much junk, cobbled up pieces parts assembled to a cast base of mystery metal.

Considering the price....

Think about how many splicers are sold...worldwide...Do you think that number gets out of the hundreds? Now cut up that pie into the various manufacturers which there are predominately two but there are even cheapo knockoffs on those too.

For the most part, there isn't too much precision in them until you get to the punch and die. Most splicer manufacturers have to maintain a line of the punch/dies to handle the various perforation types and even film guages.

Now lets look at the life of the things...if reasonably taken care of, they will last...well just about forever. A little cleaning here and there, don't drop it or allow it to be flung and you got yourself a pretty decent value there. For a 35mm tape splicer you might spend as much as $600, depending on flavor (and most will be paying a bit less) but take that $600 figure...if your theatre makes it 10-years your splicer cost is down to $60/year for something that is essential to the operation of a film based cinema. Pretty reasonable if you ask me.

If they are that easy to make and there is a pile of money to be made off of them, there would be more people out there making them. The realities are, it is a tiny, tiny market.

well ..... after spending the first half of my career making splices with my thumbs, scissors, razor blade and film cement , I think any tape splicer is a godsend . Have used a few , basically they all seem to do the job ok.
